Wildlife certainly isn't predictable, but I saw plenty of people -- and no monkeys -- during my two day stay at this hotel. There were monkeys (and other wildlife) to be seen at nearby Manuel Antonio National Park, which makes a pleasant day outing. The beach there is excellent, and monkeys and sloths like to hang out in the nearby trees.
The problem is that the hotel has no real beach of its own -- it's a long walk down a big hill to the closest beach, and that one isn't as good for swimming as Manuel Antonio. The hotel pool I used -- I had to drive to it from my room -- was small and unexceptional.
That said, my room in Block E was very pretty and comfortable, with a decent ocean view (the best views are from the hotel's overpriced main restaurant), a nice deck and a kitchenette with fullsize refrigerator (great for keeping drinks cold in this very warm climate). I paid $137
/night w/o breakfast, which seemed a little pricey, but probably not bad for the area. The main drawback to the room was the enormous number of bugs (mostly small ants) that kept appearing everywhere. I could live with it -- we're talking the tropics folks -- but bug-o-
phobes should stay elsewhere.
After a full day at Manuel Antonio, I felt I had enough of the beach and headed elsewhere in Costa Rica. The coast here is very built up and teaming with tourists. It feels like the American real estate agents want to annex the territory for our 51st state! If that's what you're looking for, you'll be happy, but if you're looking for the "real" Costa Rica, a brief visit is probably all you'll want.
