“Paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

Just returned to Michigan after a weeklong stay at #403 Villa Cielito. Four senior couples age ranging from 60 to 78. Researched extensively for a practical, nice place to stay for a destination wedding. The website lured us in. Our concierge, Chris Madrigal met our transport bus and his 5 star service started. Our 10 pieces of luggage were taken cared of. He drove the 4 wives to the grocery store past his work time, help us run around, translating labels and buying supplies and would not allow any of us to carry the bags. He gave us his personal cell phone number to be used 24 hours. He even got us discounted rates for zip lining. From our terrace, we spotted iguanas, toucans and some monkeys joined us for breakfast!
The facility is super clean, the design is contemporary, the view is exhilarating, the staff accommodating. We had a tray of warm brownies waiting for us one time with a tropical flower arrangement. On our last day, there was a box of the special Costa Rican chocolate on the counter as a surprise.
Costa Rica is not even in any of our bucket list, yet because of Tulemar, we all promised to come back with our grandkids one day. Thank you Tulemar. It was a perfect vacation.

Our stay did not get off to the best start...after checking in on a Sunday afternoon, swimming in the pool and the ocean, we returned to our bungalow only to find that there was no phone service, no WIFI and no hot water. Since we couldn't call anyone, we trudged uphill to the office to explain our predicament. A staff person soon followed, fiddled around with both the hot water and internet, but was unable to fix it and unable to call a service person as it was Sunday evening. However, Chris, our concierge, was VERY solicitous...offered us the use of the shower in the office, provided us with a temporary cell phone, and gave us the password for the WIFI in a neighboring bungalow. A service person did arrive the very next morning, and fixed the hot water heater. The phone and WIFI issues were then addressed later in our stay. So, while I cannot give it a full five stars (they probably should have checked these things before we checked in), I give them credit for addressing the situation as fast as they could and for going out of their way to make up for the inconvenience: in the end, we were credited back one night's stay (without even asking) and we were also provided a free mangrove boat tour/excursion. Our bungalow (#121) was clean, comfortable and had spectacular views. It was very close to the adult pool, which was very convenient. The resort property was also beautiful and well maintained, and the private beach was to die for...Yes, the food was so-so and a little pricey, but there were plenty of other restaurants within walking distance (or a short taxi ride away). The bungalow had a mini kitchen which allowed us to buy groceries, which meant we didn't always have to go out for meals...The staff was always very courteous and helpful, available at a moment's notice to make dinner reservations, book excursions, call a taxi etc. My only caveat: the resort is literally, on a cliff, and there is A LOT of trudging up and down hill...but there is a shuttle service available to and from the beach (which, of course, is at the very bottom of the cliff). So, maybe not the best for someone old or infirm or very small children. But, overall a beautiful, magical place and I would recommend it in a heartbeat.

Hi Sarahnock.....thanks for taking the time to post a review of your stay in one of our Tulemar Bungalows......we are so sorry for the inconvenience on your arrival day.......we had a major lightning storm a few days prior that blew out all of the appliances in the bungalow....the TV/DVD....microwave.....etc.....we didn't catch that it also blew out the phone line (which carries the internet) and the hot water heater......again.....our apologies.....our staff should have caught that.....I'm happy that you enjoyed our beach....the pools and those wonderful ocean views.....thanks again for staying with us and we hope to have you back again!

If you have children, want a killer view of the ocean, or feel like you're sleeping in a deluxe treehouse, this is your place. It is a splurge but in the off-season can be a good value. One thing that isn't well-known about Manuel Antonio is the fact that most of the hotels don't have beach access, in fact, many are really not close at all to the beach. Tulemar is special in that it has its own private cove beach complete with sand toys, kayaks and chairs. We live in Costa Rica and I will tell you always ask if the beach is swimmable for children and many, many times you will get an honest no. Tulemar is fantastic in that it is safe for kids. The multiple pools on the property were beautiful and loved just as much as the beach.

The bungalows are really beautiful. The view is out of a magazine-- even jaded travelers will be awe-struck. The bungalows are placed high in the trees, the effect is really lovely. We are a family of 5 and it can be very difficult to find accommodations that will work comfortably or at all. Tulemar nails it. The 'living room' had a massive day bed that was: comfortable, big enough, nice-looking and fought over by all three of our children. The kitchenette is helpful for breakfast duties and happy hour. All in all I give Tulemar highest marks for a family locale that is beautiful enough to wow any honeymooners. Gratefully, the property is big enough and well-designed enough that the two won't have to cross paths unless they want to!

