My boyfriend and I stayed at the Hotel California for 4 nights in February of 2008. While nothing terrible happened during our stay, there also wasn't really much that impressed us, either.

We stayed in one of the deluxe rooms, which has a nice view of the ocean. We would've liked to have sat outside and enjoyed the view more, but the plastic lawn chairs they use on the balconies made that pretty unrealistic. The room itself was clean and adequate, but the bed they provided was awful. The mattress was maybe an inch thick - it felt like the mattress I was given my first year of college in the dorms - yuck!

The breakfast that they served in the morning was ok - a selection of fresh fruit, eggs, rice and beans, bread, coffee, and juice. We had a couple of meals at the restaurant, and the food was just ok - nothing was bad, but nothing really made us say "Wow, that's really good." Drinks were kinda pricey based on the other places we visited in the area.

A nice feature the hotel has is a shuttle to the beach - that came in handy a couple of times. The pool was a disappointment. It was small and cold and didn't feel clean. And the hot tub is apparently perpetually broken. If you aren't ever planning on fixing it, then you should demolish it and make the pool a little bigger.

The staff was mostly friendly enough. We had a couple of instances where we called for extra towels in the evening, but no one ever brought them. And when we tried to make arrangements for a tour through the hotel, we were unable to do so as the travel clerk didn't seem to understand what we were asking for. We gave up and booked our tour through an outside vendor.

All in all, while we didn't have a bad stay, I feel like we could've done better for the money we spent.

Upon arriving at Hotel California in Manuel Antonio, I was greeted by the general manager, Larry Sanchez. Immediately Larry's warm and welcoming demeanor gave the right first impression and set the tone for what was the best hotel and vacation experience I have had to date.
Hotel California is perched atop a hill in the middle of the Rainforest. Now, I've been fortunate to travel all over the World, I've even lived in exotic locales: namely the British Virgin Islands and Greece. The natural beauty surrounding Hotel California and the tasteful way in which the structure and grounds fit so perfectly - it's simply marvelous!
When I return to Costa Rica I will surely be staying at Hotel California! There really is no other way to go! Easy access to all of the sites, beaches, restaurants; though the Hotel restaurant, bar and pool area make it so you don't have to leave!
Feel free to contact me for more details! I've never felt so strongly about a positive travel experience!

Like the song says:

"Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California"
Any time of year, you can find it here..."

My last of at least 7 visits during the past 3 years was in the beginning of December 2007. The staff as always welcomed me like a family member returning from a long voyage at sea. My son was there with a friend in November and he was treated with the same warmth. It was his second visit. The hotel itself is just the right size and the rooms and grounds are very clean and modern. The food in the restaurant is excellent and so is the view but the best thing about the hotel is the staff. Beginning with the manager Larry Sanchez and everybody from check-in to wait staff to cleaning and grounds keepers and security are all typical Ticos with a friendliness and warmth that has made Costa Rica what it is. You should also know that the owner Robbie has a facility for handicap children about 40 minutes away. How may hotels are owned by such a giving person? I know that both Robbie and Larry are well known and respected in Manuel Antonio by all their peers and the residents of the community and Costa Rica.

I absolutely love Costa Rica and the Hotel California is a big part of the reason.

Lastly, I left home with a bad cold that only became much worse upon arriving in Costa Rica. Larry took it upon himself to contact a local Doctor friend and made an appointment for me which was within the hour. I had a thorough exam and received the proper meds and was well within a couple days.

As long as I visit Costa Rica, the Hotel California will be my home away from home.

This was to be our fourth stop of a 10 day tour of Costa Rica.
We arrived after a six hour shuttle drive from Arenal with confirmed reservations in hand at six o'clock in the evening. The Hotel Clerk refused to even look at our reservation since the hotel was full. We asked him to contact the Manager, Larry Sanchez who had emailed our confirmation. He dialed a number but said it was busy.
We were stranded and they didn't care.
After a bit of frustrated, angry dialogue he called Hotel Mimos and they said they could take the four of us in. Our stay at Hotel Mimos was so delightful we quickly forgot about the worst part of our trip, Hotel California.

Management response from ECOPRODUCTIONS, General Manager
(Management representative)
Jan 16, 2008
Dear TripAdvisor Visitors,

In reference to the comments made upon arrival to Hotel California on Dec. 27th, we would like to post a response to any confusion that was created. Our goal is to please our guest with a warm greeting and a home away from home, not a headache.
A very important note is that all confirmations for the peak dates must be paid in full 60 days prior to arrival to Hotel California, if a reservation is made with less that 60 days, payment is due upon confirmation.
Someone would have visited me the next morning if that would have been the case, peak dates at Hotel California for the Holidays must be paid in full or held with an active credit card. I would like to clear up any confusion that this traveler had on their reservation. Tripadvisor visitors should know that we honor all reservations made with a confirmation number in written form.

Best regards,

Larry Sanchez

We stayed 3 nights in a standard room at the Hotel California and whilst we have no major gripes it didn't have the wow factor that some of the other places we stayed in had.
Good points - very friendly staff (best we came across), quiet location with no traffic noise, great view of coastline, free room safe, close to bus to Manuel Antonip park 110 colonnes each way
Not so good points - curtain across patio doors in room were not big enough so people walking past could see us in bed or dressing (Room No.2), staff at breakfast were not very organised with things being put out late, the low thatch roof on eating area made it very humid, road down to main round at night was a 5 min walk in pitch dark so our torches came in useful.
We had a guided tour of Manual Antionio National park and saw more wildlife than at Monteverde & Tortuguero.
Summary - it is a good value hotel but don't expect a 'wow' factor. For that you have to pay a lot more.
