“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2014

The hotel is nice but you should not expect a first class hotel. The hotel is located in walking distance to the harbour and the village but I would not like to do the walk in the night. The staff of the hotel s very friendly and you can feel the family spirit everywhere. Our room had a nice view but still you could not really see a lot of the sea. Unfortunately there is a sports hall next to the hotel (can be seen on the picture of the roolm) where local kids play different sorts of sport and do a lot of noise.
The bathroom of our room was in need of renovation. The hotel owner assured us that he already started with renovating bath rooms but could do it only step by step. Therefore some rooms already have a modern bathroom others not.
The pool area has a little waterfall but did not really attract us to stay there longer. The same seemed to be true for the other guests because we could not see anybody at the pool area. Breakfast was okay. We enjoyed especailly the pancake breakfast but you could also have something different.

overall we had a nice stay, but some things were not as their web site suggests.
we stayed at the canopy room - it's a nice room, but the view was less stunning than I had anticipated by the steep climb up. and don't be fooled - it is a very very steep climb! they were nice to help us with our luggage otherwise there is no way we would have gotten our suitcases up there. also - the wifi in the room doesn't work (even though the web site says it does) and they will not serve breakfast on the room patio - rather on the patio by the pool. otherwise, the room was clean, the air conditioner works well, and the shower has great water pressure. the place itself is nice, the pool has a little waterfall into it, and the breakfast was small but tasty. also, the people who run it are really sweet, including their kids and the intern who is there helping out.
the other thing we wanted to mention is that there is no safe in the room! this wouldn't have normally bothered me so much except that on arrival they make you sign a waiver that they are not responsible for stolen property from the room… seemed a little strange. they offered that we leave passports and money in their office safe, but the office was frequently closed so it wasn't easy to get things in or out, and the safe couldn't fit our laptops so that wasn't useful at all.

Thanks for staying with us , We appreciate your constructive criticism. All guests are informed about the challenging access to the Dome and Canopy suites. They are not for everyone , but most people looking for an adventure LOVE IT . Several times a week you will have monkeys swinging from your balcony and dancing on the roof. For most this makes it all worth while.
Having internet up there seems to depend on what hardware you have , but we have excellent connection around the pool .

We just recently got back from our 5 night stay in Costa Rica and I have to say that everything about Las Cascades seemed average except for the wonderful family and their service. We stayed here at the end of our vacation and spent two nights in one of the canopy rooms at the top of the property. A few ants in our room including a gecko didn't bother us, I mean, what would one expect from Costa Rica, but the resort seemed a bit "worn" and we noticed that there wasn't much attention to the details.

For example, we were given the canopy room with the balcony and decided to sit outside one night to read, but could hardly see as there was only 1 lightbulb in the fixture. There was no safe in our room, and the coffee in the fridge in our room was simply in a closed glass container, so who knows how long that was there. Also, my husband remarked that it seems a bit silly that the name of the hotel is Las Cascades "the cascades/waterfalls" but their waterfall running through the majority of the resort wasn't even working. Also, the internet did not work anywhere near our rooms, so we had to come down to the pool from our canopy room, which was not an easy feat, just to use our phone/ipad. I mean, these are only small examples, but when you're paying $120 a night, you really notice the details that are overlooked.

The breakfast was very good, but I'm not sure it was worth the price, and the owner helped us with making arrangements for a tour and offering advice on what to do on our stay, which was VERY helpful.

Overall, I would say our stay was average, but the place needs some updating. I didn't mind the town of Quapos, actually one of our favorite restaurants in all of Costa Rica was within walking distance, and I didn't feel unsafe by the houses we had to walk/drive through to get to the hotel. They seemed like typical Costa Rican homes.

If you book one of the canopy rooms, just be prepared for a trek up some sleep slopes, and don't expect an ocean view. :(

We recently stayed for a week at this wonderful place and immediately fell in love with the room, view, the people, and the location. Gary, his family, and staff made our experience more than we could have imagined. They not only have a beautiful place - close to town - but far enough away to be able to enjoy the culture and natural beauty of the area. They were also extremely helpful in booking any and all of the activities that we wanted.
Thank you all at Las Cascades

Our opinion of Las Cascadas was dampened before we arrived. Their reservation policy is to charge 50% at the time of booking and the other 50% 15 days before arrival. This is the only accomodation in Costa Rica that made me pay for the entire stay before we got there. I'm sure this isn't entirely uncommon - particularly for high season at a larger property, but still bothersome. We were staying 2 nights at $120/night. They charged my credit card $120 when I booked and were supposed to charge the other $120 15 days prior. Surprise! They charged me $240 15 days prior! It could have been an honest mistake - I emailed the hotel and got a response the next day saying they would credit it. 6 days later I had not seen the credit yet so I was forced to send a follow up email. The following day I got another response stating they had sent it to the bank (I have a feeling they didn't issue the credit until the 2nd email). I finally received the credit 2 weeks after they charged it.

