This place is a great find. Most lodges in the Rain Forest Penninsula are very expensive. Granted that most are pretty remote (which runs up costs for everything), but I don't like that they mostly go for the "high end" market. Who cares if the toilet paper has a flower sticking out of the roll or whether you get a fruity drink in a fancy glass upon arrival. Rio Nuevo Lodge is small and family run. and they took care of everything we needed. Your ride out to the lodge from Puerto Jimenez is included in the stay, which already gives a cost savings. This Lodge is an affordable option on the Osa($50/day for 3 meals a day). You can also book a 2 meal per day option, which is good if you want to bring your own hiking snacks from Puerto Jimenez. The tents are basic, but very clean - you have a mattress on the floor with sheets and pillow. The showers and bathrooms are clean - all you need. The food is good and the service is personal and friendly. If you have special needs, let them know and they will accommodate you. I told them my nephew liked pasta, and the cook served a pasta dish with every dinner - he was in heaven. One friend didn't eat meat, and they had fish for us. The little river at the base of the hill is great for a cooling swim, and there were LOTS of birds and monkeys that you could see from camp. We saw sloths, toucans and other birds on our hike. My husband particularly loved the night time hike looking for poisonous snakes - I stayed in the restaurant, thank you.
