“Unbelievable!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2008

My wife and I travelled to Montezuma for our anniversary and stayed in Amor de Mar. We had the best time in this hotel and in this town. Montezuma is a cute town with several good restaurants (Playa de los Artistas, Sano Banano), wonderful things to do (horseback riding tour, beach bumming, ATV touring), and Amor de Mar is the perfect complement.

Amor de Mar has a beautiful property practically on the ocean. The property is lush, with relaxing hammocks everywhere. The tide pools are relaxing and refreshing. You're located about a 1 km walk from the town of Montezuma. The Montezuma waterfalls are within 75 yards of the front of the hotel. Breakfast, though not free, is very good; the hotel staff is attentive and ready to give you excellent advice.

There are cheaper non-A/C rooms but I don't recommend them; they are small and on the second floor, which makes no sense since heat rises. If staying here, get the A/C room; it's worth it. We had a private veranda and the beds were comfortable. Another reviewer alluded to the rooms not being clean which was not the case with us at all. The rooms were mopped and cleaned every day.

We can't wait to come back to Montezuma and stay in Amor de Mar again. Just look at the pics; they'll take your breath away.

P.S.
Best beach in area: Playa Las Manchas (1 km north of Amor de Mar; walking distance).

Best (and only) night spot: Chico's

We stayed in Montezuma for one night. The town was a really cute beach town, small and accessible. When we first arrived, the owner, who was very hospitable, told us to get our stuff out of the car quickly and into the rooms because "they empty cars fast here," i.e., there is a major problem with thieves in the area. She showed us to our room, which was on the first floor; and let us know all of the safety features of the room, such as locking the doors. She said "they had been in there and taken people's bags before." Wow, great start to the vacation! At least we were forewarned, but this made us uncomfortable to begin with. The room itself looked nothing like the "Casa de Luna" pictures that were posted. Our room was standard with a/c, but you got the impression that the rooms weren't cleaned very often, or very well (including sheets, pillows and comforter). The walls and floor looked tired and cracked. There were bugs sticking to the walls, and the room just felt very damp. I've actually stayed at Motel 8 before, and it was cleaner than this. We weren't happy about having to sleep in the bed, as soon as we saw the room, we just wanted our stay to be over. After travelling the entire day, we were so exhausted, so we tried to get some sleep in the air conditioned room. However, it sounded like people were dropping things and jumping on the floor from the room above us. We didn't exactly know what they were doing, but it sounded like they were running around, jumping off furniture, bouncing balls... it was so NOISY and DISTURBING. We could hear every little footstep in the hardwood floors above us, it was very unnerving and did nothing to help us relax. My husband at one point actually jumped out of his sleep because of some loud, echoing noises from above. We had to complain to the owner, and she said something to the people, but it only quieted them down temporarily. The positive things I can say about the place is it does have beautiful grounds, and a very nice owner. But the place itself, I would never stay there again. It is a bad memory, and I don't think I've felt so uncomfortable in many years. We couldn't wait to get out.

We were really looking forward to our stay at but Amor de mar and left having mixed feeling with a tinge of disappointed. It had its good sides and its not as good sides which can be broken down fairly simply:

Good sides: 1)the garden, tidepool and hammocks which allow for picturesque and true relaxation 2)the breakfasts which are tasty

Not as good sides: 1)our room (room #11 with "river view") was disappointing. We were told it was nice, but the "river view" was really just the lagoon under a rusty bridge. The room itself was small, dark, very damp, the sheets were never changed and it was not terribly nice overall. The room served its function ie: we slept in it at night, but we stayed away from it as much as we could during the day. Neither water, coffee, or any other amenity was provided for and at $85+ tax per night, found it a bit overpriced for what it was 2) it was rather noisy as we could hear the ATVs roaring, as well as all of the creaky floorboards from the upstairs room.

It may be that it was just our room, as it seems from the other reviews that there are nicer rooms which people have enjoyed. The garden really is lovely, and its a good place from which to explore the cute little hippy town of Montezuma, but our room made it less enjoyable.

The trip to Isla Tortuga, although a great tourist mecca, was well worth it and I would highly recommend it to anyone staying in Montezuma.

We spent 4 idyllic days at the Amor de Mar hotel in the Casa Luna house, and wished we could stay longer.
This house is large, clean and roomy with 3 bedrooms downstairs and one HUGE bedroom with a big covered deck upstairs. The bathroom is cool, being an indoor bathroom with a shower that is partially outdoors. This is a quiet place, certainly not a place to go if you plan on partying. We were on a family vacation, so it was perfect for us. Breakfast on the outdoor patio was delicious with home made breads, jams and fruit. Also Eggs, fish etc. all with the accompianment of a terrific guitar player. The tide pool was tons of fun for my 7 year old to swim in, and we certainly did not miss having a pool. I would love to come back and stay here again, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a relaxing place to swing in a hammock under the palms on the gorgeous grounds!

My two college aged kids and I stayed here a couple of nights and wish we could have stayed longer. The staff are all vey helpful and assisted me with booking a massage on the lawn with Anna Laura, a very good masseuse. Breakfasts were delicious on the idylic veranda. Room was kinda small and basic but you won't want to be in your room too much anyhow, as beautiful as the surroundings are, and the rates are very reasonable.

Just returned from Amor de Mar, and enjoyed my stay immensely. The grounds are beautiful, and the hammocks are just the perfect way to relax. There is a small tide pool right off the hotel grounds that's a great way to cool off. The rooms are simple, and rustic-similar to sleepaway camp, but hopefully you won't be in there too often. The hotel is not in the center of town, but about a 7-min. walk (either on the beach or street). It's right across from the waterfalls. Highly recommend it!

Montezuma was a very quant town with a relaxed tempo!

The houses we rented were SO Unique and comfortable with increadible views/sounds of the ocean. The kids and adults loved the hammocks, for very different purposes but all enjoyed!

The tidepools within 20 feet of the proprety were great fun. Go through town towards the Llang Llang for playing in the warm ocean water as the beaches are very nice up that way.

The hotel resteraunt served breakfast and lunch and was very good. Carla was the best of Hostesses!

The moon light horse back ride to the waterfalls was AWESOME! If you like riding horses (I use to own/compete horses) I can tell you this is your BEST opportunity for a great ride, view etc. etc.

We also enjoyed boating to the island for snorkling, it was very touristy but we still had a great time.

  • Liked — Unique Casas' located on the Ocean!
  • Disliked — A scorpion in our bed.
