“Paradise in the Clouds”

We would go back here in a heart beat. Fantastic grounds and tree houses. The owner and hostess is Jennifer King. She and her staff looks after your every need and helps you plan your stay to meet your every need and desires. You will love Jennifer. She live above the main house which over looks the mountains and on a clear day you can see the Pacific ocean. Afternoon "tea" can not be missed (tea, soft drinks, juices, wines, beers, snacks and desserts are included in "tea"). All this is served to you in the spacious main house room overlooking her grounds and the mountain valley. Nice sunsets if you are not immersed in the clouds. We were there in April which is the end of the dry season and before the wet season started. We would see the clouds roll in and feel the mist of the clouds in the morning and sometimes in the evening. We were immersed in the clouds and cloud forest -- amazing.

There is an onsite nature trail which immerses you in her 13 acre private preserve. It can be steep but is well worth the time and effort. You will be accompanied on the trail by Jennifer's two dogs which love to run ahead of you then wait for you to catch up. A pure joy to see them run and having fun. She also has three cats on the premise that come and go at the main house or may even venture down to your tree house to say hi.

Jennifer arranged two tours for us after we arrived with experience guide who she know and respects. We recommend doing just that encase of bad weather or other conflicts. One tour was a night walking tour of a nature preserve to observe nocturnal animals. It was an amazing experience and the guide could hear and find these bird and animals moving thru forest and point them our with a powerful flashlight and pointer (each hiker is also provided flashlight to walk with). We saw sloths, monkeys, sleeping birds, a gray fox, and other nocturnal manuals. We recommend this as a must tour and also order in your dinner which is fresh, hot, and waiting at your room when you return. The second tour was a 4 hour day light walking tour of another preserve with an experienced guide. Another fantastic experience to see monkeys, many other animals, numerous birds varying from large colorful birds to hummingbirds.

Our third day there we went to Sky Trek which was arranged thru our travel agent ahead of time. We did the Combo package - hanging bridges, tram, and ziplines. See our review of Sky Tram elsewhere.

Room Tip: Eden is a one bedroom down stairs with an adjoining a hot tub and a view or the trees. the entry lev...

We stayed in the Cascade room for 3 nights in February. Although we were disappointed that a treehouse was not available, the Cascade room is lovely and comfortable, with a separate sitting room facing the great view, a private garden, and a trickling cascade. Jen, Natalia, Geo, Olman, and all the other staff are friendly and attentive--they really make the experience special. The architecture and local materials reflect the location and take advantage of the spectacular views of the surrounding rainforest to the Nicoya Gulf. The sunset happy hour is not to be missed, and the cooked to order breakfasts perfect. The lounge and dining areas are so comfortable that, although we had a car, we chose to order in every night. Geo set a beautiful table and waited on us better than in any restaurant. The hotel is a few bumpy miles from town, but for us, that's the good news--a quiet location in the forest. We are birders who had been to Monteverde before and wanted to connect with a bird guide we'd met 11 years ago. Although the hotel employs their own guides, they found Danilo for us and arranged to have him guide us for 2 days of great birding at Santa Elena Cloud Forest and the Curicancha Reserve. We are so glad that the hotel we'd originally wanted to book was full at that time and now would go nowhere else at Santa Elena.

Room Tip: Book early to get a tree house, but if none are available, the rooms are terrific.

Family of 4 stayed three nights in Neverland. Where to begin?? The accommodations and grounds are amazing, but more importantly the service is unbelievable. Jenn and Natalia are so welcoming you feel at home immediately. The breakfasts and tea time snacks are delicious. You truly feel that you are staying a few days in a good friend's home. Anything you need - arranging tours, questions about the area, food ordered in - they simply make it happen. Don't miss this spot!

Great place with sweeping views of the valley. Custom service from made to order breakfast to tour arrangements. Rooms are very comfortable, clean, and private. Landscaped waterfalls are soothing at night. Quick 5 min taxi to the center of Santa Elena. You pay for the premium services.

Wow, where to start?!? I have done a (very) substantial amount of international traveling over the years & when finding a place this enjoyable I'm tempted to keep it a secret, but then my sense of goodwill wins out and just have to share... It's an exceptionally well run B&B with a genuine warmth and hospitality that we don't see often enough. Staff was attentive to every need without hesitation or any attitude. Went 'above and beyond' in many areas. Excellent breakfast served 'a la carte' fresh and to-order, and a very liberal afternoon 'happy hour.' B&B consists of the main house with 3 rooms and 5 treehouses (see photos).

My wife & I were supposed to stay for 4 nights, but due to problems with the rental car we changed our plans and stayed for 7 nights instead. Hotel staff was able to accommodate, but only by us changing rooms every night for the final 3 nights of our stay (appears they keep close to fully booked all the time - and for good reason...) Under normal circumstances, changing rooms for 3 nights in a row would obviously be a pain, but in reality it gave us the unusual (and wonderful) opportunity to stay in 4 different treehouses, all of which are uniquely different in floor plans and amenities. Few people get to do this; the Monte Verde area is a bit small & secluded with limited access, and all the other guests we met at the hotel were staying 2 - 4 nights total, which is about right for the Monte Verde area. So by default and a crappy rental car, we had the relaxing luxury of being able to stay much longer than the typical guest, do everything at a laid-back pace, and sample full half the rooms in the hotel.

The treehouses all differ in size, # of bedrooms and common area spaces, and amenities, but all are relatively large for the expected # of guests, very clean, extremely comfortable, and well maintained. Check their website for the individual room descriptions; having stayed in 4 of the treehouses we can honestly say that their online descriptions are valid and accurate, and will very comfortable accommodate the stated # of people without feeling cramped or like you're falling all over each other. Grounds are beautiful and well maintained, location just outside town is perfect with incredible views. All the treehouses have massive windows (some rooms are more window than wall...) that really emphasize the nature, you just have to see it to believe it. (Note, see my other reviews for the attractions in the Monte Verde/Santa Elena area).