Big cheers on service as well. We were able to store our bags all day in a special apartment and actually host another family for the day and I can tell you that hospitality means we will be back. That doesn't happen often because we live in Costa Rica and there is just so much to see. However, our kids unanimously decided that we had to go back.

My only room for improvement comes by way of the food. It was 'meh' and with the price tag it became not just 'meh' but a big disappointment! I think they are working out the kinks and hear they have a new chef but please, bigger portions. . .please. It could be so great!

In short, still talking about Tulemar around here! It is really as good as all the 5 stars say.

Room Tip: Bungalows are a great value. Houses would be fantastic for a reunion or large get-together.

Tulemar Bungalows and Villas is one of the few resorts in Manuel Antonio with its own private beach. You can walk down the winding paths and roads through the gated community, take a shuttle or walk the short nature trails to the quiet, crescent-shaped beach which offers both sun and shade (and always an abundance of wildlife sightings--monkeys, SLOTHS, iguanas, exotic birds, crabs and more!). Boogie boards, kayaks and snorkeling equipment are free to use and drinks and food service are also available.

The bungalows and villas are tastefully built into a steep, forested cliff above the Pacific coast. All have full kitchens, so we stocked up on snacks and breakfast items at the small grocery store conveniently located just a block or less from the resort entrance. It was also an easy walk to many excellent restaurants (fresh seafood was superb) and shops. The family infinity pool was never crowded with more than a few families even though we were supposedly there at high season. The staff went above and beyond to be attentive--we had our own concierge to call with questions, ask for restaurant recommendations or help with activities and he checked in with us regularly to see if everything was going well.

Our only complaint would be that our bungalow did not have an outdoor deck to better take in the magnificent views and abundant wildlife around us (all the villas do). The bungalows are the oldest buildings in the development, we were told, and as they are renovated, decks are being added. Next time, we will definitely request one.

First, it is going to be easy to write about Tulemar, but hard to finish. We stayed at Casa Mirador (158). It was a perfect place to stay for our Honeymoon. Everything from the fresh fruit in the kitchen when we arrived, the large bathroom and shower, the comfortable king size bed, and the patio where we spent our mornings and evenings enjoying the wonderful surroundings.
Not only was the villa top notch and beautiful, but the entire staff at tulemar made our stay even better. We were greated at the San Jose Airport by Al (Casa Mirador's concierge). He was so nice and helpful. He stoped on the way to Tulemar to show us crocodile's and more beautiful views, and then stopped at a local market in downtown Quepos so we could buy groceries for our stay (since Casa Mirador has a full size kitchen). The next day we met Bill (our other Casa Mirador concierge). We walked to a local cafe in town and Bill picked us up and showed us around the grounds at Tulemar. He pointed out a large three toed sloth and a pair of blue headed mot mot's, he showed us the beautiful personal beach and the nature trails on the property. He also showed us the family pool (which is right next to 158) and the cafe pool. Both Al and Bill helped us so much and were there whenever we needed them. They would check in on us daily to ask if we needed anything, or if we needed them to schedule any kind of tour. They scheduled both a rafting and zip line tour for us, and the company's would pick us up right at our driveway of our villa. It was so convenient. We also used the shuttle on the property to pick us up at the beach (we would walk down there), and we used it to take us to the front gate so we could walk into down. Our driver was Michael, he was so polite and professional. I could talk all day about the staff, but i could just sum it all up with they were so caring, friendly and professional, and we have never been treated as good as we were here.
There is no doubt in my mind that we will stay at Tulemar again, and we know we wont be disappointed. I highly recommend Tulemar to anyone. Pura Vida

My wife and I stayed in Bungalow 122 in September. The unit is well maintained with great views. The building was split into two sections, bedroom/bathroom and living room/kitchen. Although dated everything was clean and in proper working order. The resort is steep but this also allows for excellent views from the pool and individual buildings. The beach is awesome and has perfect sunset views. The beach attendant,David, does a great job with the seating and water sports. David was willing to go the extra mile for the guests and even searched for a sloth for my wife. (He found one two days later) I would not hesitate to recommend Tulemar to anyone traveling to Manuel Antonio

We booked the lower part of the Buena Vista house for 3 days last month. Even though this was not the main house the kitchen was very well equipped and it had everything you could need.
The service at the beach and from the in house concierge were both excellent.
The beach is very nice and private. It is great that they have their own and you don't have to drive off the property like at most hotels in Manuel Antonio to go to a really crowded beach. The pools looked great also although with the rainy weather we did not have time to use them.
We would be sure to try to stay here again if in the area. A longer stay would be great.

Room Tip: Everything I saw looked great. The bungalows looked like they had really nice views.
