“Beyond our expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW

Arenal del Mar was gift as we found ourselves to in the midst of such beauty and attentiveness. From the moment we arrived to our final moments we were cared for. The staff is amazing. it is hard to mention one person ...everyone was so hospitable. We had a partial ocean view, 303b and lovely. We availed ourselves to the Spa and so pleased.
So fun to make Tortillas and view the property. So admire Arenas for its respect of the environment ...they not only care for their guests but care for their staff and the environs.

We are grateful to them for this incredible experience.

Room Tip: Recommend a room with a view of the ocean or partial view. We loved being close to the pool and the...

Fell in love with Costa Rica during our recent trip; Arenas del Mar was the best from the moment we arrived until the day we left. We spent three nights there...wished we could have stayed more. The staff were amazing; we always felt like we were the only guest they were taking care of. The grounds were gorgeous and our room was terrific with a terrific view. If, no not if, when we go back to Costa Rica we will make sure to include Arenas del Mar on the trip. Go Baby Sloth!

Room Tip: go for a top floor!

Green Features: We felt that they did all they could to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Loved that no cars were allowed in the main area of the property. they had golf carts to get you where ever you needed to be.

This hotel is given great reviews by consumers and has an excellent review in Frommer's 2015 Guide to Costa Rica but we were frankly disappointed. We had a superior room on the third (top) floor of one of their many buildings. While we had a great view of the Pacific nothing else deserved the rave reviews. The room was quite cramped. Being on the beach is an advantage as well as a disadvantage because golf carts and then taxis are required to go anywhere else in the area. There are two rooms on each floor and we understand these other rooms have larger quarters. They boast a free mini-bar but it contained fruit juice and Costa Rican snacks suitable for kids.

The common spaces are well appointed with great views of the ocean. We can only presume that the accommodations are superior to other hotels along this stretch of coast. However, compared to the other hotels in which we stayed the Arenas del Mar hotel paled in comparison in many respects. Seriously, the rooms need some updating. There is much wildlife on the property and capuchin monkeys are frequently seen.

On the positive side, breakfast was great. I would highly recommend the french toast unequivocally. Thick slices of brioche topped with cashews and fresh blackberries. Yummy.

There is free long distance calling which is a nice benefit.

The biggest disappointment was the staff. Most are friendly but less so than we found in other parts of CR. For example, we scheduled reservations for a romantic dinner on the beach one night (it is only offered on certain nights). It was cancelled for fear of rough weather which never materialized but there was no courtesy phone call and no apology. We promptly went elsewhere for dinner. It may be that staffing is more difficult in this part of Costa Rica. Manuel Antonio appears have a more touristy attitude/vibe that I associate with other parts of the Americas, in other words, it feels a lot like Mexico.

We did enjoy a nice lunch on the beach on another day although I felt the prices were a bit steep.

Room Tip: Ask for the larger suites

Dear David,
thank you very much for taking the time to let us know about the pitfalls of your stay with us. First of all, we would like to sincerely apologize that we did not fulfill your expectations. We aim to make sure that all of our guests have extraordinary experiences at our hotel. Thank you for pointing out some of the positive aspects of your stay with us as well such as the setting, the wildlife, the free international calls and of course breakfast. What we are most concerned about is your comment about our staff. We are very sorry that your dinner at the beach did not happen and that we did not communicate the situation with you correctly. Please do not interpret this situation as a lack of service culture or indifference on our part. Since we work with members of the local community as our staff, sometimes their communication skills in the English Language are not at 100% and misunderstandings happen. But that is not an excuse and we take 100% responsibility for this situation. Thanks again for your feedback. We take it very seriously and it will help us improve our operation and serve guests better in the future. Saludos and all the best.

Beautiful property. Very attentive staff. Excellent restaurant! Nice beach.

It does have that compound feel. Some rooms are not as private as others. Families are welcome... That can be a positive or a negative, depending on your status. Relying on golf carts for mobility can convey a captive feeling.

Room Tip: Avoid ground floor units near the pools.

There is no way I can put all of our feelings into this post. The property, the staff (speifically Angel at the restaurant), the rooms, the wildlife were all amazing. We couldn`t have been more impressed. We made 3 stops in 8 days an this was by far our favorite part of the trip. This is the only place to stay in Quepos.

This is a really lovely resort. Helpful, friendly staff. Two small swimming pools, two beautiful beaches. The ocean view suites have amazing views and are really spacious and nicely furnished with great terraces.

Really convenient for Manuel Antonio NP although we saw Capuchin monkeys and sloths within the hotel grounds.

My husband and I stayed here several years ago and this time brought our 2 young boys, 4 and 7.
Beautiful property with helpful, knowledgeable, very friendly staff. The rooms are well air conditioned the beds are super comfortable and the beach views...spectacular! We saw more animals around the property than we did on our visit to the National Park.
Our whole family had an excellent experience we will treasure for a lifetime.
