“good value- beautiful views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2011

I know a lot of people find things to complain about. This quite earthy hotel served its purpose for us, a young couple traveling around CR and looking for good value and nice hotel views. This hotel is right on the water, hammocks for relaxing, nice ambiance. Unfortunately, as many others have mentioned breakfast isn't included (i think we got spoiled from all our other hotels with continental breakfasts)- we sat at the restaurant and ordered- and it was deliciou. We were pleasantly greeted with colorful birds from the neighborhood flying through... nice for a short stay!

Had a very disappointing stay here. Our "ocean view" room overlooked a public patio, with the ocean across a huge lawn. Not much ocean that we could see. And it was next to the open air dining patio, so the meal prep noise started at 6 am, and the meal noise, for breakfast and lunch, was substantial. We were miserable, for $110 a night, which did not include breakfast! The room itself was one of the lowest quality rooms we stayed in on our two week trip. I think this is room no. 8. It was the only room available the first night, and iin the morning when we told them about the noise and asked if there was another room available, we were offered a house for $200. We left after two nights and ended up at Finca Los Caballos, an amazing hotel with really reasonable prices (that include a wonderful breakfast) and a fantastic atmosphere. Spent three delightful nights there.

The Amor De Mar is good value, with a beautiful garden and a fun atmosphere.

Were were in an upstairs room facing the street on the first night. This wasn't great, there was a fabric curtain (which one tried not to touch) to the bathroom, which in turn smelt like pee. To be fair we mentioned this to the girls on the desk, and they informed the cleaners immediately. We moved to a bigger room down stairs which was great, airy and with ocean views. I would recommend an upstairs room with balcony and sea views if i stayed again.
The breakfasts are very good at Amor De Mar! The gardens are lovely for whiling away the afternoons and escaping the wannabe hippies which Montezuma attracts: A fun town but only worth staying a couple of nights, so much else to see in Costa Rica.

Organico cafe, Playa de los Artistas and Cocolores are the best restaurants in town by far.

Sadly during our time in Montezuma it was virtually impossible to swim due to the rip currents, the beaches away from the town, Amor De Mar side, are the nicest, if you can find a nice pool to use even better. The beaches the town side are disappointing, so much plastic washes up on the way to Playa Grande, we learned this is a major problem here caused largely by inland towns throwing waste into the rivers which ends up on these beaches. its so tragic to see, especially as turtles often mistake plastic bags for jelly fish.

For a country that is so incredibly beautiful with so much to preserve, they don't understand recycling. Its a disgrace. The forward thinking residents of Montezuma are constantly cleaning up the beaches and are fighting for their own recycling scheme. I hope they get it.

I'm a multiple-return visitor to Amor de Mar. Here's why: This fantastic ocean-front property has an amazing hammock-filled garden that makes me never want to leave the hotel. The staff are a fabulous blend of friendly, helpful and efficient. And the breakfasts in the restaurant are consistently fresh and tasty. There's a variety of rooms for different budgets. Our favourite is Rm 5. Amor de Mar is a perfect place to unplug, unwind and recharge.

If we were to paint a picture of what a tropical paradise would look like, we would paint Amor de Mar! The green lawn stretches from the dining patio to the lava rock boundary of the sea. Guests are invited to laze about in their choice of hammocks and reclining chairs. A complete breakfast menu and plenty of hot coffee are available every morning. The attention to detail is priceless, with hibiscus blossoms in the morning and tea lights in the evening. The rooms are clean, the service courteous and helpful.

It's a wonderful location, the place is very cute, very clean, very professional. We read about the upstairs rooms with the balconies, but of course so did everyone else, so they were already booked way in advance. We settled on room #8 instead, a nice big downstairs room with A/C. Beautiful and all but...

Something about the walls and floors of this place turns room #8 into an amplifier and echo chamber for every single step anybody takes upstairs. And not just the room directly above us -- an entire building of people walking around ends up sounding like a herd of drunk buffalo, constantly, late into the night, early in the morning, throughout the afternoon. And it's not like there's a bunch of wild partying kids up there, just a bunch of nice mellow couples in their 30s, 40s, 50s. But just from going up and down steps, to the bathroom, etc, somehow it ends up sounding like a bunch of REALLY loud slamming and banging. We live in the city and are accustomed to some noise. But this banging shakes the walls and wakes you up over and over. We have not got much sleep since arriving here.

Too bad, cause it's otherwise a really great spot, with the lawn and the hammocks and the breakfast and the friendly staff. But lack of sleep makes us grumpy!

My husband and I stayed here as part of our trip through Costa Rica. Out of all the hotels we stayed in this was for sure the most rustic. No air conditioning in the room so it was hot at night which made it hard to fall asleep. The windows were only screens which made it noisy. It was nice for a while, listening to all the jungle noises and the ocean. But the howler monkeys are LOUD and kept me up much of the night. The bathroom had no door, just a curtain, and was very small. The room itself was quite small also, but it was pretty clean. Just older and seemed to need some updating in the bathroom, esp. the shower. Our room did have a huge wrap around deck which was great to sit on and play cards or read at the end of the day.
The hotel staff is very nice and very helpful. The hotel is across the street from the train that brings you to Montezuma Waterfall. The grounds are beautiful and they are right on the ocean. My husband enjoyed swimming in the tidal pools. We were able to walk around on the beach from the hotel and it was a very relaxing atmosphere. The hotel is also very close to town. We just walked into town for lunches and dinners and there were plenty of choices. And the food at the hotel was delicious too. The town of Montezuma is great. Quirky and fun and a nice change from some of the more touristy spots.
For the price, location, and friendly staff the hotel is great.
