La Mansion is an excellent place to stay! It is a diamond in the rough and reasonably priced for what you get.
The views, food, and room were impeccable. The staff were extremely freindly, and willing to assist with any of our needs. Its close to the beach and quiet and safe ( there's a guard that watches over the parking lot). Though close to being perfect, we did have two issues that bothered us.They were not willing to compensate us in full for arriving a day later then what our reservation were. We were physically unable to get to the hotel due to an emergency that took place in San Jose and arrived a day later. They charged us 50% of the room fee even though I called in advance to let them know our situation; we were unhappy about that. The other issue we had was regarding the laundry services. I sent my clothes to the laundry service they came back destroyed. Fortunately, the hotel did not charge me for the services which we were happy about. Other than those two things it was fine.

Although the La Mansion Inn was located down a much rougher road than expected, we enjoyed the secluded feeling upon arrival -- and were glad we weren't the taxi driver that had to back down the curved driveway. Although the hotel is not along the main road through Manuel Antonio, we enjoyed being off the beaten path and didn't ever feel far away from anyting or have to wait long for a taxi. We walked along the road in the mornings, but chose to take taxis any other time we went out. Although there are many hotels in the area, we could only see one or two from our hotel....the rest of the view was of the forest, ocean and beaches.

The hotel overall was very nice and had a mini-castle feel to it. There was some exterior maintenance (broken roof tiles, for example) that could use some attention, but I'm guessing maybe this type of maintenance is done during the slower tourist season.

While we were originally booked to stay in deluxe rooms, we were fortunate enough to change to the Penthouse suite (that had 2 adjoining rooms that accommodated us and the couple travelling with us). The room and the large open deck adjoining the room had a beautiful view of the ocean, the forest and beaches. We enjoyed breakfast on the deck one morning and dined in the breakfast area the other mornings.

The rooms were well kept, the bed comfortable and the towel art on the beds was something to look forward to every day. The shower provided plenty of hot water, although the drain was slow (which we mentioned to the staff during our stay and when departing). Overall, the staff was friendly and very helpful when we needed things in our room and asked for recommendations of local restaurants to go to. They provided us with walking directions to the nearest beach....which was a little ways to walk down a path through the forest, but was a well kept beach where you could rent a kayak or snorkeling gear.

The swim-up bar had a great view of the ocean. The bat cave bar was a fun addition to the hotel and a place to stop on our way out to or upon return from area restaurants. We didn't eat at the formal restaurant in the hotel (opting for local restaurants in the area instead), but enjoyed the breakfasts provided. There was free internet access available in the VIP room, which was open to all guests.

We chose this hotel based upon the great reviews received on TripAdvisor, and we were not disappointed at all with our stay. We would recommend this hotel to others and would stay here again if we are ever in the Manuel Antonio area in the future.

We stayed at the Inn for 3 nights in a delux room. The room was not huge but it had a fantastic view out a wall of sliding patio doors. The king bed was very comfortable and there was a table with 2 chairs, a dresser with a small TV, a small fridge/mini-bar, and a safe. The bathroom was adequate with a large shower. Outside was a nice little patio with a table and two rocking chairs and past that a little grassy area with two lounge chairs. The room was cleaned nicely everyday and the housekeeping staff left towel animals on the bed each day. One thing though, is that the walls are pretty thin and we were in the older part of the inn next to the Bat Cave Bar and it was a little noisy. It did quiet down before 11:00PM each night though. We could also hear the people walking around upstairs.

What really shined at this hotel were the outside areas, the breakfast, and the incredibly friendly and service oriented staff. There was a really nice pool area that was beautifully landscaped and spotlessly clean. There were two additional patio areas, one small, and one quite large, with really plush furniture and absolutely incredible views. It was so relaxing to sit outside and watch the birds and butterflies fly around. One of the staff even pointed out a sloth that was sleeping in a tree. All of the staff were very friendly and always asking us if we needed anything. Another thing to mention is the parking. The parking area is pretty small and we had to block other people in. We just gave our car keys to the front desk and they moved the car when they needed too.

