We are a family of 5 (kids are 9, 12, & 14), on our first trip to costa rica. We stayed in bungalow 121, which is very private and has the most amazing views (but I think they all do). We booked after reading all the rave reviews, and they were spot on! I will cover things I haven't read yet, but I echo all the previously stated compliments.
The bungalow is a great value. Our wonderful concierge, Chris, took care of everything we needed, and then some! He really seems to love his job and his enthusiasm is infectious. He even showed us the easiest way to cut the pineapple on the lovely fruit platter they had waiting in our room. Made us feel like his top priority.
Next time, we will book a larger unit with a balcony. They were great about adding a small extra bed, so we all had space, but I really missed having an outdoor seating area.
The service was amazing, with one exception: the beach "restaurant" service. It's tables and a waiter, with no kitchen in sight...no problem. We were the first ones there on the morning after our arrival, and asked the man standing there if this was the restaurant. He gave us major attitude, saying "doesn't this LOOK like a restaurant?, etc..." This was after I asked him if he spoke english since he was speaking to me in Spanish (I thought that was the polite thing to do), and he seemed very offended, saying "yes, some people say they can understand my English very well!". Bottom line: I think maybe he was having a really bad day, as we all sometimes do, but we never returned for a meal there. There are lots of other great dining options a short walk away, so it was fine.
It would be great if they had a poolside bar at night, with snacks & drinks, family games, etc. We met so many nice people here and we would've loved a little family nightlife. I hear that's in development, and we hope that will be avilable for our next visit. Maybe we'd be able to stay up past 8:30 then! ;)
The activities Chris booked for us were awesome! The ADR tour was the highlight, but they were all pretty great. We were struck by how happy everyone seems to be to have us here. We have been on many vacations where we didn't feel that. Pura vida is felt wherever we go. And we always feel very safe. The most dangerous thing is walking the narrow roads at night to get places...the cars drive very fast, so keep kids close.
We are leaving this morning for Arenal after 7 days here, and my kids don't want to leave! We will count the days until our return. Thanks to all the staff for making our visit so lovely and memorable. Pura vida!!
Splurge on a balcony room if you can, but don't let it stop you from going if you can't.
