“Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

My friends and I had an amazing experience at La Mariposa. As every other review has said (but is still worth repeating) the view is beyond incredible, the best in the area. The property has a large amount of wildlife and we saw our fair share of monkeys, sloths, birds, and lizards right at the hotel. The infinity pool is very nice and has a great view of the pacific and the rainforest. The hotel restaurant has a great selection of very fresh Costa Rican cuisine, which we were impressed with. Every staff member was very helpful with answering any questions as well as being very welcoming. The bartender, Fredrick, is really awesome, great conversationalist and can mix a mean drink. The rooms were nicely appointed but I think the original main building may need some updating. Overall, the hotel is great and I couldn't recommend it higher, for the price it's a great value.

Room Tip: If you're traveling with a group and need two rooms get rooms 28 and 29. These rooms comprise t...

The people at Hotel La Mariposa were very accommodating to our needs. We stayed there as guests in a great corner room with a view. I wouldn't recommend a top level room for someone scared of heights or who has difficulty with stairs.

I hung out at the restaurant for breakfast and to use wifi after breakfast. It was a comfortable and beautiful place from which to work.

The food at both restaurants is great too.

Room Tip: Higher floors require a climb up grated sprial stairs - not reccommended for someone scared of heigh...

Great views ...but lacking in many other services. We chose this hotel from the beautiful pictures and because it is listed in the 1000 Places to see before you Die book. We did enjoy the hotel, however, you need to know that the view is really the main/only thing you are buying. The hotel is walking distance to many places because of its central location. We took the very cheap (.50 US) public bus from the stop by the hotel when the shuttle was not worth waiting for to get us to the beach. However, the hotel has very little to do or enjoy if the weather is not perfect. Be forewarned, that main building has only outside, wrought-iron open stairs to all 4 stories. If it is raining, you are going to get wet. If you don't like heights - choose another hotel. Also, every member of our family of 5 slipped on the entry paver tiles in the rain regardless of footwear. The jacuzzi and pools are solar heated. Great for the environment but it rained and was overcast every day. They were never warm. The breakfast buffet was good but very pedestrian compared to others we had in Costa Rica. The internet service is not good. Even sitting under the router in the lobby we could only connected a few times and the speed was molasses. Sebastian at the front desk was helpful many times and the swim-up pool bar was staffed by a great guy who taught us to make grasshoppers out of banana leaves one day when we were trapped with a sick child and tons of rain. They do have a pool table and the gift shop/art gallery has better prices than shops in town with better quality. I would stay here again but only because I would know what I was getting the second time around.

This is a great Hotel. The view of Manual Antonio Beach is the best. The staff is great and all speak English. The pool bar has the second best view while the infinity pool is nothing short of spectacular. The monkeys also visit the property on a regular basis for the full Costa Rican experience. As far as location, you can walk to many great restaurants, banks and grocery stores, if needed. You can walk to the beach, all downhill about a mile then take their free bus service back to the hotel. They also provide a free breakfast, which is perfect before your daily activity begins. We ate at the hotel restaurant the first night and the food and service was first class. We'll be back

We had our wedding in Manuel Antonio and had all our guests stay at the La Mariposa. 56 guests all thought they had upgraded rooms because of the beautiful views from every room. The breakfast was perfect and there were multiple restaurants in walking distance which was great for our guests. We will definitely be back and would recommend this hotel for anyone that is looking for a great place to stay in Manuel Antonio.

I have read some of the recent reviews and wonder if I stayed at the same hotel with the negative comments. We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and experienced none of the negative experiences as others. When traveling to Costa Rica, you will see bugs and such, we had no insects in either of our 2 rooms and rude travelers are truly a pain, but not the hotels fault.

We stayed at the hotel 4 years ago and returned for the views and service. We had 4 adults and 2 12 yr old gals. From the check in, to the MANY requests I made to the front desk, where to buy a birthday cake (Emilos), charging up my phone with minutes, tour info, reservations for 14 people at the restaurant and delivering pizza to 9 girls for a birthday party, towels, etc. They could not have been more helpful. One of the managers, Daniel was a true pleasure and professional to deal with. He and his staff handled it all!

