“Tranquility in a Tropical Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

We had the pleasure of staying at Sol y Luna for four nights during the first week of December 2013. I cannot agree more with all of the glowing reviews. Simon and Patricia were absolutely wonderful hosts. They went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and comfortable, and to ensure that we had all of the information necessary to enjoy our time in Montezuma.

In addition to their gracious hospitality, the property is simply amazing - nothing short of a tropical paradise (this was one of the primary reasons we initially selected Sol y Luna, based on photos). The beautiful tropical gardens that occupy the property were designed, and are meticulously maintained, by Patricia and Simon. As a plant enthusiast/gardener myself, I can attest to the significant dedication (and creative flair) that such gardens require. These qualities are also evident in the bungalows. We stayed in the Sol bungalow and loved everything about it. The decor is tasteful and in perfect harmony with the tranquil setting. Natural materials (beautiful woods, driftwood, shells, etc.) and soft lighting give the bungalow a warm and welcoming energy. The bed (memory foam maybe?) was very comfortable and the shower was great (hard to come by we found in CR).

Lastly, if you are interested in wildlife, Sol y Luna will not disappoint. In our short time there, we saw coatimundis, monkeys, an agouti, racoons (including the cutest babies ever), an enormous iguana and several other large lizards, and a number of really cool insects. We loved hearing the otherworldly howls of the howler monkeys in the early mornings.

I cannot recommend Sol y Luna enough. We wouldn't think of staying anywhere else if we visit Montezuma again.

Thank you Simon and Patricia for sharing your home with us (and apologies for such a long overdo review)! We had a wonderful time :)

It was so wonderful to be back here and to be greeted so kindly by our amazing hosts Patricia and Simon. We stayed here 2 years ago as part of our "round the world" adventure. It was quite simply one of our special memories of the extended trip and we were both so very happy we came back. The lovely accommodation offers all you need for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. My favourite thing to do was to walk from the jungle location to the beach past the monkeys and iguanas and watch the Pelican fish at the beach (5 min walk). This is not a place for party people it is a haven to watch nature and wonder at the world around you. Our hosts are lovely people and their vision for their beautiful gardens continue to grow. The one thing that was different is now they have internet access that you can use from the cabins and our I-pad worked very well.

We also got an opportunity to see the house they now have for rent on the adjacent property - all we can share is that it is stunning and such good value and we are planning to come back to this special place in 2 years again and hope that it will be available for rent.

If you are looking for a truly wonderful place to rest and take note of the beautiful wildlife and nature SolyLuna is for you. Thanks again P and S and we will see you soon! Happy 2014:)

As so many other reviews have said, Sol y Luna was the perfect spot for our Costa Rican vacation. We were going to Montezuma in mid-November and wanted some place authentic and more isolated than a hotel. After reviewing all the amazing reviews on Sol y Luna, I email Patricia and Simon for more information. Even before we got to Costa Rica, they were incredibly helpful. We had tight travel arrangements and they helped us plan our trek from San Jose airport. Once we arrived, Simon greeted us and showed us to our lovely Luna bungalow. The bungalow is small, but perfect for a couple. We had a large bed and day bed, plenty of closet space, along with a kitchen equipped with small gas stove and a large fridge. Everything you could need was there (wine opener, espresso maker, you name it)! Additionally, the bathroom is huge, with an amazing shower with hot water that we enjoyed after long days of exploring nearby. The garden is beautiful and designed specifically for the wildlife in the area. We had a beautiful bush next to the porch that attracted humming birds and butterflies every morning. We also had visitors from other critters, including howlers and white faced monkeys.

Simon and Patricia provided us with a detailed map of the area, including recommendations on where to eat and what to see; they even set up some time for us to fish with the local fisherman. They would stop by in the morning to see if we needed anything, and even did our laundry for us! It was like staying with family.

