“Amor de Mar- the perfect place to relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

My wife and I have traveled to Costa Rica several times and found that cities and hotels in Costa Rica can be hit or miss. Amor de Mar in Montezuma is a definite hit. The grounds are beautiful and the price is not bad. There is a gorgeous lawn in front of the ocean with multiple hammocks and chairs that are perfect to lounge around in. We've stayed at this hotel twice, and the second time made sure we had time set aside to just simply lounge around the grounds of the hotel.

Montezuma is also a great little city. Multiple dining options and plenty of opportunity for excursions such as hiking to the waterfall, surfing, ziplines, etc. The city takes a bit of travel to get to, but I've found the time taken to get there is well worth it.

Room Tip: Water view rooms are preferable.

We stayed at Amor de Mar February19th, 20th & 21st 2014

1st night was in 2nd floor room # 3 facing the road – dust from the dirt road made it difficult to have the windows open.
2nd & 3rd nights were in room #9 facing the river – nice sized room & patio. Rooms were very clean and nicely decorated. Ammi, one of the managers (?) was always very helpful with our questions and also arranged for a horseback ride for us.
Lawn between the building & the ocean is well landscaped with several different areas to sit in chairs or relax in hammocks.
The ocean front (along the water) is all lava rock, so swimming would be difficult there. Although they do have a small tide pool that you can swim in.
We walked over to the mouth of the adjacent small river & swam into the ocean from there.
There are also sand beaches either side of town.
There is a trail to a nice waterfall directly across from (behind) the hotel.

Montezuma is a small town with a very, laid back atmosphere. It’s an easy 5 minute walk into town from Amor de Mar.
We would definitely stay there again.

A friend and I decided to stay here because of the good comments of lonely planet.
The hotel itself is indeed very nice and as a beautiful grass garden in front of the beach. But our overall experience didn't reached or expectations:

We could hear perfectly the conversation in the other rooms, which is pretty annoying when people go back to their room late at night
No curtains in the room, this tiny light outside from the street kept me awake for a while
Room 3 has a sad street view. At a rate of 100$/night, we were expecting a see view or similar, not the street.
Breakfast is not included

Now the good points:
The garden
The food is excellent

I think the Amor de Mar is close to perfection, but I like this sort of thing -- the small inn with beautiful rooms, good food, moderate prices, in a spectacular natural setting with a good location. I must sing the praises of room 5, which has a rubbed dark wood balcony which itself is so beautiful. Two chairs and an orchid on the balcony; you can sit and look out over the lovely lawn down to the shore and the ocean, hear the waves crashing whenever you like. Room 5 itself has a double bed, not a large room, nice bathroom, but three walls that are half windows looking out onto everything. WOW!

Room choice here makes a difference. My first night, I was in room 2, cheaper room that was pretty ordinary, no view. The extra money for a better room is well worth it!!

Nice breakfasts and lunches. I started every day with their fruit plate, a huge bowl of chopped fresh fruit, including incredible papaya. My friends loved the coffee available all day long.

The shore right in front of the Amor is very rocky, but it is really 3 minutes' walk to swimmable beaches. The trail to the waterfall starts across the road -- beautiful outing. Walk 5 minutes to town and restaurants, stores. Montezuma is very much the English-speaking casual resort town.

The only thing I wished I had known more about when traveling here was the subject of driving in the southern Nicoya Peninsula. The bottom line is, take the Puntarenas ferry to Paquera and drive the paved road to Montezuma from there if you do not have a 4WD vehicle. That route is a good one.

Beautiful rustic hotel with gorgeous lawn overlooking the ocean. loved staying here just relaxing in the lawn chairs while working remotely on my laptop. located just outside of town and across from the water falls (cascada). enjoyed the restaurant and the yoga classes up the road. gorgeous hardwood floors and paneling. The ocean view rooms were booked but we will get one next time. take a romantic break and relax for a day or two.

Room Tip: get ocean view if you can

This hotel is beautifully landscaped! Absolutely gorgeous! The only thing we regret is that we couldn't get a room with a mini-fridge/kitchen area. It was right across from the waterfalls entrance and there were great beaches within walking distance that were less crowded. Great romantic spot!

This is a beautiful small hotel right on the pacific coast. Our room overlooked the ocean and had its own balcony, where we sat and had a glass of wine while our 9 month old slept. It was a perfect little oasis and very quiet. During the afternoon, we were invited to use the small grounds which are littered with hammocks and recliners where we relaxed and listened to the crashing waves. there is a little tide pool, also on the property. and a fresh water shower to have a rinse in afterward. The walk to the main strip is about 10 minutes and the beach is quite nice, except quite wavy, good for surfers... too scary for me to go in. There is a smaller rocky beach closer by and we managed to take a dip in there. Nothing beats swimming in the grandiose ocean and being lulled by the waves. We had the breakfast there, all homemade, the quinoa was really good, but I had the bread and cheese which wasn't to my taste. In any case, quite a lovely, clean, inviting location

Room Tip: Make sure to choose a room with a balcony ... makes all the difference.