The hotel appears to be the highest property in MA and has stunning views. There are 3 pools and one large hot tub at the hotel. All the pools have spectacular views and the 2 upper pools, swim up bars. Be ready, the pools are cold, at least for us Fl folk. Freddy the pool bartender did a fantastic job keep up with out many drink orders, always with a smile on his face.

Breakfast was good and we had a visit from the monkeys who staged a raid on the breakfast area getting some eggs and bananas. We enjoyed seeing them eat on the railing and stairs of the hotel. We arranged dinner for 14 people at the restaurant. The service was great even during a violent storm which rolled in as the entree did. As others have reviewed, the chef needs to step up the game for the food, it was not bad, nor was it that good.

Be warned, if you get a room on the 4th floor, be prepared to get a work out going up the spiral stairs. If you have 2 families get rooms 28 and 29 which share a large patio area. One of the rooms we had was 40 which had incredible views. All the rooms had views, room 40 is special.

If you are in OK shape, the hotel is close enough to the road that you could walk to several restaurants, I highly recommend Milagro's. Excellent food! Enjoy your stay at MA and kick back at the infinity pool at the hotel with a drink from Freddy!

Room Tip: 40 for the spectacular views. Rooms 28 and 29 which are adjoining and share a large patio area.

I am still here at the hotel. Writing from the pool on our final night of 10 in CR. this is by far my least favorite of the 3 hotels we stayed at.

What i like about La Mariposa:
- welcomed with a smile and a bottle of wine.
- location
- great pool
- views!!!!

What i dont:
- we arrived to a room full of moths, bugs and lizards. The bathroom window was wide open.
- while the pool is beautiful, it is small. If one loud couple shows up, or worse - a loud family with kids - there is nowhere to hide. Now, what bugs me most is that they allow people not staying at the hotel but using the restaurant to use the pool, and also people can pay $30 just to use the pool. This pool is WAY too small to do that. It feels crowded with only 10 people. We were enjoying the pool when a family of 8 came to the pool from outside, with day bags everywhere, loud kids, jumping in the pool, spashing, parents talking loudly on their phones and all of them looking to get their money's worth out of the pool and facilities. REALLY!? We had to leave. It was just not relaxing any more. Complained to front desk and they told me that other people are able to use the pool, but offered no solutions. Even today as i write, there is a couple next to us playing music out loud that we dont like from their ipad - nowhere to hide, and i dont want to be a jerk asking them to turn it off.
- restaurant was mixed. Got a few things that were good. But i also ordered a ribeye based on the hosts suggestion. Bad idea. Ordered it medium rare and they undertstood perfectly. Came out completely raw. As in - just raw! Sent it back, came back raw again (my wife has now completed her meal which was ok). 3rd time was cooked fine - but it was inedible. Like rubber. Really. I could not believe the chef would serve such a piece of meat. I am not picky, and have never sent back a steak for any reason - but this was just gross. We did not go back to the hotel restaurant after that for anything except breakfast which was ok. There are many good restaurants in the area.
- front desk was minumally helpful when it comes to advice regarding what to do in the area. Got the feeling they were pointing us to places where they earn referral commission. Who knows? But they only knew about a few tours in the area that they show you in a photocopied menu. They don't know about anything off their menu. Or at least they didn't for us.
- generally, nobody seemed to care much about the guest experience here. They listen to complaints, say sorry, and then just move on. Not even a free drink or dessert (not like i care, but the gesture would have been nice). It is what it is.

Or maybe we are just spoiled after spending the week prior in other parts of the country where the hotels were phenominal and the people were genuinely happy you were there. Lost Iguana was great in Arenal, and our stay at El Silencio in Bajos Del Toro was absolutely incredible in every possible way.
