“Among the trees at Byblos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

Our experience at the resort was very positive. The only thing you must be aware of is that there are steps to reach the rooms in the main hotel and steps to reach the pool and restaurant that are about 3 floors below the lobby. The hotel is showing a bit of age but the grounds are beautiful; the view out the front is of the Pacific Ocean; and the trees in back are full of white-faced capuchin monkeys! It is delightful. The staff of the hotel were very pleasant and accommodating and the food in the restaurant was excellent. We very much enjoyed our stay and knees willing, would certainly go again.

Room Tip: For a view of the ocean, ask for the top floor of the main hotel as long as you can climb stairs. C...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

I recently stayed at Byblos for 4 nights with my 2 adult children (ages 19 and 20), and we thoroughly enjoyed our stayed at this lovely hotel. We stayed in Bungalow #4, which had an extra bed and a lovely view of the grounds. The only reason I'm giving this hotel 4 stars instead of 5 is because we checked in expecting to be able to walk to the nearest beach, and this is not really an option for many people, as the walk would be about 30 minutes and steep. The grounds, pool, and open eating area is beautiful, and the rooms were spacious and clean. We had a lovely balcony to watch the wildlife from. Also, we don't care for air conditioning in Costa Rica because it actually gets a little chilly at night, and we love the night sounds of the jungle, so we slept with the screened window wide open and the fan on, which was wonderful. This hotel sits in the middle of "Resort Row," so if you want to get away from tourists, this is not the place for you; however, once you enter the grounds of the hotel, you feel very tucked away in the beautiful jungle surroundings and wildlife is plentiful. The hot breakfasts were filling and very good, and we had plenty of entertainment from the monkeys as we ate each morning--they enjoy the pool area. We would definitely stay here again, now that we have learned where the lovely little swimming beaches are tucked away (our favorite was Biesanz--but like most of the best places of Costa Rica to visit, it is NOT marked, hard to find, requires a 4-wheel drive, and is not volunteered info by many). We also really enjoyed evening meals at Red Beard and Cafe Milagro, both of which are a 5-minute walk from the hotel. We found the locals in this area very friendly, and you are completely safe walking around, but you DO have to mind your things everywhere you go because they might easily be appropriated by the raccoons or others : ) (this includes water bottles, cameras, sunglasses, lunches, shoes, etc.) We loved Manuel Antonio Park, but don't be duped by locals offering you a parking spot around the park or asking for a fee to have watched your car when you return for it. Also, we LOVED ziplining with Diego and Andres with Safari Canopy Tours--this was a touristy thing to do, but so much fun, and they were great!

We really enjoyed our stay here for a few days in May. The rooms were nice and spacious as well as clean not to mention an awesome porch to enjoy the wildlife. We actually saw more wildlife and monkeys at the hotel than we did in the national park. Relaxed environment and felt like we were staying in the forest. Great service from David in the restaurant and Juan Carlos at the front. Easy to catch the bus to anywhere as well as plenty of dining within walking. Definitely recommend staying here

Room Tip: Go for the bungalow!

This is a nice resort, with a great setting and accommodating staff. There are no elevators, so if you have a problem climbing stairs, this is not the place for you. Our major disappointment was no reliable Internet service in our room. As a result, on one occasion I left the room to get Internet service in the restaurant because I needed to get online for work. While we were out of the room for about 30 minutes, my room was burglarized and my iPad and iPhone, among other electronic items, were stolen. The manager told us that she was sure she would recover our items; but to date I have not heard from the hotel, not even to apologize for our loss. Even the police indicated that it was probably an inside job. While we had insurance through Tripmate, we discovered that they don't cover electronics. So if you need trip insurance, do not go through this company. We were also disappointed that we did not hear from the tour company, Gate1 Travel.

Room Tip: Since there are no elevators, choose a lower level if you have a problem with stairs, especially if...

Dear Arthur B,
We appreciate your positive comments regarding your visit to Hotel Byblos, and sincerely regret the apparent theft of items from your room.
Although guests are always reminded to use the free safe deposit box located in their room at all times, it is regrettable that a crime of opportunity occurred during your stay. We appreciate you allowing our staff to assist you in filing a police report, though at no time can we possibly assure a guest that their items will be recovered, so we regret that misunderstanding.
Even though your items were not stowed in the safe, Hotel Byblos does regret the incident and made an exception to our policies to accept responsibility, as well as extending our sincere apologies, inviting you to a complimentary dinner, removing all extra charges on your account during your visit, as well as asking your Travel Agency to refund the amount for your entire stay at our property. Upon checking with your travel agency, they have assured us that they are in the process of returning that amount to you. Unfortunately, when your stay is booked through an agency, a refund must come from the person that received the original payment (which was the agency.), so we regret if there was a delay in the process.
We hope international travelers will take this as a reminder to follow all security measures when visiting a foreign country, as well as we hope that other travelers reading this post will note this guests valuable advice on double checking the exact coverage of your travel insurance to avoid the same surprise these travelers encountered.
Visitors planning a trip to Costa Rica or specifically to Hotel Byblos are invited to contact us directly if they have any concerns or questions. Wishing you all many happy future travels!
Sincerely,
Davis Henley Owner Hotel Byblos

