“Amazing stay at the Makanda!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

We stayed here as a half way point both coming and going from Osa Peninsula. We absolutely loved it!!! The service was outstanding, and the restaurant was sooooo delicious. shockingly so! Breakfast is served in your room but don't miss out on dinner served at their restaurant. The staff was so friendly. The rooms were gorgeous and well appointed. I was so excited to return back there after our trip to the south. We stayed in room 9 and when we returned Villa 1. Both were different and awesome in their own ways. And the views!!!! We will definitely return to the Makanda!

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights a week ago. The location is perfect with the ocean view. The breakfast is pretty neat as well. The best part of the hotel is the quietness and low number of guests. We loved going to the beach and even though it is a little hike back, well worth it. Nobody bothers you there. The pools is amazing as well and all of the staff is pretty special.
The only suggestion is to upgrade to flat panel TVs.

We needed a relaxed getaway and Makanda By the Sea was the perfect spot. The views are incredible, there is an amazing amount of recreational options nearby, and the staff is outstandingly gracious. You cannot beat the experience of sitting in the infinity pool with the perfect drink in hand while gazing at the ocean, to then suddenly have a group of monkeys pass by through the surrounding trees. Sitting poolside at night for dinner as thunder and lightning storms roll in across the bay is one of our most favorite memories. The food at the Sunspot is equally as fantastic as the view.

Top shelf. That's all I have to say about this place. I mean, seriously, top shelf. Here are my points.
1) Great location, I can't imagine a room there not having a view of the ocean that's landscaped by plush greenery all around it. The view from your room could be a postcard.
2) Great breakfast
3) The drinks at the pool are to die for...Pina Colada all the way
4) Great staff
5) Walking distance to Cafe Milagro, where the coffee is so good we have their beans shipped to us in Chicago for daily use.

Room Tip: There's not a bad room there, If anything, just ask for ocean view to make sure I didn't mis...

The staff are friendly and attentive. The food (especially breakfast) is delicious. The setting/views are incomparable. Every day we woke up and couldn't believe how beautiful this place is. Getting around the hotel involves quite a few stairs but it is so worth it! There is so much privacy and the views are spectacular.

Room Tip: The beds make a lot of noise when you turn over so if you're easily awakened that might bother y...

My husband and I spent four nights in villa number 5 last week. It's true the villas are private, very large, romantic, well equipped, very comfortable and with a sense that you are alone in the jungle. While the steps involved to reach the villas might be challenging for a few, my husband and I are in our mid-fifties and we enjoyed getting our legs in shape. I concur with all of the glowing reports here on tripadvisor! but also want to add that Leo (I think he is a manager) was so helpful and attentive to our every need. We loved marvelous Marvin at the bar was fun and very good at catering to us and making us laugh. We found everyone working at this resort to have such uplifting attitudes towards us and their work. I know it's been mentioned, but I must also write that the breakfast was such an unexpected treat. Breakfast is made to order off a menu and brought to the room within 30 minutes of calling for it. Usually it arrived within 15 minutes. The pool area is beautiful, with drinks delivered poolside anytime you desire. This place has so few rooms, that you feel such attentive care and every employee knows you by name within a day.

Room Tip: Check in advance for a villa with the fewest steps if this might be an issue for anyone in your part...

Just got back from 1 week at Makanda. We were very excited to be staying here and I can tell you that the hotel lives up to the pictures online. The view from the rooms and the pool are breathtaking. The restaurant serves excellent food; has an incredible view and a limited menu of course but we ate there twice and were not disappointed. Prices are about $12 a plate for lunch and $15-$24 a plate for dinner, maybe a little pricey sure but comparable to a hotel in the US, and considering the quality of the food it was worth it. My girlfriend had a chocolate brownie there that was one of the best brownies we ever tasted, I swear.

Staff is very nice, front desk/bartenders speak very good English, and are very personable. We had Darwin and Leo at the front desk and Christopher, Javier, and Marvin working different shifts in the bar/pool area while we were there, and thoroughly enjoyed interacting with all of them. (those are bonus points for those guys in case management is reading!) The private beach is also very nice, yes it is a bit of a walk down and back up from the hotel but it's worth it, very secluded, a little rocky, but still worth the walk down.

Very happy with our stay!
