If I could give Mariposa more stars for service I would. Our hosts literally couldn't have done more for us from booking excursions to organising transport and making fabulous breakfasts. The accomodation was clean and very peaceful with much classier rooms than the reasonable price would have suggested. My favourite thing was watchingthe humming birds from the bench outside my window in the morning. I have never written a review of anywhere I have stayed before but had such a great experience that it seemed only right. Book now but be quick, I've recommended it to all my friends!

My wife and I stayed at the Mariposa B&B for two nights. The place is lovely and the family goes to great lengths to ensure you have a wonderful stay. Esteban even helped us find a mechanic & negotiate with our rental car company to get the repair paid for after our muffler fell apart! The toast is homemade bread cooked by Esteban's mother, and it melts in your mouth. They make mean pancakes & gallos pintos as well!

Mariposa is minutes drive (or even walk) from the Monteverde Reserve, Cheese Factory, and Bosque Eterno de los Ninos. It's a 10-15 minute drive from the city center, which affords a peaceful environment. The rooms look out on a beautiful stand of trees, and we loved watching the hummingbirds and monkeys from our porch.

Make reservations early, it's a relatively small place.

I really hope that everyone chooses this place when trying to decide upon Monteverde accomodations. This is a family owned bed and breakfast. The older son, Esteban, was more than helpful every step of the way. He helped us book tours and transportation prior to our stay. His mother makes THE BEST breakfast in the morning, which consists of fruit, huge pancakes, eggs, juice, and coffee. We are usually big eaters, but we even had trouble finishing all the food. The lodging was beautiful and exceptionally clean. The bathroom water flow is a bit low... BUT the price is definitely unbeatable. We really enjoyed the quiet location too. A 5 to 10 minute walk down the hill will take you to a wonderful ice cream shop (made on-site). It's not a horrible walk into town... we enjoyed a 30 min walk. YOU DO NOT want to stay in town... it is extremely busy and seems really hectic. The B&B is also very close to Monteverde Cloud Forest, we were able to get there pretty fast via taxi in the morning and managed to see three queztels first thing!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!!

It was hard leaving the Mariposa ! The cabin we shared as a group of 4 exceeded our expectations with two bedrooms with baths, a lovely kitchen/dining area, a porch and even a washing machine. All this was located in a gorgeous Monteverde setting! Mariposa is located very close to the Monteverde preserve (indeed, about as close as you can stay) . The town is located just a couple of miles away, so you really get a more secluded feel while being close to everything. With great breakfasts on top of it all the Mariposa is an excellent value. Esteban and family have a real gem and will certainly top our list the next time we are in Monteverde!

The Mariposa B&B is located on a really beautiful property very near the Cloud Forest Reserve. While you occasionally get a little noise (read: two-stroke motorcycle engines) from the street, it is generally a very peaceful and serene place to stay. We loved it!

The room where we stayed was in a 4 (or 5?) room two-story structure set against the hillside. It's beautifully built with skylights and tons of windows. There's a deck with a cushy couch which is great for spotting birds that visit the property (we saw hummingbirds, a toucan, and a bright iridescent blue motmot with a gorgeous long racketed orange tail), as well as butterflies including two beautiful morphos. There's also a beautiful shared kitchen that's fully equipped, which helped us save some money by self-catering. There was also a washing machine but we didn't need to do any so I didn't ask if we could use it.

There's also another structure with more rooms, which we didn't visit, but guests at breakfast were staying there. I think the kitchen is only in the building we were staying in (we paid $45 which is more than the $40 reported by others and by Lonely Planet, so maybe this is why -- regardless it was a tremendous value for the money).

The breakfast was SO GOOD. A gorgeous fruit plate including perfectly ripe mango, cantaloupe, and papaya chunks. You can order pancakes, gallo pintos, eggs, and toast. Portions were very generous -- I couldn't even finish!

Service was fantastic. While the proprietress doesn't speak much English, we were able to understand her even with our extremely limited Spanish, and her sons speak very good English. They are all extremely polite and helpful. You can tell there's a lot of care and pride put into the place, and we were charmed by the cute touches like the beautifully folded towels and even toilet paper decorations! (I've attached some photos -- seriously, I never review stuff online but I loved this place so much that I took a ton of photos in anticipation of this review!)

This is a true gem. The accommodations are somewhat basic (e.g., the shower uses an electric water heater since it doesn't have hot running water) but the building is all beautiful wood and tile and skylights. We felt like we were in a well-appointed treehouse in the forest. Can't wait to come back!

My cousin and I (2 girls) stayed at Mariposa Bed & Breakfast for 2 nights and it was absolutely wonderful. The B&B is owned and operated by the very nice Vargas family. Esteban is the main guy but the entire family is involved as well. The family is extremely sweet and they speak English very well.

The rooms are very clean. There is no AC or heating but they provide many blankets to keep you warm. The water pressure is light in the bathroom so shower quickly so you don't get cold! The room basically has the bare essentials and is very clean. No frills here. There is no phone, TV, or alarm clock in the room. There is a computer (on dial up internet!) that guests can use in the main house.

The breakfast is simple and healthy. You can choose from eggs, pancakes, toast, fresh fruit, and granola. All of the food is very fresh.

Esteban was very helpful and patient with us on helping us book activities to do. The location of the B&B is VERY close to the rain forest so it's in a more "rural" area, a much further walk to restaurants and nearby stores. You can walk it but carry a flashlight since it's dark at night. At night, the B&B is very quiet and peaceful. There is more lively action in nearby Santa Elena (20 min walk or 5 min drive).

The only tough thing about this place is making a reservation and finding the place. To make a reservation, you need to email them. If you search on the Trip Advisor forums, the email address is listed in it. To find the place, you can email them for directions but don't expect street names or an address! The drive is pretty intense... all on unpaved roads and an incline. The directions you will be given will list landmarks to look for since there is a lack of street names, but it's very obvious on what to look for. If you are still not sure, search for Hotel Fonda Vela and they are a more well known hotel that is right next to Mariposa.

Overall I felt very safe here. Monteverde itself feels like a very safe place with a hospitable culture. It's not over the top touristy either. Enjoy!!!

My wife and I drove straight to the Mariposa B & B after our red eye flight into San Jose. My wife lived in Monteverde 9 years ago and the landscape had changed greatly with many new hotels, homes and development. At the Mariposa, it's evident the culture of Costa Rica and Monteverde is still alive. Our hosts were patient with our broken spanish and helped ease our transition from our busy working lives in the states to our relaxed belated honeymoon. Esteban, son of the owner, is fully bilingual and took the time to explain directions and sites in both english and spanish. The room was perfect for our needs, sleeping, enjoying a cup of coffee, writing, reading, and viewing some local wildlife. The hotel was slightly overpriced by about $10-$15 for what we received. Nevertheless, I still recommend this great spot for Monteverde.
