“What a tranquil experience!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013 for a stay in December 2012

Cabuya is real CR...we were lucky to have found Casa Cabuya!! Family with 2 teens spent Christmas here (5 nights). Email communication with Sal was great and he met us when we arrived. He showed us around and then left. David took care of the property and usually arrived around 9ish? He did his business quietly but we enjoyed sharing coffee and trying to chat with him!! The locals walking around were so friendly..always a smile and Hola! There were no surprises and property was as described. Beautiful wood all around. beds were comfortable. Might be tight for 6 but 4 was perfect. WIFI worked the entire time with no issues. We enjoyed listening to the monkeys and birds each morning and evening...sitting in the covered bbq area. There is now gorgeous vegetation around the pool. We felt safe and secure the entire time. Sal has installed a large safe in the master bedroom. We ate at Cafe Cayote, visited Montezuma, hiked Cabo Blanco and spent some time over Sta. Teresa way. I would say there is a bit of road noise from the atv's as the Casa is on the Mal Pais road - but it was never an issue. We also had a noisy family staying at the property next door but that can happen anywhere! If I could make some suggestions to Sal...maybe have a small booklet of local information (maps, house info, internet code, up to date tide charts, etc). Also to supply some charcoal for the bbq...we didn't purchase any as we would only have used it once or twice. We were lucky to have spent or Christmas celebration here!

“Nice but expected better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

We stayed here in August 2012. Overall, the place was very nice but I guess we felt there was a lack of any hospitality by the owner. When we arrived to Montezuma, we were told by taxi drivers that they would not take us to Cabuya because of the high spring tides. When I attempted to tell this to the owner he proceeded to tell me that this wasn't the case etc. but eventually helped out with speaking with the taxi drivers (my spanish is basic). I never heard from the owner again, even to check up on our stay.
When we eventually arrived to the house, there was a guy who showed me briefly around and explained everything in Spanish (thankfully I understood most of this). We weren't given any information about the so-called 'wi-fi' (it never worked anyway) nor about anything with regards to the house/leaving/check out etc. There were absolutely no supplies in the house, not even toilet paper. A little disappointing considering we arrived very late at night.
The house was clean and pool was lovely. We just would have preferred a more friendly experience (which we happened to get on the carribean side of Costa Rica), where the owner made a huge effort to explain about the area, make sure the house had basic supplies etc.

“Stunning House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2012 for a stay in February 2012

We actually stayed at this house two times, last November and Feb 2012. First off the house is gorgeous. Tastefully decorated and very clean. While being fully open it was not a problem for us. We enjoyed the fully fenced property with a locked gate to give us a sense of privacy and security. The pool was the perfect temperature, not too warm and not too cold. The covered BBQ area with a sink is the perfect setting for an outdoor dinner and with the pool right there great for a dip while cooking.

There had been improvements made to the house since our last visit. A two piece bathroom had been added to the upper floor which made is great for night time use. Perfect for us oldies, lol.

We loved the side terrace for a shady spot to relax.

The landscaping is gorgeous, two large trees in the front of the house give shade keeping the house cool and the pool is surrounded by helanconias that give it a beautiful tropical feel.

Being cooks we appreciated the full fridge, while the electric cook top was sufficient a gas stove was missed.

The property was meticiously cared for daily by David, for those who crave full privacy as we do one might find the erratic timing a bit intrusive.

This house is great value for your money. With a full sized washer and ample clotheslines it is a great addition for the guests.

Cabuya is a quirky town, the beach is a short walk away but for us the rocky beach is not as pleasant for swimming as other beaches in Costa Rica. The island is well worth the visit just make sure you time it with the tide times. Coyote Cafe next door makes the best pizza, Dolphines Soda at the corner serves up the best cassados in town, Dona Lila is a doll. There are two grocery stores that provide all you need to make a great dinner, make sure you visit a typico soda next the the last grocery store, Tana serves up the best food ever in a relaxed atmosphere. There is a lot of available fish to purchase in town, try the fishing camp at the end of the soccer field road or Bings on the main road going towards Montezuma.

“Wonderfull&quiet house”

Stayed there last summer with my girlfriend. We met the friendly owner "Sal" at his lovely hotel in alajuela. The pool and the garden were incredible and the house has just everything you need. The coyote cafe just next door is great two. You need to know that this in an open type house so you gonna have some insects visting once in a while. Don't worry each beds is equipped with a net!