Throughout the stay we found the service to be sub par. The front desk seems to be run by short term interns who, while friendly, don't have the knowledge needed to do a great job. The breakfast is a bit of a joke - if they want to charge for it they really need to increase their level of service. To be fair, there was a power outage but the indifference from staff only increased the aggravation. Another day we met a taxi early before they had opened the gate - only to find that we couldn't get in or out. None of the keys worked. I tried, my girlfriend tried, the taxi driver tried.. the gal at the front desk tried, all to no avail. We never did figure out if they worked or not. Thank goodness we were only trying to leave early, not come back late. They were helpful, however when we booked our single tour in the area.

The location of Las Cascadas is rather.. unique. It is found past a residential neighborhood and you have to travel through a very narrow street with houses on either side where you're basically looking into tico living rooms. It was a little unnerving as we werent sure of the safety of this neighborhood, but we had no problems. We were on foot for our trip so it was a little out of the way - but it looked like many people had rental cars which would make it much easier. The property is on a hill so it is a little bit of a hike down to Quepos. If you want to get a meal in town give yourself time for the walk or call a taxi. We walked back and forth after dark without issues but you'll have to decide for yourself if you feel safe. To get to Manuel Antonio you'll need to take a $10 cab or the public bus.

We stayed in the Canopy Suite which is tucked into the side of a very steep hill. We had specifically booked the room with the terrace but were notified that the owner's son had given our room away the night before. This wasn't a huge deal but worth mentioning. They did offer to let us switch the following day but we were already settled in and didn't want to pack all our stuff so they could move it while we were out. The hotel was very good about warning us before we booked that the hike up is strenuous - and it is. It is also a little quieter and the view from the room is great. For the price of the room we expected better housekeeping. There were cobwebs in the curtains and the floors were dirty. It is the rainforest so we can coexist with bugs, but it was easy to notice the lack of care. On the plus side, the room was very spacious and had a huge bathroom and shower. The bed was very good.

All in all, we were disappointed in the level of service more than anything else. Make sure that the out of the way location is what you want. I believe the Trip Advisor reviews on this hotel are skewed.. I'm willing to bet there are plenty of better options.

Thank you for your candid review , As you said in your review it is very common for a hotel to take full charge of the room when you reserve . I just came back from a 3 week trip to Europe and all my rooms were paid for in advance . We are actually quite liberal in our policies here.
Re the key incident >
Some times when you cut a new key they do not always work and I believe that was the case in your situation .
Regarding the power outage at breakfast time . There are things that are out of our control , a power outage being one of them . The look on our face that you interpreted as indifferance was really more like [ OHH NO what are we going to do now with a full restaurant . } Most power outages here don[t last more than 5 or 10 min , as was the case here , but it is un nerving when they happen at the beginning of breakfast.
We do have very high standards for cleaning as you will see in most of our reviews. Once in awhile an employee will take short cuts. Those employees don[t usually last long here and the housekeeping personel that we had when you were here no longer work here .
Thanks again for your review and helping make us better.

We stayed with these folks for 5 nights. it is a nice base for operations in the Quepos area and away from the crowds as you get closer to Manuel Antonion. It is within walking distance of the town and the harbor which is a plus. The kind staff will gladly recommend and schedule tours for you. it is clean with good facilities. The AC in our unit was a little loud and not very powerful. Although we had the unit for four people, there was no table for four to eat inside. We could use the barbecue outside but they ran out of propane and it would take at least a day to get it replaced. The pool with the waterfall cascades is lovely and a real attraction. However the pool is small and there is only room for about 8 to 10 people in the pool area. There are so many things to see and do that the pool capacity was never a problem. Overall we liked the place and enjoyed our visit. The owners are attentive and respond to your questions and concerns.

Room Tip: If you want to so your own cooking, you have to pay a little more and get one of the units with a ki...

Stayed here with a group of people. Big diff between which "condo" you get. Owner tries hard to make them all modern and very nice.

Bugs, especially the little ants, are a problem in any beach/rural area in CR. I've been there too many times to count. I see them in the finest places. I always bring a can of Raid, spray around the doors and windows, under the sink, etc (not the counter-tops obviously), helps. Really can't control it totally.

Nor the barking dogs--a rampant problem in CR if you are going to stay in a Quepos neighborhood, like this, and not a hotel strip area. Barking all night at a distance at Las Cascadas.

Convenient location if Quepos is your thing, some people think it is a dump--I like it, especially if you're there for fishing--the marina is really close, it'll save you 30-40 minutes at 5am and that is sweet. If the beach is your thing, stay in Manuel Antonio.

It's high priced, many of the "condos" right up there with the elegant ManuelAntonio 5 star hotels.

Room Tip: Let them give you a tour to see what's available. I didn't see them all but none that I did...