The breakfast area is really nice and the food was delicious. Everything we had was wonderful. We especially liked the french toast and the gallo pinto. The young men serving us were fantastic. They were very friendly and liked talking to you. It was fun getting to know the young men and hearing about their lives in Costa Rica.

The front desk will book tours for you and there were no problems with the tours or pick ups. We booked the Damas Mangrove tour and had a good time. There is a shuttle to the beach right by Manuel Antonio Park, but we had a car so we didn't use it. There are also good restuarants close by up on the main road. Speaking of the road, it is pretty bad and full of pot-holes. We saw a lot of people walking up and down the road, but I think it would be a little bit of a trek to the main road from the hotel. I sure wouldn't want to walk up and down it.

Even though this hotel seems a little older, there was a great vibe about the place and we really enjoyed our stay. We would stay here again.

I was so excited to go to this hotel, I thought it would be the nicest place we would stay in Costa Rica...it was the worst. We checked in and the front desk guy was snobby and seemed irritated we were there. He showed us to our room, but we did not get a welcome drink or tour like other guests at the hotel had gotten. Although the hotel is non smoking our hotel room smell horrible. We told the front desk it smelled and he remarked that possibly someone had smoked in there and that we may be smelly humidity...humidity doesn't smell but mold does! I don't understand why the staff did not realize how smoky the room smelt and why they allowed us to check in to it in this condition. We were offerered another room that smelled like mold and did not have a good view, so we stayed in the smoke smelling room. One day the interent was not working so I mentioned to the same guy who checked us in it was broken...we responded to me well maybe it is just not working and did not offer to try to fix it. We had lunch as the hotel and it was over priced and not very good. The breakfast staff were great and the only staff that talked to us and greeted us...breakfast was also very tasty. When we checked out during the weekend a female was at the front desk and she was great...I will she would have been there during the week...I think she may have been much more friendly and would have taken care of us better. The room was also very small. The view was ok but the hotel is further away from the beach then the website protrays. I expected more, and if I could put a price on the value of the rooms I would say anyhting above $50 is a waste.

Management response from harrybodaan, owner
(Management representative)

As owner I apologize and I wished you had made the effort to find me as my welcome letter to every guest suggests in the event something is amiss no matter how minor.
I was not aware of a problem until I read your review. We have rules but sometimes guests break these and sometimes smoke in a room. I assure you that I detest cigarette smoke or any bad smell and we have a quite a choir with the amount of humidity along the coastal section of the Rain Forest of Costa Rica. Most of our airconditioning units and humidifiers function 24 hours a day.

Sometimes one of my employees has a bad day and it reflects in his/her attitude. It happens no matter all the motivational seminars in the world and it is part of being human. The hotel business is not an easy business. Despite all the failsafe systems in place, supervisory staff on the floor, me managing by walking around, etc. sometimes people leave not completely satisfied. The chain is only as good as it weakest link. I have 45 employees and 25 different rooms and suites. Some are more beautiful and are better located than others. Usually and when available we give people a choice and call them right after check-in to see if there are satisfied.

The reason I live on property is to try to make sure not a single complaint slips by me. However if guests do not make an effort to find me and choose to let me know through Trip Advisor or a lette rof complaint weeks later there is little I can do other than to apologize, investigate and reinvite them back to my hotel at my expense to show them first-hand why we received five stars and two Trips Advisor Awards. The reason I am in this business is because I like it and I love to make a difference in people's life. Our almost 80% year around occupancy is proof that most of the time "the system" works. If it does not work, I write apologies like this and promise that I and my staff try even harder.

I think your comment about price is a little harsh. We offer rates starting as low as $125.00 during the green season and we near full. For a five-star property this is well under the going-rates.

Cheers,

Harry Bodaan
