“Great Beach, Great Service - Pura Vida”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

We loved our stay at Tulemar Bungalows. We've stayed in the Manuel Antonio area before, but staying at this particular property really made us fall in love with the area. The service was absolutely spectacular - special shout out to Bill and Vanessa who kept everything so organized and made our trip so wonderful. They did everything from ordering groceries for us, to recommending restaurants, hauling luggage, finding us a driver, getting us a rental car, and we even witnessed Bill help rescue a baby sloth that had fallen from a tree. The thing we loved most about this property was having such easy beach access. Tulemar's beach is beautiful and uncrowded, and they provide lounge chairs, umbrellas, towels, boogie boards, and kayaks at no charge. We spent every afternoon boogie boarding and enjoying the waves. It's a steep walk down, but they provide a shuttle at no charge if you don't want to make the hike. We had the opportunity to stay in Mot Mot, a Tulemar Bungalow, and Lower Casa Panorama while we were there. Each has their advantages - Mot Mot has an incredible private balcony with a great outdoor kitchen and was recently renovated, the Bungalow had frequent monkey visits and a sloth right outside our front door, and Casa Panorama was big, comfortable, and modern with a beautiful view. The wildlife on the property was fantastic - we saw white face capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, several sloths, and cool birds like aracaris. There's also a nice pool area, and food and drink service at both the beach and the pool. Tulemar makes it so easy to relax and enjoy your vacation. Tulemar Dave and his team have truly created a vacation paradise, and we can't wait to go back again someday.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony if you can; we spent so much time out there just relaxing and enjoy...

Hi Volcanogirl......thanks for the great review on your stay in Tulemar.....it really means a lot coming from someone who has posted as many reviews as you have......you make us feel as special as we try to do for each of our guests......we knew you were a great traveler when you booked......even though we were almost sold out.....you chose to stay in three different villas to make it work.....(and Bill, your personal concierge, did make the moves easy)......thanks for the comments on our beach, the wildlife (and that abandoned baby sloth is doing well!)......and villas.....you were great guests and we'd love to have you back!

My family and I just returned from 10 days in Tulemar. I must say, it was one of the best vacations we have ever had. The house we stayed in Casa de Frutas was truly magical, the beaches were beautiful and pristine, and our days were filled with joy and relaxation. Dave and Mauricio took care of everything, from adventure activities to dinner reservations. I only wish Mauricio could come back to LA and take care of us here! My family has made me promise to return to Tulemar, and I can't wait to go back myself.

We were so honored that Felicity Huffman (one of the stars of Desperate Housewives, TV, movies and Golden Globe winner) chose Casa de Frutas.....one of our premier private villas in Tulemar...for her family's vacation earlier this month......they were wonderful guests......and blended into Tulemar/Manuel Antonio just like any other family.......Mauricio......the personal concierge for Casa de Frutas handled all of the details of their stay......(and please do not take Mauricio home with you!)......they were so active......and Mauricio set them up with the best.....from zip lines to waterfall rappelling......surf lessons......a private chef.......and massages in the villa with our local expert "Massage Todd"......(which Felicity claimed was also the best massage she's ever had and also wanted to take back to LA!).......they loved the villa.....and Tulemar.....and we'll be ready for their return......thanks, Felicity, for the kind words about Casa de Frutas!

My husband and I stayed in Lower Mot Mot for 4 nights in January of this year. The unit has been completely remodelled and we loved the outdoor deck. We absolutely loved everything about Tulemar, especially the private beach. We both agreed this was one of our favourite places. And we loved the little town of Manuel Antonio. Our only concern was waking up the first morning to construction right close to our unit. When we asked about it, we were assured it was nothing, and then woke up the next morning to more noise. Started at 7:30 am while we're trying to relax on our patio and have our coffee until about 5:00 pm every night. Loud hammering, sawing, yelling. It was like being right on the construction site. When we mentioned it again, we were told that a unit right beside us was being renovated. This didn't impress us in the least. We understand that construction has to be done, but January is peak season, and in most resorts, it is not allowed at the peak time of the year. We were told that they only don't allow construction at Christmas and New years. Our concierge tried to make things up to us by having a private chef cook for us on our last night. This was very nice, and much appreciated, however I still did not appreciate that we couldn't sit on our deck during the day because of the continual noise. When you're paying top dollar on your vacation, you should not have to put up with that. This is more to caution others that this could happen to you as well. I read another review of people complaining about the exact same thing. We do love Tulemar and would probably return one day, but will be very cautious that this does not happen to us again.

Hi Duncan6.....thanks for taking the time to post a review of your stay in January......happy to hear that you enjoyed Villa Mot Mot and Tulemar.....but had to endure construction noise.......we're so sorry.......construction/remodeling/renovating/maintenance is one thing we have so little control over......and occasionally something is going on.....(all 45 villas in Tulemar are privately owned).......there are rules to follow.....8 AM start times/ 5 PM finish.....but the work has to be done.....and noise is noise......we always want it to be done at another time......but Tulemar keeps pretty busy year round........if construction noise is a problem......we always try to relocate the guest to another villa......again....we're so sorry for the disturbance.......we hate it while it is happening......but love the final product.

We had the most amazing time at Tulemar. Casa de Frutas was incredible, the beach is perfect and the service was OUTSTANDING. Everyone made us feel so special and at home, we have already decided we will have to make it a yearly trip. I cannot say enough great things. It's so nice having a beach you can eat at and get drinks at, it's all so easy and gorgeous. We saw tons of monkeys and sloths inside Tulemar too, so amazing.
Can't wait to return!!

