“Like sleeping in a treehouse”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2011

My husband and I stayed here as part of our trip through Costa Rica. Out of all the hotels we stayed in this was for sure the most rustic. No air conditioning in the room so it was hot at night which made it hard to fall asleep. The windows were only screens which made it noisy. It was nice for a while, listening to all the jungle noises and the ocean. But the howler monkeys are LOUD and kept me up much of the night. The bathroom had no door, just a curtain, and was very small. The room itself was quite small also, but it was pretty clean. Just older and seemed to need some updating in the bathroom, esp. the shower. Our room did have a huge wrap around deck which was great to sit on and play cards or read at the end of the day.
The hotel staff is very nice and very helpful. The hotel is across the street from the train that brings you to Montezuma Waterfall. The grounds are beautiful and they are right on the ocean. My husband enjoyed swimming in the tidal pools. We were able to walk around on the beach from the hotel and it was a very relaxing atmosphere. The hotel is also very close to town. We just walked into town for lunches and dinners and there were plenty of choices. And the food at the hotel was delicious too. The town of Montezuma is great. Quirky and fun and a nice change from some of the more touristy spots.
For the price, location, and friendly staff the hotel is great.

This year we chose Costa Rica as our winter location. Please read our forthcoming reviews from small B and B s to 5 star resorts....

This hotel has exceeded any expectation. It is perfect. Perfect. It has fitted our tastes like a glove.

We only spent 60 a night, but still have dreams about the details of this excellent location. Great art everywhere... Where ever you turn there is a jar of freshly cut exotic flowers.... Great rooms, all so personal and real... Great sea view, beautiful grassy field and landscaped gardens to the sea..

Breakfast was not included, but very reasonably priced. A selection of home made jams, and if you feel more hearty, try the yellow cheese fresh bread which is baked freshly on the premises with thinly sliced spring onions... YUM!

The thought of detail of this location is ever present. It is those little extra s that take a lot of time, are not bombarded about, but show to the detailed eye.. The fresh brewing coffee - brewing at five in the morning, for you to poor when you feel like it - . The extended library on the first floor, I mean, where do you find Armistead Maupins latest hardback just for you to read?

The female staff of this paradise make you feel welcome, and have the sense of leaving you alone and private, while still ensuring all is well.

Been all over, from Indian huts to 5 star resorts, but it s been a long time ago meeting such generosity and creativity in hospitality.

Yes. It is just perfect.......

This was our second stay at Amor de Mar. We adore the location, ocean views, and the relaxing atmosphere, 5 minutes from busy town. The hotel is charming, the rooms rustic and comfortable. The only complaint we had was the outdoor hammocks and lounge chairs by the ocean could stand to be replaced (moldy and stained) and the termites had done some damage the building since our trip there last year.
Great place to relax, and very romantic.
Staff mostly kept to themselves, with the exception of Ammi, who was wonderful.
We plan to go back again next year.

I stayed for three nights with friends and family in the two beach houses. They are so incredible nice and we all had an unforgettable time there. You can see how much love people put into the rooms and every single detail.
The quality of service depended on the person that was there, but all in all helpful and friendly.
And they have selfmade delicious bread for breakfast.

We stayed 3 nights in one of the private homes. While the location and views were great, the house needs some serious, deep cleaning and maintenace. Termite droppings were all over each morning, surfaces were dusty, the drains clogged. Also, the bed was hard as a rock with a cheap, musty blanket. We had breakfast one morning. I was so looking forward to their famous banana pancakes. However, mine was served burned to a crisp! Why would you even serve that to a guest when it was obviously blackened? We checked out 2 days early and found much better accommodations.

From the moment we walked into the outdoor lobby of Amor de Dios, with its breathtaking view of the ocean and the soothing sound of the river rushing by, we were smitten. The owner and her staff were nothing but friendly and helpful from the moment we arrived. Our simple but attractive wood-paneled room with its own balcony was the perfect retreat at the end of a long, lovely day at the beach or exploring the countryside. Between the hotel and the ocean is a broad sloping lawn with ample chairs and hammocks, providing the perfect context for enjoying a good book. In the event of a storm, the open-air patio/reception/breakfast room on the first level offered protection from the elements without forcing an early retreat to the room. Every day the kitchen staff prepared delicious, healthy breakfasts--served al fresco at burl tables adorned with hibiscus blossom--that were comparably priced (about $5) to those available in town and impeccably presented. In a nutshell, we will never stay anywhere else in Montezuma.

This hotel is not worth $95/day. It might be if breakfast were included, but it is not. Breakfasts ran $16-$20 each morning for two. The owner, one morning, even asked me how many cups of coffee I had had. Coffee is self-service here and I refilled my cup once so my response was "2 cups." She charged me an extra 500 colones ($1.00) for the refill. This was a petty and inappropriate thing to do to a guest.
