“Stayed here twice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

The Costa Verde is a really jungly place with all kinds of cool nature and animals running around. The monkeys crash through the trees all around you all the time and they will come around for breakfast. The view from the pool overlooking Manuel Antonio bay is possibly the best in Costa Rica. Rooms are very spacious and you are getting a lot for your money here.

This was easily the worst experience I’ve ever had with hotel staff. We were only staying a couple of nights in Manuel Antonio and asked to see a room that wasn’t very expensive. The hotel staff laughed in our faces, and were so rude we almost walked out. (We probably should have) Eventually they put us in a “cheaper” room which was below the kitchen, loud, and it was clear it was not a room they would ever give to customers normally. It came with a few lizards and the lights only worked half the time. To top it all off they made fun of us while we were standing right there in this weird mix of Spanish and French (which we understood, although they didn’t realize). To be that disrespected by the supposed “fantastic staff” was awful and we left the next day. The hotel is overpriced for lousy rooms and parking is a pain. You can tell they only want to deal with customers that have a lot of money, or at least act like they do. If you are looking for a non- judgmental atmosphere I would NOT recommend this place. We travel a lot and stay in all sorts of different places; to date we have NEVER had an experience like this. There are some wonderful hotels in Manuel Antonio, pick one of them, stay away from this one.

Room Tip: Find another hotel.

We hope that you will accept our sincerest apologies. Our management staff is looking into the matter and works hard daily to ensure that all of the staff here adheres to a policy of “the customer comes first.” We believe, and truly hope, that this is a terrible misunderstanding. We wish that it was brought to our attention when it occurred so that we could have taken measure to rectify it immediately and ensure that you completed and enjoyed your stay with us.

We do feel that our prices reflect the value of our accommodations appropriately. We have mid-range prices in comparison to other area hotels. While we are not considered luxury, and we do not strive to be, we do offer a one-of-kind vacation experience. Our extraordinary views, both ocean and jungle, adult-only accommodations, distinct and sustainable architecture and four unique restaurants are just a few of the amenities that so many of our guests find special about us.

In addition, over the years we have worked to create a variety of room styles – from economy and efficiency to our penthouse – in the hopes of never having to turn any traveler away. With these room options, and flexible room rates in low season, we are usually able to accommodate any budget. We take pride in being able to provide a vacation home to nearly all travelers, regardless of budget, in this often expensive and popular destination of Manuel Antonio. We are shocked to hear that any of our staff would cast judgment on any traveler, for any reason. Again, it is our hope that it was a misunderstanding. We should also note that no one on staff speaks French as was noted in your review. But, we will most definitely seek to uncover more details and ensure that it does not happen in the future.

The lizards/geckos that may have visited you in your room are a little more difficult to apologize for as they are a way of life here in the jungle of Costa Rica. We do our best to use environmentally friendly products and solid building practices to keep “visitors” out, but we are not always 100% successful. The good news about geckos is that they likely gobbled up any mosquitoes that may have entered the room when opening and closing the doors☺

We are unclear about why our parking was not suitable as we do have ample parking for each area of the hotel. Sometimes guests are unaware of just how large the premises are and that we have a fair amount of stairs. We are working on a new webpage that more clearly describes the layout of our buildings, parking lots and restaurants and their proximity to each other and the beach. We have used crafty construction and natural materials to nestle ourselves into the hillside of Manuel Antonio and in order to create a jungle retreat that affords the best views for guests while not disturbing the wildlife too much.

Most importantly regardless of where the communication breakdown occurred there is never an excuse for any staff member to be unkind or rude to our guests. We do apologize if anyone here at Costa Verde made you feel unwelcome. We intend to work with our Reception staff to make sure that everyone understands that “how we make people feel” is paramount when servicing guests. We only get one chance to make a first impression and we are saddened to hear that we left you with a poor one. We hope that you will try us out again if you’re visiting the area again one day. Pura Vida.

