I think I want to write a book entitled, "Destination Wedding, What Could Go Wrong?" I was not choosing locations or hotels for my step daughters wedding, I was required to show up on time, look nice, and have a good attitude. Two out of three ain't bad!
First, getting from the airport in San Jose to the hotel was hilarious... How? I will get to that..(again, I didn't not make these arrangements, I was paying and showing up) I'm not sure I would have done it differently, but the "bus" was to pick us up at the airport and take us to the hotel. Turns out the "bus" left from the Denny's Restaurant... which was a multi use facility that functions as a bus station, casino, and looks exactly like a Denny's in (incert) any US southern city.
If you have been in a vehicle overseas you already know traffic signs and road strips have no bearing on how drivers operate vehicles. My beautiful wife, however, has never experienced this before, and my "aggresive" driving style looks very tame after our driver passed on a solid line, up hill, with a blind spot. Awesome! She screamed.. I laughed, the lady infront of us was thrown from her seat and hit the door... it was just part of the experience.
After a pleasent stop at the drivers preferred "tourist" boutique, we used the facilities, bought some local cigars and trinkets, he got his cut from the store owner, and we were back on our way to the hotel. I didn't know the trip was going to take 6+ hours, but the scenery was beautiful, and it was completely dark when we arrived at the hotel... You are correct.. it was a very long travel day!
The room was close to the hotel office, and a short walk up a series of very steep stairs. The AC was "different" and after the front desk sent someone to check on it, we were assured that our room would be cool when we returned. We made our way to the hotel, and tried to imagine what we could not see in the pitch black.
It is worth noting the the hotel has a chain of variously themed restaurants in area. Also worth noting, metric shot glasses are significantly smaller than US shot glasses, and cost the same. You will not taste alcohol in a local drink, and they will not add more because you ask them to. The food was beautiful, not cheap, and had no seasoning added. I don't know how to say bland in Spanish, but it worth adding to your vocabulary before heading a local restaurant.
When morning arrived, we were amazed at how beautiful the view was!!! Amazing... The our room faced the driveway, no ocean view, and sould have requested a different room, but (See the 3 requirements I was given).
The hotel was safe, had some beautiful vistas, but was pricey and I will definately do things differently next time. Want to go back wilh knowledge gained.
Room Tip: Ask to see room options when you arrive and ask what the view is if it is dark when you arrive.

Hi Jon C,
Thanks for your well thought out and fairly funny review! Here is Costa Rica we love it when our guests can roll with the Pura Vida.
Sorry about your lengthy trip from the airport. It definitely should have taken only about 3 hours provided that you flew in to the correct international airport, Juan Santamaria. Otherwise, perhaps your driver just decided that you might like the scenic route. We hope your wife started to feel more comfortable at some point. On the roads here traffic "laws" are often more like "suggestions".
You'll be happy to know that the "different" air conditioning you mention is in the process of upgrades. Nearly half the hotel is already complete and we have plans for more this year. We affectionately refer to the older units as our dinosaurs and hope they ultimately kept you cool. By your next visit we should be able to ensure you have a new unit.
Our view is stunning and we're proud to boast that it can be enjoyed from most of our rooms! However, in high season when we're full there are a few guests that need to enjoy the view from various spots throughout the grounds or visit their neighbors:)
Again, we do appreciate your thoughts. We hope that you, your family and friends and your step daughter and her new husband had an amazing wedding event and stay in Costa Rica. Pura Vida!
