“5-star experience, views & infinity pool. Interiors Would Benefit from an Update”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

We loved our week-long stay at La Mariposa -- the infinity pool and the 270-degree views are the breathtaking--the best we saw in Manuel Antonio. The restaurant, garden and pools (and the rooms in the main building) are on the highest hill in town and have expansive views across the valley, over the national park and the beaches in Manuel Antonio and Quepos and beyond. The hotel was not crowded, which was great, and I think it's because this place is underrated. The staff are thoughtful and professional and we are very happy we stayed here.
There are three pools plus a very large jacuzzi, and kids are allowed in all but one small barside pool. I mention this as a positive for families because kids are barred entirely from several high-end resorts in town or kept out of the better pools, which makes it very hard for families seeking a high-end experience but wanting to spend time with their kids. Yet because the hotel property is so big and airy and wasn't full, the kids (ours and others) did not disturb the experience of those travelers without children. There were plenty of public areas where one could find solitude. We enjoyed the public spaces so much that sometimes it was as much fun to stay in the hotel even though so many great activities beckon.
The staff are great. After two days, our server at breakfast, Marcos, brought me the green tea I wanted without even being asked. The front-desk staff, including Byron, Johannes and Sebastian, are very professional and patient and spent lots of time advising us on activities and booking them for us.
Try to get a corner room if you stay in the main building, because those have wrap-around balconies that have amazing views. The top floor corner rooms are best because they have floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors.
The only negative is that the main building and at least some of the side buildings are showing their age (a few decades), and they could do with updated interior decoration. The furniture and bathrooms are a bit tired and our shower tiles were stained. We had no bedside reading lights, only overhead fluorescent energy-saver ceiling lights that gave the room an institutional feeling at night, not the warm, cozy feel you want from a boutique resort. The sheets were surprisingly old and threadbare, rough on the skin. With a few updates (even just new lighting and new sheets) the experience would be greatly improved. While the infinity pool and jacuzzi look brand new with modern lighting and tiling, this contemporary feel hasn't come to the main building's guest rooms. There are a few villas that look as if they are newly built and their interiors looked new. So if you're particular about your furniture, bathrooms and lights, ask for one of those rooms, though their views may not be as great as the central building. Wifi is also slower than at nearby restaurants.
If we were comparing this hotel to top resorts around the world, we'd give it a 4 because of the lights and sheets. But we had a fantastic time and I think this is one of the best hotels in Manuel Antonio. Five stars and thanks!

Room Tip: Main building has lots of stairs, no elevator, so don't choose if you have mobility issues. Choo...

This hotel was a choice with our flight and my wife and I are extremely happy with this choice! There are monkeys visible while in the infinity pool which overlooks the Pacific coast with 180 degree vista. Staff made reservations without asking. Our room was partial ocean view but because of the property's hilltop location the ocean was still right there. At night Howler monkeys are common sound and iguanas and toucans are not uncommon. This is a 5-star hotel in every way. In the US our room would have been over $450 a night. Highly would recommend. Excellent breakfast as well!

This is one of the rare hotels that would charge your credit card before you check in if you booked it online. So, be careful. The room we reserved was full ocean view, but we were given a partial ocean view room, nothing like the photo. As we went to the restaurant for dinner, we realised that a large part of it was closed for a wedding party and a small part was left for the guests with a duo playing live music. In the middle of the dinner, a very loud disco music from the wedding started and overpowered the live music. It was an unbearable cacophony. We complained but were told that there was nothing that can be done. We asked for the manager, s/he wasn't in. We wanted to check out since the music was even heard from our balcony, but there was no one who could authorise a refund. The attitude of the staff was unkind, unfriendly and cold. We are spending the night in our room. No water in the fridge, the safe is not working and the balcony is unusable due to the disco music coming from he wedding. This is the summary of our first night. We will see if they will let us check out tomorrow and refund what we paid.

Room Tip: Make sure that there are no wedding parties during your stay and choose a room at the top floors fac...

We had three nights here at the end of our tour of Costa Rica and it could not have been a better choice. We stayed away from the main building in a small block of rooms set on the cliff edge with views across to Manuel Antonio National Park and the Pacific Ocean below us. It was a wonderful place to spend a few days relaxing. Our room was of a generous size and had a full-width balcony. Breakfast is a short walk away in the main building and tables have a stunning view of the Pacific. Get there early with your camera to catch some amazing bird-life. There is an excellent choice of food at the buffet breakfast and a pot of coffee is brought to you when you take your seat. There is a large infinity pool with some areas of shade close to it. Great views of the sunsets can be had from many areas of the hotel, the best probably from the bar. There is a useful shuttle bus to take you down to town and, more importantly, get you back up the steep hill. There is also a walking route to the beach by making a left turn at the hotel exit and another left after 300 yards. In twenty minutes, you will find yourself on a magical beach which can then be followed to the town from where you can get the bus back to the hotel. There are no shortages of places to eat nearby and we had some really tasty fish and chips across the road as well as eating in the town. The hotel does provide dinner but we did not eat there. There are plenty of Happy Hour cocktails in the immediate area too: the hotel does not provide this perk. There is also a small supermarket within 5 minutes walk of the hotel with an ATM close by. We would definitely recommend this place for a relaxing time.

We stayed here for 5 nights on an 11 day CR vacation and it was definitely a splurge hotel for us. We usually stay at more budget friendly hotels, but it was worth it because the hotel is absolutely beautiful. You could never leave the hotel & leave CR happy.

We booked a garden view room but when we checked in we were upgraded (for free) to a partial ocean view room. The views from the room (#14) were so amazing I can't even imagine what a full ocean view room has to offer. The room was very big & even had a closet to store luggage out of the way. We did have a drain issue in our shower so every time you showered you pretty much stood in a kiddie pool but that was the only issue in the room. We arrived at the hotel at 12:00 but the room wasn't ready so they took our luggage while we enjoyed lunch & the pool until it was ready. We ate at the hotel 3 times (two lunches & 1 dinner) but I'll review that under their restaurants tripadivisor - La Papillon

The breakfast was very good with enough choices for everyone (fruit, breads, yogurt, meats, rice, beans & eggs cooked to order. And you can't beat the breakfast view!
The pools at this hotel are amazing! They were the perfect temp & like I said before the view never gets old. Each day we were also able to easily find a chair with some shade. There is one bartender running around too that can provide food or drinks.

They have beach/pool towels for you to use while you're there & you can trade them out anytime you want. I wish when we checked in they would have been more clear on the process of charging stuff to your room. It would be easy enough to tell guests - you always need to sign a receipt when buying anything at the hotel, even if you have to go find someone to get the receipt for you. This way it takes the guessing game out of the equation. We didn't sign a receipt one day & kind of felt like we'd done something wrong when they brought it to our attention the next day.

The hotel was just a short distance up a side road off the main road between Quepos & Manual Antonio. We were able to walk to restaurants each night (we didn't have a car) and it was easy to have the hotel call a taxi for us. We took the free shuttle to and from the beach a few times & also took a taxi down there once (that was only ~ $8.00).

If you stay here you won't regret it & you'll never want to leave!

Room Tip: Room #14 had amazing views!

We enjoyed a family vacation and first visit to Manuel Antonio. The property is very nice with stunning views of the Pacific. Meals had kid friendly options. Staff was friendly and very responsive to our requests.
