“Great value! Right on the beach!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2012

My partner and I stayed at Hotel Verde Mar. Its a fine, basic hotel right on the beach. Not luxurious, but clean and friendly (except for one woman who works the front desk who seems to always be cranky, everyone else was great.) I'd recommend this place, especially as Manuel Antonio has become quite expensive, this place is priced at a much more affordable rate than most any other place, especially considering its proximity to the beach.

The location is great, right on the beach, close walk to the national park. We chose it because of the ``kitchenette`. no microwave, small bar fridge, hotplate you could put your hand on when turned to high, no TV. Internet worked not even half the time. Staff has a great don`t give a s** attitude!

Now there is a lot to be said for being right on the beach and VerdeMar is right there.. However it's a 2.5 star at best. The service flat out stinks and I'll give you an example. The so called "security" is two gates that you have to press a buzzer and give your room number to get in and out. Well they let you in and out about 60% of the time and the other 40% you need to scale the gate or jump the fence. It's kind of amuzing watching people scaling the gates.

The people who work here don't care about you in any way you are just a peice of meat to them. Also the showers don't drain but it really doesn't matter because the flow from the shower head is so weak it would take two weeks to overflow it. The wooden path leading to the beach has given more than one person a trip to the Clinic for stitches and a tetnis shot.

The "free" boogie boards are all broke but if you lose one it's $100 our of your pocket. They will try and charge you for towels you returned but they said you did not because one hand there doesn't know what the other is doing. Internet only works in lobby and it's down 50% of the time.

That being said it is right at the beach. It's a place you can stay at for a few days but then it will start waring on your nerves until you have to leave. I wouldn't recommend staying here more than two days.

Rumor has it the owner has left the property and moved back to Canada and doesn't care about the place anymore that is what people are saying there but I cannot confirm because I don't know. I would say that seems to be very accurate from what my experience was.

The rooms are small and the service is horrible. Pay $10 more and stay at a place that cares about customers. They have NO amenities and treat customers like cattle. Location is good but the beach isn't everything.

There is nothing good we can say about this place. We spent 14 days in CR and except for this middle time, we had a delightful experience. However, the staff here was not at all accommodating - beginning with our arrival until our departure. The rooms did not seem clean - not at all happy about these 3 days / 2 nights.

We stayed at the Hotel Verde Mar in high season (mid-week) and were able to get a room without making a reservation. The rooms are comfortable, clean and spacious. We had an efficiency with one queen bed. There was hot water in the shower but no toiletries (bring your own stuff). The efficiency had a sink, dishes, cutlery, mini-fridge, hotplate. Lots of hangers beside the efficiency to hang up your clothes (rod; not a closet). Air conditioning in the room or fan option (you want the air on but be sure the windows are closed or it will run all night). The pool is small but you don't really need to spend much time there because the beach is literally 100 m from your room. This makes it great to watch the sunset because you're not far from your hotel to get back when it is dark. Don't dismiss the food here just by the looks of the restaurant at the front reception (a couple of tables and a makeshift kitchen towards the front-left corner); the food was very good (I had the fish and salad) and professionally presented. There is free WiFi in the lobby only (couldn't get it in my room) but you'll have to bring your own device as there are no computers for public use. Having said that, always look for the free WiFi logo in Costa Rica as there are free hotspots around the country. We were able to get a discount on the room because we paid cash, so it doesn't hurt to ask (even better if you do it in Spanish so the other tourists around you don't hear you getting the discount). All in all for the price (around $100/night) this is a good hotel to enjoy a couple of nights in Manual Antonio. There are nicer hotels in Manual Antonio but you will be paying at least $50 more a night and you won't be this close to the beach.

Room Tip: Get a room towards the back, closer to the beach: second floor is fine too.

We recently stayed here for one night and wished we could have stayed longer. The beach access couldn't be much closer and the accommadations were nice and very clean. The a/c was heavenly after the 90 degree day at the park, which was only a short walk away. The staff was very pleasant and proffessional. Beautiful pool and mosaic tile makes it very authentic as well as affordable. I definitly recommend this hotel to travelers in the area.

Room Tip: A/C is key.