My boyfriend and I spent three nights in bungalow #116 April 11th-14th. We were amazed by everything about Tulemar from the time we inquired about staying there. Julien was incredibly prompt to respond to any questions and made sure we had everything we needed during our stay. We arrived at Tulemar just after noon, hoping to check our luggage and head to the beach until our room was available, only to be told our room was already clean and ready for us. We headed to the bungalow and we were both blown away by the incredible view of the ocean, which Julien mentioned was one of the best from the bungalows.

Once we were settled in, we headed straight to the beach. While the walk down was a bit of an adventure (flip flops and the hills don't mix very well!), the availability of the shuttle solved that problem for the rest of our stay. The drinks and food on the beach were perfect and let us spend more time in the sun instead of heaving to head back to our room to eat or drink. We also met Michael, one of the Tulemar employees. My boyfriend asked Michael about fishing in the area and, after some conversation, Michael offered to take us out fishing with him during our stay (more on that to follow!). After a few hours on the beach, we headed back to our room and got ready for dinner. Julien called promptly just before dinner time to ask if we needed him to make reservations for us anywhere. We asked for a restaurant with live music and were told to head to the Cantina. We had a rental car so getting to the restaurant was simple, although the place was pretty quiet for 7 p.m. with live music. We soon learned why Costa Ricans head to bed a bit earlier than we are used to in Chicago...

At 5 a.m. the next morning, we were woken up by a monkey outside our bedroom window. We watched him play in the treetops for a bit and then headed to The Falls for breakfast, which is about 100 meters to the right of the Tulemar entrance. We returned to Tulemar and headed to the beach. The beach, by the way, is amazing. While you are there with other guests, it feels completely private. There is enough room to be away from the other guests while still having access to all of the amenities including towels, kayaks, food/drinks, etc. The water is calm and the beauty of the beach outweighs the few rocks we stepped on headed into the ocean. We took a kayak out to the area where the catamarans had stopped to snorkel. The snorkeling wasn't all that impressive with cloudy waters, but it was nice to have the kayaks available at the beach free of any additional charge.

We spent the second afternoon away from Tulemar on a mangrove kayak tour. After returning, we headed to Barba Roja for dinner, again at the recommendation of the staff, and then went to the family pool around 8 p.m. The pool was open and empty, with a great view of the night sky and constellations. Definitely a relaxing way to end the evening!

Our third and final day at Tulemar was split between a trip to Manuel Antonio National Park and heading out fishing with Michael. The fishing was definitely one of the more enjoyable and memorable parts of our stay at Tulemar! Michael met us at the hotel and we headed to a public beach where we rented a row boat and hit the waters for a few hours. Michael taught us about hand fishing (we are used to using fishing poles) and more about the Costa Rican culture. While not a formal amenity offered by the hotel, this experience was the icing on the cake for a great stay!

Aside from the activities and adventures, we continue to rave about Tulemar. The staff was friendly and inviting while always willing to go above and beyond to make sure our time at Tulemar was memorable; the food and drinks, while pricey (about $19 American dollars for a grilled cheese and chicken fingers), were delicious; the bungalow was spotless and the view was second-to-none; the location was perfect with easy access to both Manuel Antonio, a variety of restaurants and Quepos; the wildlife was abundant (sloths, lizards, crabs, iguanas and monkeys galore!); the weather was perfect and, ultimately, we could not have asked for a better start to our 10 day Costa Rican adventure!

Room Tip: Bungalow 116 has an amazing view, although it gets quite bright in the morning so expect to be up br...

Tulemar exceeded my expectations. We stayed in upper Villa Mot Mot. It has 2 queen beds and a day bed. It could sleep up to 5-6, we were three. The kitchen is nicely equipped with small burners, fridge, microwave and winecooler. The highlight is the wrap balcony which looks out over the jungle. We had monkeys come play on the balcony and in the hammock. One even swiped my son's sock. The sun sets over the ocean and you can spend hours watching. Woe also saw birds and sloth fairly often. We hired a guide for the national park, but truth be told, I'd just walk around Tulemar which was less crowded and showed us many similar things. Each villa has a concierage who gives you a tour of the premises and makes himself available for anything-- booking activities or restaurants, trips to the grocery tour, etc. We didn't need a car... We could walk to many restaurants or take a quick cab ride. The private beach is delightful and we ended each day at the family pool with the lovely Daniella. The kids made friends and we all drank fruit smoothies. We loved white water rafting and zip lines. Go enjoy nature and beauty.

I have been to Costa Rica twice, and have loved it. The first time for a wedding, and the other to absorb more of Costa Rica. I have stayed at both the bungalows and the GARDEN HOUSE BY THE BEACH. The bungalows were great, but I especially loved staying at the GARDEN HOUSE with it's spaciousness and incredible views. The home is so well appointed with its lovely architecture, inside and out with gorgeous fauna surrounding its beautiful infinity pool overlooking the bay! I felt like I was in paradise especially being able to swim at night in the moonlight. It is such a convenient location being able to walk to its wonderful beach, or have a convenient shuttle in the compound pick you up for the 2-3 minute ride to the beach. The whole experience was so relaxing with daily maid service to make our time so enjoyable. On each visit we went on an the Canopy Safari zipline tour. What an adventure! Can't wait to do it again! The Butterfly Farm was so etherial as the incredibly, beautiful butterflys moved around with the soft sounds of nature. We, also, loved the sunset sail. Needless to say, I cannot wait to return and bring my family this time. It was a relaxing, adventurous, and happy experience as we absorbed the beauty and culture of Costa Rica.
