As Costa Rica waterfalls go, this one is one of the easiest to get to. Others involve long climbs up and down steep hills, or very long walks inland to the falls. The Montezuma falls is different because it is just a few hundred feet past the last hotel in town, and there's no hill between you and the falls. But you do have to negotiate the rocks along the stream to get back to it. I wouldn't take kids under 12 or. It's not that treacherous, but for some city kids who aren't used to nature, an accident could happen.
The falls are spectacular. The air is a good ten degrees cooler in the whole area of the falls. You feel like just resting and reading. The water is cold but wonderful. Like the rest of Montezuma you may be a bit crowded in by the usual pseudo-hippies and travel blinded 20-somethings. Go early in the morning, as with most things.