The location of the bungalows is great. Like others have said, it is about 2 miles from either Montezuma or Cabuya. My boyfriend and I enjoyed the walk and exercise in the morning. You would run into the wildlife, or walk along the beaches and before you knew it, you were in town! Some may want to rent an ATV to get back and forth if you have any hesitations because of the distance, but it really isn't necessary. There was plenty to do in the area, we stayed for 9 nights and spent our days doing activities like zip lining, hiking or surfing, followed by relaxing on the beach or in the bungalow. It was the perfect vacation.

Thank you again, Patricia and Simon for your hospitality and your beautiful bungalows. We hope to see you again soon! Pura Vida!

We recently stayed at an adjacent building that is not generally for rent. However, the experience is the same as others. Patricia and Simon were very welcoming and helpful in getting us situated. The property is lovely and the area is away from any touristy area, but close enough to Montezuma to make frequent trips. There is a cattle farm across the road and a beach just down the road. The beach is not very swimmable as it is very rocky, but the owners can show you where to swim. We loved the monkeys around and the general peaceful feeling.

Words are not adequate to describe this property from the incredible bungalows to the exceptional hosts.
Patricia and Simon, you two are truly wonderful people.
The property is natural and beautifully maintained. The wildlife at your doorstep, howlers every day. What a beautiful sound to remind you where you are. Right in the jungle. How lucky you are to have discovered this beautiful spot.
Coming back next year. I miss the sounds, the perfect porch....everything.
A gorgeous beach right down the road.
Patricia and Simon will give you all the details of the great spots in the area.
Fresh fish....cook it in your bungalow ....glass of wine for dinner as you get the privilege of listening to the sounds at SolyLuna.

Aaaaaaaaa.

My partner and I recently stayed at Sol y Luna for a week while in Costa Rica. We fell madly in love with this place so quickly. Our first morning in the Luna bungalow we woke to the sound of the howler monkey's and tropical birds. A five minute walk down the road we arrived at Los Cedros beach and had a morning swim almost entirely alone, with just a few dog walkers strolling the beach. The bungalows are simple and beautifully designed. Simon and Patricia have such an eye for details. We spent most of our time hanging out in the hammock on the front porch, taking in the lush and green gardens that surrounded the property. The massive bamboo patch just outside our front door was magnificent. Patricia spent some time with us the first day we were there to introduce us to the area. She obviously loves Costa Rica and wants to share her knowledge and connection. She guided us to some to some of the local treasures that made our trip quite special. If you're planning to stay in the area and you're looking for a quiet refuge away from the "busy" town centre, Sol y Luna is the perfect place. We really appreciated having our bungalow hidden in the jungle to come home to after a day in the hot Costa Rican sun. We also really loved our daily visits from the wildlife, including the howler monkey's, the agouti and our friend Lola, Patricia and Simon's beautiful cat! Thanks again!

We recently stayed at Sol y Luna for a week and it was lovely. The cottages are charming, clean and comfortable, and set in a beautiful private garden. From your front porch all you see is tropical greenery and wildlife coming and going. One morning as we were having breakfast we saw a troupe of at least 3 dozen howler monkeys crossing through the trees right in front of us!
The beach is a 5 min walk down the lane and it's beautiful - you can only swim at high tide because of the rocks, but that is what most of the beaches in that area are like.
We took the bus back and forth to Montezuma and Cabuya - it runs every 2 hours and cost $1.
We also took taxis occasionally to come back at night if we went out to dinner (last bus leaves Montezuma at 4:15) You really don't need a car.
As many others have said, Patricia and Simon are great hosts - they give you all the information you need as soon as you get there and will willingly make restaurant and taxi reservations for you - they even did personal laundry for us!
We tried 2 of the local restaurants they recommended and both were excellent - a little place in Cabuya with fabulous food and Los Artistes in Montezuma, where we had a wonderful, romantic dinner right on the beach, lit by candlelight. Loved it!
Sol y Luna is a quiet, peaceful retreat to come back to after a day exploring, and I wish we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: We stayed in Luna, but I think Sol would have been equally nice.
