Owner description: The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

“Very informative and educational!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

What I loved most about this place is that the people giving the information and conducting the tours are really into what they do! You can tell that they love sharing the knowledge they have with others and are doing this because it is something they love. We had a very quick and information introduction about all kinds of interesting insects, then walked through the various butterfly gardens and got to see the different types of butterflies found in Costa Rica. At the end of the tour, our guide offered to start from the beginning again because we had come in about 10 minutes late and missed the very beginning. She stayed with us after the tour and gave us all the information we had missed!

“Fantastic tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013 via mobile

We spent more than 1.5 hours in the garden! Fantastic! You can see a lot of butterflies! You first start with the tour and then you can take your time to take as many pictures as you like! Great experience. Strongly recommended!

“Even better than imagined...perfect family activity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

A very well conceived tour/activity which combines education (of a highly interesting subject) with fun and human touches (each visitor gets his own butterflies to release into the sanctuary) which really has something for everyone in the family. Our 6 year old loved it and will never forget all the vibrant colored butterflies perched on her fingers. Mom and dad also loved the beetles and other exotic insects included in the tour as well. Highly knowledgeable and engaging guide hugely added to the experience. Highly recommend to anyone.

“more than expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

I've been to butterfly gardens before with my wife and I generally walk through as my wife oohs and ahhs. But in this case the guided tour was fascinating. I have a new respect and understanding of bugs. Real eye opener. Oh...pretty butterflies too.

“Great tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

We got a great tour in the gardens. A lady from denmark gave us the tour and it was very intresting. Probably the cutest thing we did was releasing some butterflies.