Location: Byblos is centrally located in Manuel Antonio, with beautiful grounds that are fun to explore. A variety of great restaurants are located within a 15 minute walking radius, including a tasty open air restaurant overlooking the ocean just across the street. It is NOT at the national park. As with most people, you will likely be taking a tour or local bus to get there, approximately a 10 minute drive away. Quepos, the other town, is 5-10 minutes drive in the opposite direction.

Rooms: There are two types of rooms. One is a typical hotel room housed in a multi-story building; the other is bungalow style. We tried both and DEFINITELY suggest the bungalows. It feels much truer (and closer) to nature because of the beautiful high rattan/wood ceilings and each balcony overlooking the jungle area that Byblos is built into. In contrast, the more dated hotel rooms all look out onto the main road with only a sliver of an ocean view. Inside all rooms were standard bar fridge, safe deposit box and reasonable wifi. Small ants were found around the sink in both bathrooms, which is pretty typical for tropical jungle environments. However, there was a large spider spinning its web in the corner of our bungalow shower that kept creeping lower and lower over a few days. I'd suggest housekeeping pay extra attention to those problem spots. The rooms were otherwise spotless! For those who cannot struggle with stairs, please request a room closer to the lobby because there are a fair number to reach either the hotel rooms or bungalows.

Service: We had fabulous service at Byblos. Everyone from the main desk, to housekeeping, to the bartender and restaurant staff, we were treated respectfully but with a particular attentiveness. One of the restaurant staff noticed I was trying to spot animals and made a point of showing me where the sloths were sleeping and where to wait for the monkeys that hang out at the resort. I had the pleasure of spotting squirrel and capuchins monkeys, as well as a number of birds, agoutis and sloths! While we were at poolside, the restaurant staff brought water to us without our request on a particularly hot and sunny day. The pool is bean shaped and large, so several groups of people can easily hangout without feeling crowded. The restaurant has tasty pizzas and very plentiful hot/cold buffet breakfast. My only complaint was noise on one night. I believe it was a Monday Ladies Night at the sports bar and the music/bass was quite loud, even in our bungalow from way across the pool. Obviously with the open air concept of the hotel, there is no way to limit noise other than the turn down the volume, which I think they did around 11:30 pm. Though we didn't use it the sports bar has a multitude of large screen TV's, pool tables and a casino to boot!

Our stay was enjoyable and very relaxing. Despite there being a casino/bar, this is a resort that is well suited to families, couples and single travellers alike!

When we arrived the monkeys were playing on the roof of the restaurant, which was a good start. We have some less good experiences too;

- Our coffee mugs in the room where dirty and contained mold. When we complained at the reception to ask for new mugs, the guy at the reception got me some new mugs but with no intention to excuse or whatsoever. He looked at me saying 'why do you complain'.
- The bathroom was bit old fashioned but everything was working well.
- The first morning we had a la carte breakfast, which was included. We ordered the 'pancakes and fruit breakfast' we received two small pancakes. I was still hungry so I ordered some extra pancakes; when we left the restaurant we noticed that we had to pay for the two extra pancakes. Although we told the waitress it's a bit unfriendly to ask extra money to hotel guests for such a small extension of the breakfast, she said that it was on the menu. Which actually is not true either.
- The day after we got juice at our breakfast, which we didn't get the first day.
- I ordered extra pancakes this second day too, and now i got a whole breakfast with the fruit. This time I had to pay the whole extra breakfast.
- Day three there was a large group who got all the attention during the breakfast. The waitress was serving coffee for the group but didn't service us. Although we waited long to be served, we had to get coffee and juice ourselves. The waitress didn't service another couple either and that couple left the restaurant before they got their breakfast.
- The wifi reception in the rooms is bad. You have to be an IT-expert to get connection - which was almost impossible in the room.

We will not return to this hotel next time we visit Costa Rica. Although the hotel garden is great and there are monkeys daily, we did not feel comfortable.

I have stayed a few different places in Manuel Antonio over the past several years. I thought I would try something a bit different. Byblos has the real jungle atmosphere even though I could hear laughing and loud music from the sports bar which was not too far away. It did not really bother me too much since I enjoy music and a good time. The room was nice and clean. The monkeys were also fun to watch from the balcony. Everyone was friendly and the food was good. I really enjoyed the pool bar. It has a very nice atmosphere. Not spectacular but overall a good experience. I would visit again.
