“Beautiful 4 day stay at the Makanda”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago NEW

Finished off our CR trip in Manuel Antonio at the Makanda by the Sea resort. This hotel was perfect for our needs (huge room, great food, helpful staff), close to all attractions and great luxury. Despite a small mixup at check in, Makanda was highly professional in all aspects and extremely helpful. Tip: if hiking to the beach below the property, take water shoes bc beach is very rocky, and prepare for a 20 minute hike in rugged terrain

This is an adult only hotel with rooms which feel isolated (even though they're not), with an intimate atmosphere and beautiful views to the ocean. The standard of housekeeping was excellent and unobtrusive. Breakfast was served to your room which was a bit quirky and different but much appreciated - personal preference would be to go to a dining room though as our balcony was very small and so we ate in our room.
The slight downside for us was the menu selection at the dining area around the pool, it was restricted and consequently we chose to eat out for our two out of three evening meals.
An absolute plus were the reception staff, Darwin and Natalia, they were friendly, extremely helpful and very professional, a real asset to the hotel.

We had 6 nights here at the end of a busy holiday itinerary and we loved it. Our studio (number 4) had lovely sea views and had pretty much everything we needed. The balcony was a little small, but plenty big enough for us to sit our and enjoy the view. The resort is spread amongst the trees and we found it difficult to judge how big it actually was - a plus point as far as we were concerned.

We spend most afternoons lazing by the infinity pool which has good sea views and is pretty good for wildlife too - we spotted Sloth, Toucan, Frigate, Kite, Turkey Vulture and loads of smaller birds we didn't have on our list. There is constant lounge style chill out music piped around the pool area which we actually quite liked, but there are those who might not appreciate it. I think the hotel could consider whether to play the music from 7:00AM till well into the evening - perhaps just doing it during the afternoon might be more appropriate.

The staff we all very helpful from the guy at the gate, the bar and restaurant staff, the cleaners, reception - all exemplified the Costa Rican service culture.

We didn't eat in the restaurant, preferring to try out the local restaurants. Breakfast is served in your room which we really enjoyed above the normal buffet breakfasts at other hotels.

There is a small beach about 10 minutes walk down through the woods - great for an early morning dip or you can walk to the beach that runs into Manuel Antonio National Park in 20 mins or so (taxi back because it's quite steep and can be very warm later in the day!!)

This is an adult only hotel, we loved it.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view!

This was our last stop, three weeks in to exploring Costa Rica. Admittedly, we had just travelled from a simple, beautiful and tranquil Eco lodge, but we felt that we were in a different country. Makanda by the Sea is very smart and chic and not our taste at all, though taste is subjective. Any sounds of nature are cancelled out by the "lounge music" played all day and all evening. It drifted up to our room, which was sadly one of the closest to the pool area. The staff by the pool and restaurant were charming, helpful and smiling. Our check in however was not so good. Only by reading other reviews on this site now we are back in England(!) do I learn that there is a private beach! No one told us and there was nothing in the room information to tell us. We did try to go for a wander, but steps seemed to lead to other people's rooms and other people's privacy. There were no signs or any indication that there was a beach, which is tragic and really maddening as we are not really "pool people" and would have loved to have spent time there.
On the positive side, the rooms are lovely and the view is wonderful, but altogether, too glittery, brightly lit and at odds with the surrounding nature

We saw Makanda under construction some 20 years ago and ever since, have stayed there in different villas. Makanda, nestled into the jungle, has been a wonderfully designed small hotel situated for appreciation of nature. Guest comfort has always been paramount, as has been serenity.

A new owner is intent on making Makanda something it was not; a trendy, music filled hotel with increased numbers of guests filling newly constructed facilities. Some will like the changes. We did not, finding the new decor at reception and the restaurant to be gaudy and not unlike 1970s beauty salon atmosphere. Music at the pool masks the sounds of nature.

A word about service. Staff members were courteous, friendly and helpful, for the most part. Drinks at the pool ought to be served with napkins. They were not. Music at the pool, a major distraction, ought to be optional at turned off at guest request. It was turned off, but then inched back on...

Nothing stays the same. We will have the former Makanda to look back to, but not the new one.

Makanda by the Sea is a hidden gem among the crowds and traffic of Manuel Antonio. A separate comfortable and lovely cabin with a terrace overlooking jungle green and the ocean provides tranquility and beauty and easy to call home while there. A luscious breakfast to order is included and brought to the cabin and set up to eat while overlooking the sea. A gorgeous 10 minute walk down a lovely path and the beach awaits. Darwin, the concierge, is responsive and charming and helps with any needs. A tropical paradise.

Room Tip: Cabins with an ocean view

We only stayed here one night, but wow was this place spectacular! We were in room 3 and the room was extraordinary. We had a porch with a view of the ocean and the entire front wall were windows to the same view. It reminded me of a modern bungalow in the jungle. I just wish they invested in the beach property and provided chairs and umbrellas. It's a long steep walk, so a little more comfort at the beach would have been lovely. Also, I would recommend booking here if you intend to have a car, as you will otherwise need to walk up a very steep and windy road to get to the main road to try different restaurants and such. Taxis are very expensive (one charged us the equivalent of $8 to take us about 1/2 mile). Overall a wonderful place!
