“Hotel Villas el Parque- bella vista/ unit 15”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2009

This villa had an amazing view from the open porch with a hammock on it. Clean and newer bed covers etc, fully stocked kitchen in our unit. We saw tons of wildlife from the porch, staff was pleasant and maids cleaned the room daily. Unfortunately though it did not come with breakfast.

You stay here for the view. we stayed in Unit B Bella vista at the Hotel Villas El Parque. The front desk concierge , Henry, helped us doing a lot of things. like finding us a guide for our hike through M.A. and setting up the zip line canopy tour for us as well. The beds were comfortable and clean. The place was overall clean. I wasn't worried about security. and a nice dip in the pool is great when coming back from the beach. I was here during the wet season and it wasn't bad at all. I will most definitely book here again when i return to M.A. and another great thing is LOCATION: a 5 minute , 20 cent bus ride down to beach. and the Cafe Agua Azul is definitely a place for the Ticos and expats. and tourists.

We stayed at Villa el Parque during the Easter Holiday weekend, spent a few days in other parts of the country, then returned for a finish at the beach. My wife and three teen age children and I were in Costa Rica for the first time. The view is as good as advertised, and we had the addition of seeing monkeys and hearing howler monkeys during early morning. Our room had new AC and new bedding that was quite comfortable, I think most of the rooms are now being redone since the earlier reviews I read. The staff was very helpful in helping us book tours, find restaurants, call cabs(never waited on a cab, they usually waited for us), and generally helped us out. We needed to store some things when we left, and they helped immensly there as well. The pool side breakfast included in the price is a nice suprise, and makes starting the day very easy, including authentic Costa Rican Coffee, a big plus.
The pool also made a great alternative if we did not want to make the trip to the beach, which is a 5 minute bus ride , or a twenty minute walk (downhill there, uphill back). Restaurants were within walking distance, including the Agua Azul located next door and up above with a terrific view of the ocean, and tremendous seafood and burgers made by the owner operators. Bank is two minutes walk, grocery is 10, so very accessible.
Enjoy Quepos and Manuel Antonion from this excellent home base!

Obviously, you can tell by the title that our stay this year was awful. However, we stayed at this same hotel in 2007 and had a wonderful time. So I'll contrast both experiences, and hopefully you'll learn what you need to know to get the most from this hotel, and not have the same experience we had.

First, Villas el Parque is not a hotel so much as a collection of independently owned condominiums (most are upper/lower duplexes) with a management office. You can either make a reservation directly with the condo owner, or you can make a reservation with the management office. This, in my opinion is key to having a good experience.

In 2007, we booked directly with the owner of the condo we stayed in, after finding her ad on craigslist.org. Because we booked directly with the owner, we knew exactly which unit we were getting. The owner clearly explained the unit's amenities, the view, etc. Her unit lived up to her description perfectly. The only drawback to booking this way is that you have to trust the person enough to give them your credit card # or send them a check. But we had a great experience. In 2007, I would've given this "hotel" an "Above Average" or "Excellent" rating.

However, in 2008, we could not book this same unit because it was already rented, so we contacted the management office directly. We explained that we'd stayed in 2007, had a great experience, and were told we'd have another unit with a stunning view. We were also informed that the hotel now had WIFI access in every unit, and this was very important as we needed email access for work during the trip. Upon arriving, we found that while literally every other unit in the complex had an outdoor balcony with a hammock overlooking the ocean, the owner of our unit had enclosed this balcony with sliding glass windows. Furthermore, the upper duplex had ants crawling in it, and the shower overflowed. To top it all off, the WiFi access was horrible. Now, this is Central America, and I'm not expecting super fast internet speeds, but if you say you have WiFi in every room, then I should at least be able to get an adequate WiFi signal in my room, which was not the case. But then, even when I put my laptop directly in front of the WiFi transmitter in the management office, and had "excellent " reception, the speed was so slow it took 45 minutes to download 40 emails.

Because of the combination of issues, we decided we needed to check out after night 1 of our planned 10 night stay. To give them credit, the office staff was very nice and allowed us to break our contract. We didn't check out until 3pm because we needed to find a new place to stay, so they did charge us for 1.5 days, but still, they were very pleasant and nice about the situation. We ended up paying 50% more to stay somewhere else, but we felt it was well worth the extra cost, as it was much more luxurious, albeit without the view.

PROS
--------
Affordable
Amazing View
Great place to hear the howler monkeys
Nicely situated within a short walk of the major restaurants
A 5 minute cab ride to the Nat'l Park, and 5-10 to Quepos
Nearly every unit is an upper/lower duplex with separate entrances, and individual bathrooms
Lower units have a kitchen
A/C in every unit
Good water pressure
Good hot water
Staff is friendly and helpful

CONS
--------
Experience differs based on who's condo you stay in
Rarely if ever see wildlife at this hotel
Pool isn't very nice
WiFi reception is awful
No in-room safe

The best thing about this place is the location, the view and that private terraces. We were lucky enough to get a room that didnt require walking up and down at least 50 stairs. The room was very plain, not much better than a cheap MOTEL. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and thankfully I brought my own pillow. The bed linens were at least 10 years old, full of pill. The fridge had just been turned on and we didnt have curtains that kept the light out in the morning. The terrace is huge and the view is amazing. The rooms are pretty clean though shabby. It is right off the street, across from a car rental storefront and a few great restaurants. People kept saying it was only a mile or so walking to the beach--- dont believe the hype! Clearly a mile or so means something around 3 or 4 miles. It is easy to catch a taxi on the road. The pool was pretty horrendous but you should go to the beach to swim anyway. We paid $80/ night so what should we expect. Mediocre.

  • Liked — Amazing Terrace and Views are spectaular
  • Disliked — VERY UNCOMFORTABLE BEDS. SHABBY FURNISHINGS AND HORRIBLE BED LINENS

My girlfriend and I stayed here in February 2006 during a 3.5 week tour of Costa Rica. To put things in perspective most of the places we stayed throughout the country were more or less backpacker type places (cheap hotel, not hostel). So while it was not a 5* experience we may have been overly impressed in comparison to previous hotels.

Having said that I think that if you are looking for a place with relative comfort, a/c, decent shower, and amazing views you won't be disappointed. We had an issue with our original room and they changed it for us and were extremely helpful. Staff was all very nice with the exception of the young girl who served breakfast. She very clearly had little interest in the guests.

The pool was nice enough, and when we were there basically deserted so we mostly had it to ourselves. But the coolest thing there was that monkeys would swing almost right up to the balconies.

As mentioned in the title of this review, the hotel is in a very hilly setting so you will definitely be doing a lot of walking up and down steep steps. If that is a problem stay elsewhere.

The location was great too being that you are in the middle of the road between Manuel Antonio Nat'l Park and Quepos with bars and restaurants all along the way.

Overall - if you are usually a high end traveler this hotel might be ok for you, but might not. If you are a medium to lower end traveler and willing to spend a little more than normal, you'll probably love Villas El Parque.
