“Avoid room 302”

Heliconia Hotel

Jul 17, 2008

We spent 2 nights each at 4 different hotels throughout Costa Rica and loved them all EXCEPT this one. We had room 302 in one of the older buildings half way up the hill. It was what they call a Master Suite that has 2 king beds and a queen up in a loft. We went with our 3 kids aged 16,14,and 10. The building and bedding in the unit looks like it was built in 1975 and has not been updated. They say they are a "green" hotel by trying to get their guests to not put ANY toilet paper down the toilet and have a bin next to it. Good luck with getting anyone to do that and have it sit in your bathroom over night. The shower/bathtub itself had been repaired by sticking some gray putty around the edge)see pic. The hot water was come and go. There is also an indoor patio that has coffee stains and other liquid stains all over it. Enough of the room, now for the lobby down the hill. It was very dark and the carpet was filthy with all people coming in and out. The grounds themselves have no charm or appeal and are very poorly landscaped. In the hotels defense there are some new smaller cottages up the hill higher and a new big one that looks like an exact copy of the building we stayed in being built. I did not get to check any of the new ones out and they might be cleaner and in better condition.

We stayed in this hotel for two days in April and like it a lot. We had a nice and big room in the "300s". Yes, it's uphill, but we didn't even consider the shuttle! It's fun having a little walk in the evening, after all, you're in a mountainous area! Breakfast was OK, food in the restaurant as well (we didn't find it as expensive as some people claim here). It's a rather big property, so you won't be alone, if you like "typical" style lodging, this is not t!

“Choose carefully.”

Heliconia Hotel

First, this hotel has spacious, beautiful rooms and gorgeous views. Be prepared to do some climbing though, as the rooms are spaced out along the side of a mountain. The shuttle will carry you up to your room if you have the patience to wait.
Don't expect a lot of luxuries in the room, such as a TV or soap. Just the basics here, but there are plenty of rooms with comfortable king-sized beds.
Finally, Heliconia needs to move past the archaic practice of keeping a single metal key for each room on a huge fob. First that means that only one person in your party can have a key to the room Second, if the hotel staff were to say, give your key to another customer instead of their room key, there's no way to figure out what they did wrong. And they might then claim you lost it. Yes. This happened.

“Nice Room - Steep Hill”

We stayed for three pleasant days at the Haliconia. The hotel is not a five star resort but it is a comfortable, clean and enjoyable place to stay. Our room was in a wooden cabin up a steep hill. The walk between the main building and our room was quite a workout. This place would not be suitable to anybody with mobility problems. Parking our rented SUV in the adjacent space was also a bit awkward. The room was huge and all wood inside. It had a king size bed on the main level and two twin beds in the loft. The bathroom had a massive walk-in shower and there was also a large soaker tub off of the main bedroom. The room didn’t have a television but we didn’t go to Costa Rica to watch TV. The rooms also don’t have any heating or air conditioning (or insulation). Monteverde can get cool and windy at times. One night we used a comforter from one of the twin beds as an extra layer on our bed. The wind was very loud that night. Our room didn’t have a phone, although other rooms did. However, the staff let us use one of their phones in the main building and unlike many hotels, it did not block our pre-paid calling card.
The staff at the tour desk was very helpful. They proposed many activities and even offered their opinion (good and bad) of activities from companies competing with their official list. They even offered to book one of the competing tours for us.
Breakfast was not included in our rate but as we didn’t like the look of it, we decided to buy some cereal and milk from the near-by supermarket. We also didn’t like to look or the prices of the evening meals. There are many decent restaurants within walking distance of the Haliconia.
Overall we enjoyed our stay in the Haliconia and would stay there again.

“not so great”

Heliconia Hotel

Mar 25, 2008

Our room (No. 07) was located at the top of a very steep hill. Coming down was OK but walking up the hill was a killer! A hotel shuttle was offered but generally it was not available when needed.

The hotel staff were very pleasant and our room was spacious, clean and had a good view, but the wooden floors, wall and ceiling were unappealing and made it feel box-like.