Best hotel. Best staff. Best view. I have been to CR three times and traveled around each time, stopping at Costa Verde each trip. Hands downs the best of the best! Maunicio at the front desk deserves a medal! He is perfect for his job! Thank you to all of you for another wonderful time spent there. You all truly made our "high school graduation celebration" so special for two moms and our boys! Always excellent service, food, rooms, etc..... Can't wait to come back!

Sincerely,

Ashley, Tami, Ryan, Cameron, and Jimmy

Room Tip: No need for AC, take the view, there is always a breeze.

The views from the room were stunning and the room itself was spacious and clean, if in need of some modernisation. The pool area was lovely, and we enjoyed some good lunches here. The hotels restaurants had a great atmosphere with either great views or were aesthetically appealing, although the food is fairly simple and plain.

View from our room was wonderful seeing all of the bay, spectacular also with the storms!Glad we went out of high season as the pools and restaurants would have been really crowded.Food in the restaurants was good .We liked the quirky restaurants.A bit of a walk into Manuel along a busy road.

We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you appreciate our rainy season as we do. The lush green all over and the fantastic storms out over the ocean are surely a sight to see!

It is true that there is a stretch near the beach where the tour guides and souvenir sellers can be a bit overwhelming. But, people in Costa Rica are relaxed by nature so a quick "No, gracias" will usually suffice and allow you to get back to your peaceful strolling of the beachfront.

We hope you'll join us here again one day! Pura Vida

This hotel, while on a hill, was wonderful. The view from our room was great, the food in every restaurant was yummy, the people were nice, and the wildlife was abundant. The trails on the property were really neat, hidden in the rainforest. The monkeys are breakfast and later in the day were neat to see. We were able to spot a sloth and a porcupine in trees right on the property.

Room Tip: I think any room is good, they are all different as far as views. Some are of the beautiful pool, o...

My cousin and I stayed at the Costa Verde for 4 nights through CostaRicaforLess.com. Our breakfast was included every morning and did not disappoint. The food was awesome, the portions kept us full until lunch and there was so much to choose from.

The staff there were more than helpful and patient. The grounds were very kept up, lush and easy to navigate, even though their restaurants went up the street.

Our room could not have been better. The balcony with a view was the best part (we had a suite, room B12). The pools were well maintained as well, and one of them is 17+ only with a bar (although the bar was not open when we went to the pool, so I can't say if it was good or not).

The hotel has 'still more monkeys than people' on it's sign, and I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to see the Costa Rican wildlife just doing it's thing among the quickly-growing Manuel Antonio area. On my walk back to my hotel room from the pool, I ran into a troop of Squirrel Monkeys, who were high up in trees but not shy when I took my camera out. Then, a single Howler monkey ran across my path and joined them, it was a 2-for-1 experience to see them hanging out in the trees right behind the reception building of the hotel.

I did not see either one of these types of monkeys anywhere else on my trip, so I felt grateful that there was so much vegetation left within the hotel grounds themselves to be sure to give the animals who were there first a chance to live safely among the hotels.

local calls were .30/min and calls to the US were .50/min. Coffee was provided in the room, which also had a fridge, stovetop and some kitchen supplies. The wi-fi was not free, and we did not bother 'buying' the username and password, but it was available should we have needed it.

the public bus to the public beach/Manuel Antonio National Park stops right outside the entrance of the hotel and is .50/one way. the bus ride to the beach is about 7 minutes at the most and was quick and easy. It was nice being so close to the main beach in Manuel Antonio but not being in a hotel directly where everyone is walking around/cars driving by all day.

The people at the front desk were awesome. they helped us call our tour company when we had questions and when one of our excursions were cancelled, which made our lives and trip a lot easier. they also were accommodating when we had to leave at 3am on Thursday, so they let us turn our key in the night before so we would be all set to go the next morning.

the only thing I can think of was that there were ants by our coffee machine, even before we opened the coffee and sugar packets, then there were many more ants coming out of nowhere...but the room was so open to the outside anyways and it really didn't bother us too much...

Totally happy with my stay there, the atmosphere, the quiet, the views and the service I would recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in the Manuel Antonio area.

Room Tip: ask for a higher floor. our room was in Section/Building B and it was room 12, overlooking the publi...
