“The views are incredible”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

Pretty pricey, good and friendly service, Maria at the front desk is wonderful, the welcoming papaya frappe was delicious, the infinity pool most romantic, and the patio with chairs & hammock off our room was excellent!

Room Tip: We had a standard ocean view and it was lovely. they added a bed for the third person.

At the last minute we decided to change our reservation, cancelling our room in Quepos and booking 4 nights at La Mariposa in the hills of Manuel Antonio. Never a better decision will I make in my life. Nothing could have prepared us for the incredible views and wonderful staff. Initially we had wanted to be closer to Quepos with more activity. But the hills from Quepos to Manuel Antonio were actually full of life, restaurants and cabs. About a 20-25 (hilly, calf burning) walk from the Ocean and the small town of Manuel Antonio, the hotel also offered daily shuttles to the water. The staff helped us arrange our trip back to San Jose and gave us the vacation of a lifetime. We never wanted to leave!!

Room Tip: Garden side room was spacious but no hooks in the bathrooms!

This property is amazing with views to die for. Unfortunately the standard rooms are very bare with no pictures, lamps, or even a clock. Of course the scenery makes up for it and the service was excellent. Breakfasts on the terrace were delicious and they bring a full pot of coffee to every table. The location is a bit of a challenge if you want to be at the beach all the time, but the hotel buses and city buses can get you up and down the hill. Walking is treacherous, especially at night, where it would be good to have a flashlight. If you just want to float in an infinity pool for days and look out at the Pacific, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Definitely request an ocean view!

I stayed at Hotel La Mariposa for a family destination wedding. The room was really nice and the view breathtaking. Andrey Jimenez, the event coordinator, was tremendously helpful. The rest of the staff were also so very helpful with anything that was needed. The wedding was beautiful. The food delicious. Everything the hotel did for all of us made for such a perfect wedding weekend.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel La Mariposa for several nights.

For the first night, I give the hotel zero stars (if that is an option).

For the last few nights, I give the hotel 3 1/2 stars.

Having said that, when I arrived at the hotel and was shown our "Premiere Ocean" room, I thought that it didn't seem like the photos on the hotel's web site of that category of room. However, since it had been a while since I saw those photos, I didn't think about it any more while there. Until today upon returning home when I looked at the photos on the web. Of the two photos on the web, one shows a corner room with views two ways (i.e., windows on two adjacent sides of the room. Our room had a view from just one side of the room (i.e., we did not have a corner room).

The other photo on the hotel's web site showing a premiere ocean room is of a room much more spacious than our premiere ocean room.

I've included a photo of our room, including view of Manuel Antonio Park. Even though it isn't the what I expected from the hotel site photos, the view was lovely.

Having said that, our room did fit the description of the text on the hotel's web site. So, just beware that your premiere ocean room might not look as awesome as the premiere ocean rooms shown on the web site.

The first night we stayed at the hotel, there were large (not quite 1/2" long) ants swarming on the floor all across the room. ("Swarming" is not an exaggeration.) We didn't notice them when we checked in, but did notice them after dinner. Any food we had in the room was in the room's refrigerator. My husband stopped counting when he got to a count of 200 ants killed by stepping on them. We couldn't keep up with them. We complained at the hotel desk and with obvious irritation from the guy at the hotel desk were told that we needed to understand that the hotel is in the middle of a forest and there will be bugs.

The hotel did send an employee to the room to spray some Raid. However, after he left, there were still the large ants swarming. So, we complained again. This time with Maria, who told us the same thing about there will be bugs with a room that is in the forest. After our persistence, she said that she thought (but wasn't sure) we would be able to switch to a different room the next day before we were to leave at 7:30 AM with our tour guide. She instructed us to come back to the desk at 6:00 the next morning and we would be told then about our switching rooms. (She understood that we needed to know before we left at 7:30 AM.)

We went to the desk at about 6:15 the next morning. The guy at the desk was irritated with us for commenting about the bugs and gave us the same "forest" speech. But, told us that his superior would be at the hotel at about 9:00 or 9:30 and would be able to tell us at that time if we could switch or not.

My husband and I were frustrated because we didn't want our luggage to get switched while we were out for the day to a different room that had the same bug problem, or a room that didn't live up to the "premiere ocean" room description.

