“Nice hotel but beware as security poor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2011

Good points are (1) location is very handy to shops and beach, (2) botanical garden type setting with tropical birds, monkeys and iguanas, (3) good size room with sufficient hot water (4) the lady who runs the hotel is a super person speaking good English (5) food service is good.
Bad point is there is poor security at this hotel. The rustic style rooms must have been designed by an idealist. There was no safe in my room yet I saw them in another hotel in town that cost about 40% less. Front doors have decent locks but the back of my accommodation block was screened by jungle and, especially at night, a burglars dream as each room has a large screen/wood only window with removable man-size section. Some filthy criminal kicked in this section while I was out and helped himself to most of my possessions. The Policia shook their heads in disbelief.
My advice would be to stay here by all means but treat the rooms as if they were unlocked. Always have a travel companion in the room or take all valuables including electronics along when going out. (The hotel does offer to keep stuff in the office too.)

We had walked around on the grounds of this hotel in 2009, thinking this would be a great place to stay. As luck would have it, we found ourselves once again in Montezuma in 2011, so we decided to see if we could get a room or casita at Luz de Mono. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that a casita was available. The walk to our casita was uphill, up some steep steps, and it was quite a distance. We thought that would be great, away from everything and high enough up the hill to see out to the ocean. You can hear the waves crashing on the beach from the casita. The casita itself was very nice. All of the rooms have open air screens at the top of the walls. Even so, it was very hot in the casita, since it was the dry season. There is no air conditioning but there are ceiling fans in the bedrooms. The bedrooms were spacious and well equipped and the bathroom and shower were great. The casita had a little kitchenette, there was a small living area and a nice front porch with table, chairs and hammock. The draw of this place were all the trees so that it was like being in a jungle - the grounds were just lovely. From our porch, we watched several groups of Capuchin monkeys pass through and we saw many birds. Breakfast in the morning is included - you could pick what you wanted from a menu and everything we ordered tasted very good. We liked the fact that the there was a small parking lot there for our rental car, which was closed with a gate at night. The staff at Luz de Mono was very nice and very helpful. We were not able to use our laptops there (couldn't connect to their internet), so they let us use one of their laptops, which we thought was very nice of them.
BUT, as lovely as all of this was, not being able to sleep at night just takes away the pleasantness. There are at least two casitas that are RIGHT BY THE ROAD, and ours was one of them. We had no idea when we took the casita that the road into Montezuma runs right by the property. And since we were there on a Saturday night, the entire night was an almost continuous parade of very loud motorcycles, ATVs, trucks, buses and cars passing right by us. With part of our walls just being screens, the noises were even louder and frequently the smell of exhaust would come in. Sometimes the vehicle noises were so loud we thought they were coming into our room!!!
Would we stay here again? Yes, but we would definitely ask for a casita or room that is MUCH farther away from the road. If all that was available was something close to the road, we would NOT stay here again.

This is a nice hotel, in a big garden with a swimming-pool, hamacs, and sea view, big rooms, pretty bathrooms. But the best is the casitas on the hill, with two rooms, terrace and outdoor jacuzzi.

This hotel is a little paradise on earth...We arrived there without reservations and Laura, the manager, worked really hard to accomodate us.We stayed for a week and everything was perfect!
-The pool and kid's pool were great, very clean.
-You have about 5 choices for breakfast.
-The garden surrounding the hotel is amazing and very well groomed.
-All the staff is very nice and the place is very kid friendly.
We stayed in a casita (# 2)for the first night: clean,a great oceanview, hammock and outdoor jacuzzi on the terrace!!We had to move in a room for the following nights since it was already booked. The room was nice :we were on the second floor :we coul see all the monkeys in the trees!
The hotel is 2 minutes away from the beach.
THE PLACE TO STAY!!!WE LOVED IT

I was a first-time solo traveler (a spiritual journey, if you will) and through my research and a little fate, I ended up at Luz de Mono in Montezuma. The property is beautiful and the people running it, especially Lora and Rocio, were friendly and helpful despite my obvious nervousness being alone in a foreign country for the first time. Now I should tell you that I'm not a "disney," "cruise," or "all-inclusive" type of traveler and if you are this part of Costa Rica may not be for you. It is more for the down to earth, adventurous traveler. With that in mind, I will say that the rooms at Luz de Mono were wonderfully accommodating -- clean but spare. No tv, a.c. or cute little soaps and shampoos - just the way I like it. The grounds of the property are magnificent - only steps from the beach (you can hear the ocean crashing) but built within the jungle. I had breakfast every morning in a peaceful open air pavillion surrounded by monkeys, birds and iguanas. Heaven. The hotel is just at the edge of the small but fun town of Montezuma so I could walk everywhere. Make sure you hike to the Montezuma water fall. Luz de Mono just reopened their restaurant and bar which is convenient and definitely worth experiencing. Two other restaurants I recommend are Cocolores and La Naranja. For a pricier but amazing ambience experience, try Playa de Artiste. I really didn't have a bad meal the whole vacation.

After quickly checking out most of the accomodations in Montezuma - we decided to stay at Hotel Luz de Mono...It was a no brainer...Unfortunately the Lonley Planet guide doesn't do this place justice...It was one of the better "overall" places we stayed at in Costa Rica...

Our group decided this place provided the best bang for the buck...With cheap accomodations ($50 for a room which included an awesome breakfast), the pristine pool area and the awesome jungle set up, this family run operation provided the comfort we needed...The grounds are quite large, set just up from the beach (1 minute walk), located in the jungle, and a 2 minute walk to the centre of town...It was great to see the abundance of Howler monkeys just hanginng out in the trees while we enjoyed our breakfast...

When I go back to Montezuma, I would not hesitate to stay at this place again...

Luz de Mono in montezuma on the Nicoya Peninsula exemplifies its relaxed spirit. Its location in lush and colourful surroundings with the pounding sound of the surf, and the wildlife, contribute to this magical setting.
The rooms are clean and the breakfasts superb and unrushed.
Above all, the friendliness and unfussy but kindly attitude of the owners and the staff a wonderfully memorable experience.
