“Destination Wedding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2012

My wife and I retired this last fall and wanted to spend 3 months in Costa Rica during our winter. We choose the Nicoya Peninsula for our extended stay, in particular Montezuma. After making plans, our youngest daughter got engaged. When asked where and when the wedding would be, she asked if her wedding could be in Costa Rica while we were there. We looked around the area and found the only place that could do the wedding, from soup to nuts, was Ylang Ylang. What a wonderful experience and an incredibly professional staff from management to wait staff. It couldn't have been lovelier and our family and friends will be talking about it for years to come.

The week we spent at Ylang Ylang was most memorable and we recommend it with enthusiasm. The guest rooms are set in the forest just up the beach from the ocean and you wake to the sound of tropical birds. Monkeys, lizards and birds abound. The dining room is outdoors and adds a gentle breeze and a view of the beach to wonderful meals. Our family has vegans and non-vegans and everyone was pleased with the variety and quality of the meals. The service in the dining room was gracious and friendly as is the service at the front desk. Relax the day away at the beach or book excursions (nature hikes, canopy tours, surfing, etc.) at the front desk and explore the Nicoya peninsula. There are many nature paths you can explore on your own as well. We want to go back and stay at Ylang Ylang again!

Spent a wonderfully relaxing afternoon/night/morning here: the spa services were superior, and having them administered in a tent on the mountainside certainly adds a level of relaxation. The Garden Bungalow was spacious, well-appointed (small fridge for beverages, snacks), with a lovely big deck, all quite private. I had the pool pretty much to myself, and enjoyed both breakfast and dinner. All the staff very helpful.

Room Tip: The Garden Bungalows feel very secluded although just steps from the main path, pool, etc. Breezy an...

My husband and I had a wonderful, relaxing 6 days at the Ylang Ylang Beach Resort.
The people working there and the guests were all lovely, and incredibly personable.
One of my favorite moments of the day was the first sip of passionfruit juice in the morning.
Every moment in our room was divine, since we could hear the waves even when the windows were closed. The massages were great, the location was great, the monkeys were great, the food was excellent. Dreamy. I recommend it most highly.

We stayed here for five nights/four days as part of our honeymoon. We enjoyed it, but might not have been prepared for how rustic it is. The common areas--pool, restaurant, paths--were wonderful in every way. We spent plenty of time dipping in the pool and reading in the nearby shade. Monkeys swung above us all the while and the constant sound of the ocean was lovely. The service at the restaurant was wonderful and I do not think you could possibly have a better view from the tables. And the ocean was at our doorstep.

The food ranged. Anything tuna or fruit was amazing. The sushi was near inedible. The rest fell in between. But we generally enjoyed each meal, in particular because of the wonderful staff.

The only complaint we had was that the room was a bit spartan. Though the deck on our Garden Bungalow was a great place to relax during the day, at night it was poorly lit and there was nothing in the room but a bed and a bathroom. Coupled with a lack of any other common area, once dinner was over, it was hard to stay occupied.

Given the chance, though, I would love the opportunity to visit again.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Ylang Ylang on our Honeymoon and we fell completely in love with the place! We got the honeymoon package which included a moonlight dinner on the beach which was amazing. The food here is so good an breakfast and dinner was included in our package. The staff was so nice and always helpful, our room was impeccably clean at all times there was nothing not to like!
If I could move into the Ylang Ylang I would in a heartbeat!!
Don't miss out on this amazing treat in quiet Montezuma paradise!

We’ve had Ylang Ylang on our travel radar for a long time. We were not disappointed after our five night stay in February. Ylang Ylang is so relaxing. The grounds are lush and beautiful, the pool area is pretty, and the beach is wild and natural. We loved the location – close enough to town to pick up snacks and beer and wine, but far enough away to feel secluded.

Breakfasts and dinners were not only excellent, but the restaurant setting is wonderful – a view of the sunrise on the beach in the morning, and moonlight on the water in the evening. We tried a different breakfast each day. I mostly ate the flavorful chicken dishes for dinner, and my husband ate the zesty tuna steaks and shrimp. The Namaste rolls made a great appetizer.

Our dome was very comfortable – good bed and nice A/C at night, and we loved having a mini-fridge and coffee maker in our room. The bathrooms were nice with strong water pressure and bright lighting. There were also good lights for reading in bed at night. We stayed in a garden dome, but could still hear the crashing surf at night. Each morning, we awoke to the howler monkeys, and each late afternoon, we had monkeys swing through the area to put on a show.

The staff is attentive and friendly. We noticed that the restaurant seemed understaffed on Friday night, so we had a long wait for dinner that evening. We sat down for dinner a bit earlier on Saturday night and had less of a wait time. Since the restaurant is open to people not staying on the property, those nights can probably be busy.

We didn’t take advantage of the spa or the yoga – we were too busy doing area activities. We hiked to the Montezuma waterfalls, took a Tortuga Island trip, hiked the Cabo Blanco Reserve to the beach, and rented ATV’s and traveled to Santa Theresa for the day, and also walked to Playa Grande a couple of times. The town of Montezuma is fun and funky, and perfect for people watching. We didn’t swim at Playa Grande because we were there during red tide, but I think it would have been fine for swimming and playing in the waves.

Ylang Ylang is the perfect combination of authenticity and luxury. If you like small, lovely hotels on a natural beach, it is for you. If you like mega resorts with loungers and beach volleyball on a manicured white sand beach, Ylang Ylang is not for you. We loved it and cannot wait to go back someday.