I told the guy that he ought to be able to call someone to find out if we could switch, and also relayed that the night before, Maria had said we would be able to know before we left at 7:30. The desk guy said to give him five minutes and he would get back to us. He did, and we were switched to a different room.

Our first room had a kitchenette; the second did not. We are wondering if the kitchenette might have drawn the bugs. In our second room, during the next several days/nights, we killed about five small ants. That's literally all. Which just goes to show that the "in the forest" explanation didn't fly. As my husband told the hotel workers, "Ants don't show up to a picnic unless they are invited."

So, the last few nights were great as far as not having bugs.

In our first room, the safe did not work. We had at least three hotel employees tell us that the reason was because a previous occupant had taken the key. It was as if that was supposed to solve our not having a secure safe. The hotel did offer to us for us to put our "safe" items in the hotel safe, which we did the first night. In our second room, the safe did work.

Neither of the rooms had the windows-on-two-walls view or the spaciousness of the photos that are on the "premiere ocean" hotel site link. But, as I said, the text on the hotel site describing the room did not contradict what the actual room was. Just the pictures seemed misleading.

If you have a wedding or other event there, make sure to get all costs and very detailed details in writing before you pay anything. Don't assume that anything will be included or not included. Get it in writing.

The pools are great. Absolutely wonderful. And, the swim-up bars, as well. The restaurant was great, too. Smith was our waiter/bartender on several occasions. He made a point to remember people's names and offer great service. His extremely pleasant demeanor and attention to detail a quite an attribute to the hotel.

The hotel restaurant food was good.

We did not have the hotel book any guides for us. From researching Trip Advisor and then googling his name, we went with a guide named Manuel Cabalceta. He was very good. Before we went to Costa Rica, we had "reserved" Manuel for two days, and ended up liking him so much that we were with him for one additional day.

The hotel's shuttle to the beach is great.

I've seen on some other comments where the hotel has commented back intimating that the guest had high needs or something of that nature. Perhaps the hotel will do that with this review. But, It cannot be contested that in our first room there were the swarms of the large ants, but not in the second room, the safe did not work, but we were supposed to be ok with the fact that someone took the key, and that how our rooms (both of them) looked was not at all as glamorous as the photos on the hotel's web site. (But, I will say again, that the text that is on the hotel's web site represented the rooms in an "ok" way. The pictures just made us think that the rooms would look more like the pictures --- like with a view two ways, instead of just one --- than they did.)

I did have a gecko in my bag. The doors on the patio and from the main entrance have space under them so a gecko could sneak in. It did sort of freak me out, but I considered it part of the experience.

The mattress was ok. We were so pooped that we fell asleep so fast we didn't notice the mattress, so it must have been ok.

The lighting in the rooms is lousy. But, it seems that way in many hotels, so, not unusual.

Also, since the hotel requires full payment by 30-days ahead, I would advise getting trip insurance. One of the people I was to travel with had her flight in the USA cancelled due to a predicted snow storm. She wasn't going to be able to catch another flight until two days later, which would have made her too late for the event we were to attend. The hotel would not refund any of her money. I understand the hotel needs to protect itself. Just get trip insurance ... in case.

Room Tip: We wondered if the kitchenette attracted the bugs. I'd stay away from a kitchenette room and mak...

we decided to splurge our 2 nights in costa rica and this is the place to be...it is the highest location in the area and the views from the rooms and outside restaurant are amazing!! the service and pool areas are excellent!! the rooms are super clean along with free wifi and breakfast..i did notice that the hotel has grown throughout the years so they added more buildings and rooms on the grounds...the best rooms are the top floors of the main building..views of all the jungles, beaches, sunrise and sunset..and the price really wasn't that bad for the excellent views!! the staircase is on the side of building so kinda weird if you are afraid of heights

Room Tip: try to stay in main building on top floors for best views

This hotel has quite a reputation and the view was worth it. I never got tired of opening the door to our room and looking out over Manuel Antonio NP. Our room was spacious and clean -no coffee maker but breakfast was served from 6:30. Our room was up a flight of wrought iron stairs - no elevators. The king size bed was very comfortable. Breakfast and dinner on the piazza were fabulous. The sunsets are striking and viewed from the infinity pool and swim up bar. We had a car so were able to drive down to the beach and to the Park. We took a guided tour and saw sloths, lizards, monkeys and many birds. The staff was attentive and very helpful.
