“A welcome place to relax and play”

The road into the town of Montezuma is steep! If you are on foot while staying in Montezuma be sure you stay at a place right in town. We were going to stay in a place "on the hill" but when we realized how steep the walk would be we were so happy to find La Aurora. It is located in town and is clean and cute and has other nice travelers staying there.

We had a great room that was super clean. I was so shocked at how clean the place was being so close to the beach. The town beach is like a three minute walk away. The hotel has FANTASTIC common areas with great seating with options like sofas, tables and chairs, as well as a great collection of hammocks. The common kitchen was great and had all the tools needed to make your own meals. The bedrooms have a mini fridge. The showeres are cold but that is what you need in the heat. The rooms had good fans for the hight heat. I loved this hotel and found it hard to leave.
We were there at low season and so the price was great. You would never be able to stay at a place like this in the USA or Europe for the price we paid.

Room Tip: Down stairs can get a bit noisy with people cooking in the kitchen and walking past your room if you...

We hadn't booked anything when arriving in Montezuma and looked at a few grotty but expensive hostels before we found this hotel. It was one of the best places we stayed at during our 3-week trip. The (a little disinterested but friendly) receptionist charged us a bit more than usual (happened to see the price of the same room on her list for the previous night), but the room was really great value - spacious enough for three, private bathroom, fridge, air conditioning, balcony with beautiful plants all around, hammocks, and only a stone's throw from the village. No breakfast or Internet, but that was fine.

Room Tip: the rooms on the upper floor have balconies and hammocks.

My partner and I stayed at La Aurora in the off season, 2012 for $25.00 total per night. The hotel is lots of fun, with many communal spaces spread throughout the 3 story building. The rooms are clean, and for the same price as a normal room, we got to choose the one with the river-rock bathroom. There is also a communal kitchen, A/C or fan depending on how much you want to pay (A/C is $35.00 per night), and fridge. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. It was also very conveniently located close to downtown, but not so close that you couldn't sleep from noise. All around a great, safe, clean place to stay. I would stay there again if we came back.

La Aurora is downtown Montezuma and possible the first reasonable place you´ll find here once you´re dropped off at the busstop. And I must say, for 40 dollars a night (the cheapest room in 2012) you get a good matress, lots of hammocks and a hot shower. But that´s it. The ac didn´t work, the doublebed had a less soft matress, but I used the single bed anyway. The announced Wifi is only available within 5 meters of the receptiondesk, so forget internet in your room. The place is clean nevertheless, but either you try to find something cheaper (Llena, Lucy or Luz en el Cielo (zee other review) if you´re travelling on a budget, or spend 15 dollars more at the neighbours, who have spacious clean rooms and Wifi all over the place.

Room Tip: nr 3 was a good pick, though you´ll hear the sound of the watertank from about 5.30 am till midnight

The La Aurora Hotel is the best hotel I have stayed at in Costa Rica. For $40, I got a room with two Queen size beds, two bathrooms - one with just a toilet and the other with a hot water shower and sink. The room was in good condition and clean - I even have a small refridgerator and a night light above the bed. Each day the linens were changed and towels were readily available at the front desk.

The hotel itself is not on the main drag so it is quiet at night. Montezuma is a very small place and everything is walking distance from th hotel. The hotel is equipt with a hose to wash the sand off your feet and the communal area has plenty of seats with tables and benches. There is a kitchen area as well if you want to cook your own food. Although there are no PCs, WiFi is freely available. The room I had did have an AC, but I opted not to use it. Instead, I used the fan and saved myself $10 per night. It may not make a difference to some, but the hotel is pleasant to look at and well kept.

At the reception, you will find a helpful staff. There are useful maps on the wall and one may book tours and connections to other places without having to go directly to the tour operators. The staff didn´t speak English well and I don´t speak Spanish well either. Yet we communicated well enough and the staff was so sincerely friendly that I wouldn´t make language a deal breaker personally.

Room Tip: The room was cool enough without an AC.

While the rooms are a bit sparse and the TV was totally not necessary (as it didn't really receive and channels), they were roomy, well chilled by the AC, clean, and had a refrigerator. The common areas are excellent with tons of hammocks, and the communal kitchen was a good way to save some money on food costs as well as meet some fellow travelers. We stayed in the third floor apartments, which were probably a bit more than two people needed. The main room features two queen size beds, nightstands, a clothes rack and a couch. In the next (door separated, private) room is another bed, nightstand, and clothes rack. This would be perfect for a family, group of friends, or couple of couples traveling together (or, if your like us, two people really looking to stretch out for a night or two after spending spending weeks in hostels and cramped budget rooms).

Room Tip: Not on the beach, but very close. Nothing in Montezuma is more than 5 minutes from the beach.

I ended up in Montezuma on a whim and, having not done any research on where to stay, ended up getting a room at La Aurora. I stayed on the ground floor, park side. It was by far the worst place I stayed while in Costa Rica. It reeked of disinfectant, there were ants crawling around everywhere, the mattress had to have been as old as the hotel, the linens and towels were damp & musty, and the shower was ice cold. I had the worst night's sleep ever and could not wait to check out the next morning.

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT stay here.
