“Fantastic ocean view, chill people, but must take bus everywhere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2009

When you arrive, the first thing that strikes you is that the common porch full of hammocks and relaxed visitors put you in a different state of mind. We took a 3.5 hr bus ride from San Jose and the bus dropped us off right in front of Vista Serena.
The view from the common porch is a relaxing view of the pacific ocean and inside is a shared living room/kitchen with 2 free internet computers.
We booked a semi private room which consisted of a shared living room, bathroom and kitchen with private locking bedrooms. We also share a porch (another awesome ocean view) with one other double room.
Location was pretty much the only shortcoming for this hostel. There is a few restaurants and a supermarket within walking distance, but the park and the beach are a bus ride away. Vista Serena is about equidistant from both Quepos and Manual Antonio. It is a 5 minute walk to the closest bus station and you will rarely have to wait longer than 20 minutes for a bus.
A quick note about the and transportation: Since there is only a single road between Quepos and Manual Antonio, taxi's are always readily available (look for the little red cars, but the drivers will often honk, wave them down if you want a ride) but will always be more expensive than the bus.
Another concern is the late night noise, but that is to be expected from crowds of this age group.
We would recommend this place for the college and post college group, but not recommended for families with kids.

When they say this is geared towards young people, they are absolutely not kidding. If you want to hang out and have fun with a bunch of amazing people from all over the world, this is the place for you. I will never forget the people I met there, or the owners, as they were absolutely amazing! By far he best weekend I had in Costa Rica.

This place is the BEST hostel ever...The coolest, most diverse group of people came through here for the 3 days that I was here, we cooked, danced, drank wine and Guaro...always music playing and always something to do, even if it's nothing...the owners (2 brothers Alex and Conrad) are awesome....My experience here was the best of Costa Rica...I didn't want to leave....

I stayed in one of the shared apartments (private room, shared bathroom, kitchen and living room area with one other room). I'm not sure about the dorm rooms, but the apt. was nice. The sunset view was spectacular. There is a great common space full of hammocks. Has wi-fi. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Located on the road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio but within walking distance of a supermarket and a few restaurants. You can take the bus easily to either of the two towns (and the park).

We really loved our stay in Vista Serena. The owners were very friendly and helpful with suggesting activities and making bookings. The hostel is well-maintained and very clean. The hammocks are great for getting a view of the sunset over the ocean and for hanging out at night. The private room in a shared cabin was really nice. I saw some reviews about robberies before booking, but did not experience this or hear about anyone else who did while there. The only bad thing was the snorkel trip they suggested, which was a huge waste of money (just a tip, not at all the hostel's fault).

I stayed here for 2 nights in July. It is fantastic! The owners are extremely helpful and keep the place spotless. I had heard about recent thefts there, and was advised to use the locker and did so, just like at every hostel I stay at.

The porch has an unparalleled view and great hammocks. The porch is condusive to meeting others and wonderful conversations. The owners love striking the BBQ, too! This has been one of my faves on this trip!

It is not near the National Park, but none of the hostels are. You need to take a bus there, for only a few cents. There are bars and restaurants nearby and the hostel has a great kitchen!

First up, the view and the balcony was pretty cool. Getting robbed of all my cash ($600)only minutes before I left the place wasn't so cool. Days later I heard from people I met there that they also got robbed. The locals explained that it was nothing unusual at Vista Serena. Watch your cash, electronics and clothing!
