Owner description: The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

“Come learn and see incredible butterflies!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2014 NEW

In brief: One of my favorite parts of our trip to Monteverde. Super well organized to learn about and see butterflies in 4 environments.

The pros:
-The learning center at the beginning of the tour: The guide shows you live insects and butterflies from all over Monteverde
-Friendly and knowledgable staff
-Really well organized learning center and 4 individual gardens
-Walk through each of the 4 gardens to be in the middle of hundreds of butterflies of many different kinds
-You get to take a butterfly that's just left its coccoon and dried out from the learning center and release it in the 1st garden.
-Amazing feeling to see, touch, and experience these butterflies in their environments
-Cost is $15 per person, not including transportation

The cons:
-Perhaps more self-guided time in the gardens after the tour

Could be better:
-Gift shop is pretty basic - even offering coffee here would be great

“Less show more education”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2014

I really liked this place but although it has butterflies it is not as showy as other butterfly gardens and tries to use local species. I give it 4 stars because I rarely give 5 and because some people might be expecting the more glitzy butterfly garden that we find in Florida or in some major botanical gardens. Maybe this should be called an "insect garden" as its primary goal is to educate people about insects in the tropics.. This is an old established feature of Monteverde life and relies heavily on student interns to provide guided tours. The interns are very well trained and a lot of fun. I would recommend this for families because there are some hands on activities that children would enjoy.

“beautiful butterflies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2014

The guide was great. . Did you know that butterflies love to be drunk? Plates of fruit are set out to ferment just for these beauties.

“Best ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2014

I was completely blown away by how much fun this place was. Yes, there are butterflies, but also all kinds of other insects, all presented by experts who are at least as entertaining as they are knowledgeable. I came expecting to see butterflies, but what I got was a talk that had me laughing out loud and a walk through some beautiful gardens. Do go!

“Come for the butterflies stay for the insects!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2014 via mobile

One of my favorite places in monteverde. I love you guys, thank you so much for your warm welcome! Also coolest bugs I have ever seen and learned about. Now i love insects and want to hold them. Most awesome things I saw there? Hercules beetle, stingless scorpion, stick insects, white faced capuchins, toucans, and lots of beautiful butterflies, of course. Thank you!
