My boyfriend and I stayed at the Hotel California for 4 nights in February of 2008. While nothing terrible happened during our stay, there also wasn't really much that impressed us, either.
We stayed in one of the deluxe rooms, which has a nice view of the ocean. We would've liked to have sat outside and enjoyed the view more, but the plastic lawn chairs they use on the balconies made that pretty unrealistic. The room itself was clean and adequate, but the bed they provided was awful. The mattress was maybe an inch thick - it felt like the mattress I was given my first year of college in the dorms - yuck!
The breakfast that they served in the morning was ok - a selection of fresh fruit, eggs, rice and beans, bread, coffee, and juice. We had a couple of meals at the restaurant, and the food was just ok - nothing was bad, but nothing really made us say "Wow, that's really good." Drinks were kinda pricey based on the other places we visited in the area.
A nice feature the hotel has is a shuttle to the beach - that came in handy a couple of times. The pool was a disappointment. It was small and cold and didn't feel clean. And the hot tub is apparently perpetually broken. If you aren't ever planning on fixing it, then you should demolish it and make the pool a little bigger.
The staff was mostly friendly enough. We had a couple of instances where we called for extra towels in the evening, but no one ever brought them. And when we tried to make arrangements for a tour through the hotel, we were unable to do so as the travel clerk didn't seem to understand what we were asking for. We gave up and booked our tour through an outside vendor.
All in all, while we didn't have a bad stay, I feel like we could've done better for the money we spent.
