Owner description: The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014 NEW

I would highly recommend the Monteverde Butterfly Garden. Our tour guide, Nathan, was so knowledgeable (and had a great, dry sense of humor) to make it a super interesting and fascinating experience. We learned tons about butterflies as well as many other insects in the area. Highly recommend it!

This was fun...our 5 year thought it was a highlight of our trip. And her two science teacher parents had a good time.

“Informative & entertaining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

This place is run by university student volunteers from the US & Canada who are majoring in a related field. Our guide, Michael, was a very personable & knowledgeable young man. What impressed me most was that when he didn't know something, he'd tell us he didn't know. So obviously, when he told us something, he knew what he was talking about!

We went for the butterflies & saw a number of varieties, but we also saw & got an explanation of a number of other insects. Michael showed them & explained them in layman's terms, & although I am definitely not a big insect person, he made the learning enjoyable. What was most interesting was Michael's story of how he let some sort of ant (I think it was the leaf cutter) bite him in the name of science. I couldn't figure out if that's something only a guy would do or only a scientist, because it pulled the skin & drew blood!

We also went to the butterfly garden at the Selvatura Park, but while these butterfly gardens were smaller than the big one at Selvatura, the overall tour included much more information. We loved this one.

“Do this first”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2014

This tour provides such an amazing foundation for any of the hikes in the rain forest. The guides were incredible knowledgable and entertaining. Michael was excellent ! The butterflies drew us in but it was the expanded tour of so many other relationships with insects, butterflies and the cloud forest that really opened up my experience.
The gardens themselves are expansive and you learn and have hands on experiences of the inter relationships! the location is outside of town so you are actually in the cloud forest, not in a reconstructed habitat.
This tour should be your first activity in the Santa Elena area, it will provide such a great backdrop to all your other experiences.

Loved the insect information and the butterfly gardens where great. Very knowledgeable staff. Got some great butterfly pictures. The Glass wings were especially beautiful and hard to see in the wild.
