I think the Amor de Mar is close to perfection, but I like this sort of thing -- the small inn with beautiful rooms, good food, moderate prices, in a spectacular natural setting with a good location. I must sing the praises of room 5, which has a rubbed dark wood balcony which itself is so beautiful. Two chairs and an orchid on the balcony; you can sit and look out over the lovely lawn down to the shore and the ocean, hear the waves crashing whenever you like. Room 5 itself has a double bed, not a large room, nice bathroom, but three walls that are half windows looking out onto everything. WOW!
Room choice here makes a difference. My first night, I was in room 2, cheaper room that was pretty ordinary, no view. The extra money for a better room is well worth it!!
Nice breakfasts and lunches. I started every day with their fruit plate, a huge bowl of chopped fresh fruit, including incredible papaya. My friends loved the coffee available all day long.
The shore right in front of the Amor is very rocky, but it is really 3 minutes' walk to swimmable beaches. The trail to the waterfall starts across the road -- beautiful outing. Walk 5 minutes to town and restaurants, stores. Montezuma is very much the English-speaking casual resort town.
The only thing I wished I had known more about when traveling here was the subject of driving in the southern Nicoya Peninsula. The bottom line is, take the Puntarenas ferry to Paquera and drive the paved road to Montezuma from there if you do not have a 4WD vehicle. That route is a good one.
