“No frills and reasonably priced; great sunset views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

In a pricey area Vista Serena is good value for money. Bathrooms could use an update, ventilation was a headache in our cabin. Sunset views are gorgeous from all terraces/balconies. For very young travellers this is a great place to meat people.

Clean hostel, great atmosphere. Good price, and breakfast is included. There is a nice restaurant on location. The view from the common area/balcony is amazing, especially at sunset. I stayed in an 18-bed room, and had no issues whatsoever. I've read some reviews regarding the long walk to the beach - just take the bus. The bus stop is only 150 meters or so up the hill from the hostel, and it's a cheap fare.

Room Tip: As with many other hostels, there are different types of rooms, some ranging from 4 beds to a room t...

At first, try calling. Conrad is nice and helpful but replying to emails with precise answers is not one of his skills.
The view was gorgeous as promised, the kitchen is tiny and poorly equipped for so many people. The restaurant and offered food looked nice though. The chill-out area is way to small for the people hanging around and it was not a relaxed atmosphere at all. The dorm room was average with 18 beds in a dark room and the road close by.

I stayed here two nights. The staff was very helpful with the recommendations. Conrad even helped me to have my flat tyre repaired. The view and the restaurant are great. There is free breakfast with coffee, bread and jam. The common area was clean. The hammock was nice to relax given the view. The only cons were the noisy ACs in the room, shared bathroom with other dorm rooms and the 30 min hike to the beach.

We arrived at approximately 10pm and only the security guard was on duty. He had no access to reservations, room keys to check us in, or owners phone number. With great effort we managed to track down a phone number for the owner and he came to check us in very quickly which was a great relief. The owner treated us very well even though we had woken him up late at night, he answered all of our questions and even allowed us to buy a few beers. He made us feel very welcome and did not rush us at all. We stayed in a 4 bed dorm which was a bit cramped but clean and livable. There was only one bathroom for 3 dorm rooms. We did not experience any issues with this however if for some reason everyone was attempting to get ready to go to the park in the morning at the same time this might be an issue. There was a fan in our room and the only issue you might have is the fan only really works in the hot room if you are sleeping on the top bunk. If you are in the bottom bunk you will not likely have any air flow in the hot nights. The hostel is quiet and we had no issues with loud noises or partying late at night. The hostel has a place to eat on site and the food is good with decent prices. The common area has a beautiful view of the area and ocean. Breakfast is a light toast and jam but there are markets nearby, a full kitchen on site and the restaurant.

I don't know where to begin!

We stayed at Vista Serena for 3 nights in the semi-private room which was more like an apartment! It had a common area and a kitchen with locking doors. We had problems with little ants the first night but the next day we saw that they sprayed the outside and it was no longer an issue. I wouldn't strongly recommend the rooms that are in the common area as it would be very loud, however I imagine they would be much cheaper than the privates.

The common area was very welcoming and it was easy to meet new people (also the only place you could get wifi). I never had the food at their restaurant (only open in the evening) but I heard it was delicious. The views from the hostel are amazing! Best sunsets in town, I'm sure.

It is a distance from the beach but the bus system is super easy to use, we just walked to a stop about 500m north of the hostel. It is about 300 colones (0.50 cents). There are two supermarkets within 500m as well. If you get the chance to go to Sanchos next to the bus stop you will not regret it!! BEST fish tacos I have ever had.

What really made this place a 5 star was the service. Conrad, the owner, is the man! He was SO SO helpful and nice. We asked him so many questions about transportation, activities, the park, etc and he was delighted to help. He goes above and beyond!!

Overall, amazing stay. We were sad to leave! Until next time.

This December my groupmates and me decided to travel around Costa Rica and we stayed in Vista Serena hostel. And these five days have changed my life :)
This is the most comfortable hostel I've ever been to. Amazing sunset view every day. Friendly people, delicious food. This is a real paradise. Very helpful and responsible host - Conrad.
Also we became a part of an annual 10k marathon through the jungle. Thanks for Vista Serena Crew for it :)
Hostel has a very convenient location - markets, shops, bars and a bus stop - everything is in 3 min walk distance.
