El Establo was 1 of 5 hotels that we stayed at in Costa Rica and the most lacking. It is over sized, over priced and just the staff are just not friendly.
The hotel is a sprawling arrangement of buildings up the side of a mountain. My room was in a building the furthest away, the 900's, it took 15 to 20 minutes to walk to the restaurant/reception area down hill. Up hill is do able but not easy. Don't plan on an evening stroll around this property. In fact we never saw anyone strolling around. The hallway to the room was a dark corridor with no visible security. The building seemed quite isolated.
The room was physically nice with two queen sized beds and on a clear day a beautiful view from the floor to ceiling patio doors. However, we could hear all the noise from the people in the next room, the tv remote didn't work, the shower didn't always have hot water, the toilet was clogged and then over flowed. The bathroom also has a strange set up with a louvered window that vents into the public hallway. There is no A/C or fan, the only way to get air into the room is by opening louvered vents above the patio doors. There are no screens so you get visitors. There was a safe box in the room but we were never given the key. One day, after being out all day we came back to find out that none of the electronic room keys worked and had to go back down the side of the mountain to have them replaced. There is a shuttle that transports guests up and down the mountain side, it didn't seem to operate on any kind of schedule. We frequently had to wait 10+ minutes for the van.
The staff at Establo was probably the most unfriendly of any place I have ever been to. My Spanish is ok but limited, however a smile is universal, you will not find one at this hotel. A large portion of the visitors were from the USA or Great Britain, however the staff doesn't speak any English or just don't want to try and communicate. The exception to this was the front desk were English was spoken. The van drivers seemed miserable like they hated their jobs.
There are 2 restaurants on the property. After having dinner at the main one we decided to pass on the other more expensive restaurants. Do yourself a favor don't bother with either. They are way over priced and the food is not so great. A bottle of water that sells down the street for $2 costs $6 here. Average priced at the other hotels $2-3. A dish of ice cream, 2 scoops $7.00. Four of us had dinner at the main restaurant, 1 bottle of water, 2 individual pizzas, small/med sized bowl pasta with tomato sauce, taco, 2 dishes of ice cream and 1 coffee. $90.00 USD before tip. You know they're soaking the tourists. The next night we had dinner at a wonderful Italian restaurant within walking distance, lovely people, excellent food, less expensive. Breakfast at Establo is a buffet which was over crowded and unorganized. There is a grill for pancakes/omelets but the wait was always over 10 minutes to get any service.
There are 2 pools, I never saw any one in them. My kids scooped out over 50 flies out of the upper level pool. While my kids were using the pool the pool guy actually came and added a bucket of chlorine to the pool. I told him I didn't think it was safe when there were people were in it, he just shrugged. There was gym equipment near the upper level pool but most of it didn't work and there was never anyone around to help. They list a tennis court and a basket ball court which is a joke because there was no basketball or tennis racket to be found. The basketball court was up the hill past my block of rooms and looked abandoned. The only time I saw the tennis court in use was by the transportation vans turning around.
This is a "resort" that needs to quit expanding and get their act together. The staff needs to better trained. I would not stay here again.
