Owner description: The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

“Beautiful and worthwhile”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

We loved the butterfly garden. This is the 'original' butterfly garden in Monteverde, I believe, and probably the most authentic. There is another (maybe bigger) one at Selvatura, but that place is pricy (and far) so we walked to this one. The guide was very knowledgable and the butterflies beautiful.

“More than a Butterfly Garden!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

If you plan to go to Monteverde, don't miss out on the butterfly garden! In four different gardens, you can observe many different, gorgeous butterflies and maybe even get a shot of a blue Morpho spreading out its wings, if you get lucky. But you get so much more for your money than that! The 1 hour tour includes an insight into the arachnoid- and insect world that allows you to understand why they will probably outlive the human race. :) The guides (who speak perfect English) know all about their tricks and customs that will simply amaze you! Their fun and informative tour is definitely worth every penny!

“A MUST-SEE for Monteverde! The best butterfly garden I've been to!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

More than just a typical butterfly garden where you just observe a bunch butterflies in one big room. This butterfly garden experience has 4 different Costa Rican butterfly microhabitats and an insect and spider room filled with lots of LIVE creatures, and their own leaf cutter ant colony under glass! Entertaining and educational tours last 1-2hrs. Like a lot of people, I am not always one for following around a tour guide but trust me this is what puts this place ahead of all other butterfly gardens I have been to. DO THE TOUR, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! The talks were delivered by passionate and intelligent experts and were littered with hilarious (while still informative) insect and spider related jokes. The tour-guides are top-notch with the ability to cater their presentation to adults and/or children. David and Bryna are wonderful owners!

“Beautiful place, very nice guide”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

This place takes a bit of a drive from town but is worth it. The guide ( a very nice girl from Denmark) was well informed and was great with the kids. You first visit the insects and then go to the different butterflies areas. The butterflies are beautiful.
Not an option for handicaps.

We give it only 3 due to the entrance fee which is a bit expensive.

“More than just butterflies!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

While I was worried that the butterfly garden might not be worth the $20 admission fee when I first arrived, the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor and we were not disappointed. He discussed fascinating facts about a number of arthropods and insects that they had on display in addition to touring us through four different butterfly habitats and showing us the underground view of their leaf cutter ant colony. Very educational and some good photo opportunities. White faced capuchin monkeys hang around there too, we heard one jump onto the roof in the middle of the tour!
