My new husband and I just returned from our 12 day honeymoon in Costa Rica. We wanted to pack in as much adventure as possible so we spent a lot of time researching adventure companies online. We came across Vista Golfo Adventure Park on tripadvisor and he fell in love with the idea of zip lines over waterfalls, something we didn't find anywhere else. When we brought it up to the travel agent, he informed us that Vista Golfo caters to cruise ships so it's very crowded and not the authentic Costa Rican experience we were looking for. He also said the drive was too far out of our way (we rented a car for the trip and were traveling from Tamarindo to Monte Verde). However, after reading the reviews on tripadvisor we decided to go for it anyway. When we told the travel agent of this decision, he admitted he had never actually been there and asked us to report back and let him know how it was!
Were there cruise ship customers there? Yes, there were, but we made reservations in advance and it was no more or less crowded than any other excursion company we visited. We had a great time talking to other travelers and hearing of their experiences regardless of how they got there.
Was it a long drive? I guess that depends on how you define "long drive". We made it from the Tamarindo area in under 2 hours, which was much less time than we expected. We saw some beautiful scenery along the way and quite enjoyed the trip. The very last part of the drive is a little scary, up a mountain on a dirt road, but if you drive around Costa Rica for very long you realize a lot of the roads are like that. Look at it as an adventure!
Was it worth it? Absolutely. Before our trip was over we did zip lines at Adventure Golfo, in Monte Verde, and in Arenal. It would be impossible for me to say that one was better than the others because they were all very different. What AG offers that no one else has it the waterfalls. You're actually in the forest instead of above it and it's beautiful. Also, because you're not above the canopy it doesn't feel like you are as high as the zip lines in other areas. You probably won't notice this if heights don't bother you but it's a bonus if heights make you nervous. I also felt like I experienced the forest more this way, instead of looking down on a canopy of green. We saw giant butterflies, very interesting lizards, and heard monkeys howling. There is a break along the way where you can swim in a pool at the bottom of a waterfall. We took the "4x4 car" to the starting point and that was an adventure in itself! The ride is quite bumpy but fun and again, beautiful. And, on top of all of that, the view from the lodge is breathtaking and the lunch provided is really good! We saw howler monkeys in the trees while we were eating lunch, another added bonus.
So, overall, I would definitely recommend Adventure Golfo to anyone looking for, well, and adventure! We're definitely glad we made the trip!
