“A Beautiful Spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

Mango Moon is a charming "botique" hotel located very conveniently near Manual Antonio National Park and the coastal town of Quepos. The breakfasts were lovely on the patio overlooking a beautiful bay. Don't miss an evening of live music and the yummy tapas menu if it is scheduled during your stay. There is a lovely small pool for sunning, relaxation, reading, or enjoying a nice cool-off. The front desk arranged a wonderful guide (Freddie) for a tour of Manual Antonio; we would not have seen the park's bird, insect, reptile, and wildlife had it not been for our excellent spotter. I highly recommend the Mango Moon if you have a car. Without a car, it would be quite a hilly walk to/from the beach, although possible.

Room Tip: Book a room on the terrace/ocean side if you can afford it.

This was a return visit for us. My husband and I stayed at the Mango Moon 7 years ago and fell in love with the place. We were excited to return with our extended family. For the most part, we were not disappointed.

Our family of four stayed in the Gecko Suite. We should have asked more questions about the second room. It was located over the front door and our two adult children heard people being buzzed into the hotel late at night. My stepdaughter had difficulty sleeping on the day bed mattress. I would appreciate it if they would put a shower caddy in the shower. Our soap and shampoo had to sit on the floor.

Our relatives stayed in the Howler Hangout. Though a nice big room, their air conditioner did not work 3 out of 5 nights. The heat and humidity was insufferable, making sleep for them nearly impossible.

That being said, there were a lot of positives. Donna and her staff were most accommodating. They arranged transport to and from San Jose and one of our tours. Our meals were tasty. New this time was lunch and dinner being served. That was a plus if you didn't want to walk up the hill to another spot.

The monkeys were fabulous. We saw capuchin and howler monkeys. The last morning there was a tribe of 15 to 20 howler monkeys that spent about 5 hours frolicking in the trees for our visual pleasure. We were sorry the squirrel monkeys did not make an appearance as they were our favorite on our last visit.

The view is stupendous. This time we hiked down to the beach to view the prehistoric turtle traps Donna told us about. It is worth the hike--pretty beach, very little people.

We would recommend Iquana tours, the Hotel Mariposa for a sunset dinner and cocktails, Cafe Milagro, and Victoria's.

This is not the most luxurious hotel, but if you want to see native wildlife in their natural habitat, this is the place for you.

The hotel has a very attractive look, the staff are really good friendly people they made all the difference. The food menu needs to be broader as it’s limited. The drinks were really good, lots of fresh juices; don't be afraid to try the Cacique the local liquor it’s a blast! The room had a great view of the ocean and the pool, it was kept clean and the hotel felt good and safe.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room.

The hotel is rustic, small and a little run down, but it offers an incredible view of the Pacific and it's conveniently located within walking distance of restaurants, bars and the bus stop. We loved the fact that it was in the direct path of a pack of White-throated Capucin monkeys that made their way through the connecting mango trees up and down the hill every morning and afternoon. From our balcony we enjoyed magnificent sunsets, a variety of birds and were visited by the tiny Squirrel Monkeys. All in all it was a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Toucan Terrace is on the second floor and has a great view of the Pacific.

My husband and I stayed at the Mango Moon in early March. We loved the warm tropical character of the place. Unlike the upscale resorts/hotels that we find to be a bit sterile and predictable, the Moon was warm and inviting and had that exotic feel that enjoy so much. It was still very comfortable and luxurious but in a laid back, intimate way. The pool and dining/bar areas are lovely and the views are amazing from there as well as most of the rooms. There is also trail that takes you to a private beach, which is not typical of the other hotels.

They also did a great job in the kitchen as well as the bar and everyone who works there is exceptionally friendly, including Donna, the owner.

The best part for us however was the abundance of wildlife that runs thru that property. We literally saw more wildlife at the Moon than we did in the actual park. Every day, and several times a day there were troops of monkeys, exotic birds, sloths and more. We started to realize that rather than trying to go find the critters, if you sit in one place long enough they will come find you, and that as it turns out was the perfect place.

Room Tip: Some rooms are best for bird watching, others monkeys and some simply views. Decide what's most...

Our family just returned from a week stay at Mango Moon. We Loved it! MM was very casual and laid back giving it a homey feel. It is not a posh, upscale resort with room service, all inclusive, etc. IT IS a warm, friendly place with courteous staff, good food, clean accommodations, great views, walk to beaches and restaurants. It was our kinda place! Thank you Donna, Arlyne, Jerilyn, etc for a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Sloth Shanty and it was perfect for 4 people!

My family loved our visit to Mango Moon. The view is outstanding. The atmosphere is quaint. The pace is relaxing. The rooms are comfortable. The food is good. The staff is friendly and helpful.

The co-owner, Donna, adds an extra dimension. She is a rock chick, married to the base player for the band Creed, although I gather that they are not so much together anymore except for the fact that he is still the co-owner of the hotel. She sort of shocked my senses when I first met her because she has tattoos running all the way down one arm and has tanned herself to ultra-dark -- which is not the look you normally see when you first check into a hotel.

Donna is ever-present in making sure that things are running well and that the guests are comfortable. Thus, we had a lot of chance to chat with her and I was really fascinated by the interesting life journey that led her to Mango Moon but also by the sweet and cool person that she is today. She is also part of the beautiful scenery you get when you stay there because she is a stylish mix of conventional pretty and good girl gone wild. Her caring management and unique presence play a major role in making Mango Moon such a charming place to stay.
