“One of those little Gems”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2006

I spent two nights at La Posada in Mid December. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, and I would recommend it to anyone who travels to Manuel Antonio (Especially if you plan to visit the park, which is literally right next door to the hotel.)

La Posada is not a resort. It is not a luxury destination, and it does not feature one of those, million dollar, Manuel Antonio views. It is a small hotel located somewhat off the beaten path (at the end of a small gravel side street. away from the beach and nightlife).

However, what it may lack in pedigree, La Posada more than makes up for in personality, service, and atmosphere.

The combination of great prices, attractive, comfortable, and very clean rooms, with fun and friendly ownership and staff, make this hotel a real gem. It is a great base of operations for anyone touring the Manuel Antonio area.

  • Liked — Great ownership and staff. Very friendly and helpful.

My wife and I stayed at La Posada in December during our 10th anniversary trip to Costa Rica. It was awesome. My wife is a neat freak and she was even impressed with how clean the rooms were. We stayed in the parrot bungalow.

The welcome packet detailed recommendations in plain English for everything from dining to ATMs to nightlife and tours. The staff (Johnathan, Elvis, Carol, and Francini) were extremely friendly and helpful. All of the services were reasonably priced. They don’t gouge you for drinks, laundry, lunch, etc.

The location is amazing. Walking distance to two beaches, the park entrance, and many restaurants. The proximity to the park makes for wildlife visits. We were there three nights and had multiple visits from a dozen squirrel monkey, deer, and lizards.

It is a very relaxed atmosphere with a dining area for breakfast. The pizzas in the afternoon are fantastic. The bungalows are comfortable and clean, but what really puts this place so far above the others is the service. From the owner down, they made a huge difference in how much we enjoyed our stay. They are committed to doing whatever they need to do to help you have a great trip, not merely provide you a bed in which to sleep.

Thanks again, La Posada. We will certainly stay here again next time we’re in Costa Rica.

  • Liked — The people that work there.
  • Disliked — none
  • Tips/Secrets — The pizza is awesome. Arrange a guide for NP through la posada. Go on a canopy tour.

First time to Costa Rica. The staff was unbelievable. The bungalows were so clean and very roomy. Don't be afraid to drink the water. The water was clean and VERY good. Breakfast was served every morning and delicious. The owner was very involved with our visit. Fantastic host. Monkey's and other wildlife visited our private paradise. Can't wait to go back for a slice of heaven. Thank you La Posada Private Jungle Bungalows team for our wonderful stay.

  • Liked — clean, great food and fantastic hotel host!
  • Disliked — none I can think of!

My wife, our 2 year old daughter, and myself visited Manuel Antonio and stayed at La Posada from 11/25 - 11/29. I booked this hotel strictly based off of the glowing reviews I read here. All I can say is it was the best vacation decision of my life. Not even Clark Griswald could mess this one up ;-).

Mike, the owner, treats his guest in a manner in which you feel like family. The hotel grounds are immaculate, the staff is attentive and friendly, you get served a wonderful Tico breakfast every morning and the property is right next to the beach and park.

Mike helped us with whatever we needed whether it was restaurant recommendations or what tours are the best in the area. The second part of our stay in Manuel Antonio we stayed at a "fancier" hotel up on the hill that had the postcard view of the ocean. It was nice but nothing compared to our stay at La Posada.

I can't recommend La Posada highly enough. Book it if you are in the Manuel Antonio area and you will not be disappointed.

This is a great place to stay in Manuel Antonio. You are a 3 minute walk to the beach, and a 4 minute walk to the park entrance. The bungolows are great, we stayed in the LaPosada room and had a large room with a small kitchen, even a walk in closet. The pool area is beautiful, you are right next to the park so you are surrounded by jungle and wildlife. There are several restaurants in the area you can walk to, I can't think of a better place to stay. The owner Mike is very personable and welcoming, even taking people staying there to one of his favorite dining or entertainment venues.

My wife and I are transplanted New Orleanians teaching in Costa Rica. For Thanksgiving, with visiting in-laws and an uncle in tow, we shopped online for a place that could handle the five of us in one space. La Posada's owner, Mike (a U.S. expat who came to Costa Rica and never left), had just recently moved out of his onsite apartment for the express purpose of accommodating groups such as ours.

For $150 a night (off season, high season goes to $225) we enjoyed a spotless two bedroom, two full bath (with good water pressure and plenty of hot water) apartment with an enormous living area complete with two couches, two foutons, a 55-inch TV and a full kitchen. Then there was the screened in porch from which we spotted any number of birds, deer, coatimundi (sp?), and, of course, monkeys from the national park that borders the property. And, oh yeah, that included five breakfasts daily.

We joked with Mike that we suspected he wrote his own TripAdvisor reviews; now we can vouch for the place personally. A short walk gets you to the beach or the park, and the staff is remarkably friendly and helpful with recommendations for area dining and attractions. If you're not up to venturing out for dinner, do like we did one night and stay in for the hotel's homemade pizzas.

We never even ventured into the private jungle bungalows, so we can't vouch for those. But the apartment is a great value.

A final note: Mike had accidentally booked us at high season rates. We didn't even think to question, figuring that our three-night stay over the Thanksgiving weekend, though technically still the rainy season, must have merited the bump in price. Mike volunteered his mistake upon our arrival, putting $225 back in our pockets that we never would have missed otherwise.

We love La Posada so much we are already looking forward to returning. We cancelled our Arenal portion to stay there longer! The hotel is nice and small, with the Tico staff making it authentic. They are so eager to serve and please; they even straightened our bathroom items and folded our dirty laundry! Breakfast was delicious and we looked forward to it evey morning (except the coffee). Carol and Francini are incredible, as is Mike. He took us out with some other guests one night, and would frequently converse with us about different things. It felt like we were guests of honor, and the location of the hotel is unmatched as the best in MA Park. The new 2/2 apt upstairs is the cat's meow! It is great.
Hotels may advertise as beachfront, but none really are. They are oceanfront and you have to walk to the beach. Well, Posada is among the closest of walks, but its right next to the park/ rainforest so you often see wildlife right there on property. We saw monkeys, deer, and giant iguanas throughout our stay there.
If you want non-corporate, clean, safe, affordable, and personal, this is it! No complaints; pura vida!

  • Liked — the staff
  • Disliked — Hot tub wasn't hot.
  • Tips/Secrets — bring cash and Visa; no Mastercard in most of the area!