The B&B staff was invaluable in dealing with the rental car company (Economy Rent a Car - BEWARE!) and helping us resolve the problems with the broken-down rental vehicle. We could NOT have managed to deal with the horrible rental car company without the help of the B&B staff, which took considerable time & effort on their part, which they did not have to do. They even had one of their maintenance guys change a flat tire for us, without even being asked. Special tip of the hat to Natalia and Giovanni - wonderful people!

Bottom line - I seriously doubt you will find anything else this good in the MV/SE area, and we rank our stay as one of the 'top 10' most enjoyable experiences ever at a hotel.

Tip # 1 - The B&B offers to arrange for guided tours, you need to take them up on this. My wife & I are much more the 'DIY' types and have a natural cynicism when it comes to guided tours, however this was different. The tours were private, group size extremely small (2-6 people max) and the B&B has a couple of select guides that they use that make all the difference in the world. The knowledge of the guides in terms of spotting the wildlife & where to find it made ALL the difference on our tours. Ask for Cokie - we took one tour with him, and were so impressed we took 2 additional wildlife tours with him the following 2 days. Would have taken more if he were available....

Tip # 2 - Prior to the trip, go to REI (or similar) and buy a couple of mosquito coils. Netting is not required, but the B&B is in well nestled into the woods and it is inevitable that some mosquitoes WILL get into your room, there's just no way around it. We purchased two wristbands (don't remember the brand, but they were a dark green color, about $3 each) that are generally intended to be used for hiking, but we decided to leave them open on the nightstands overnight. Worked like a charm, not a single bite (except for the one night we forgot to leave them out, then we both received a handful of bites...)

Tip # 3 - Beware Economy Rent a Car - the miserable experiences we encountered with them throughout our trip, from start to finish, will be detailed elsewhere on the internet. Post-trip, I found many many many horrible reviews of Economy Rent a Car posted online, sure wish I had seen them prior to the trip.

enjoy!

Room Tip: get one of the treehouse rooms - it's fully detached from the main house, has exceptional privac...

I don't give out a lot of 5's for lodging. A place can be pretty sweet, but it takes something special to earn a top rating. Hidden Canopy fills the bill. My wife and I rented the Rivendell treehouse for three nights on our 10 night stay in Costa Rica, and it was everything we'd hoped for, a truly unique experience. The treehouse itself was recently built, completed in the last several months, and the layout and quality are excellent. The website pictures in no way overstate what you will experience, both interior and exterior. Rivendell, with two levels, a large seating area and balcony upstairs, two bedrooms and two and a half baths, was larger than what the two of us needed, but it was the only treehouse available when we booked last fall. Keep that in mind if you want to stay in one of the treehouses, and book early.

The grounds are beautifully landscaped, with a cascading water feature and koi ponds following the length of the path down to the treehouses. Gardens and trees dot the property, housing a variety of bird life. Views of the mountains are breathtaking.

The luxurious surroundings and stunning views are only part of the package. We began to appreciate the great service and wonderful amenities offered by Hidden Canopy immediately. Natalia arranged for our transportation from San Jose, and while our driver didn't speak English, he was competent and his van comfortable. He was waiting at the airport when we arrived. We had priced independent drivers, and the rate was competitive. We had considered renting a car, but with the cost of insurance, using drivers wasn't a huge luxury, and one that was very much appreciated, especially in the mountains, where the roads are pretty dicey.

Natalia greeted us with wine at the main house, and explained the layout of the property prior to showing us to our treehouse. Throughout our stay, she answered our every question and arranged a number of activities for us, as well as taxi's for trips to restaurants and activities. Natalia was truly a great resource, and we thank her for the excellent service. The owner, Jenn, was away on personal business, but the entire hotel ran like a well oiled machine under Natalia's expert handling. All the staff members were friendly, helpful and professional. Gio was always good for a laugh or a little gag, and we appreciated his attitude a lot.

Others have written about the great breakfasts, "high teas", and stunning grounds, so I won't say more than to affirm all the positive comments. I will say the high teas are a great way to meet other guests, make new friends and share experiences, and this added to the special ambiance of Hidden Canopy.

There are a couple aspects of the property worth mentioning, not complaints, just things prospective renters should be aware of. Rivendell is the farthest treehouse from the main house, not a long walk (maybe a hundred yards), but the walk back to the main house is a fairly steep uphill path. I'm in average shape for a guy in his early sixties, and I was puffing by the time I got up the hill. I kind of liked the workout and got used to it, but it is something to be considered. The beds are quite firm (for our tastes) but comfortable. Baths include a rain shower and all those jets in front. The minor downside of the property was the water pressure in the shower (on the low side) and available hot water supply (if we took two consecutive showers, hot water would run out by the end of the second shower).

All in all, Hidden Canopy is a top notch lodging experience, a place we would be eager to return to. I highly recommend it if you plan to visit this beautiful region of Costa Rica.

I praise Hidden Canopy Treehouses in detail on my travel blog - Travelling Angeleno http://bit.ly/14XL8St

In brief summary, the proprietor, Jen. has created a magnificent seven room mountain top retreat with an unparalleled view of the Monteverde cloud forest that comes right up to the floor to ceiling windows of your room extending out from the mountain side and combined that with pampering service and hospitality. You definitely feel like a guest in her home. Somehow Jen makes it feel like you've been friends with her for years.
