After a 5 hour car transfer, we couldn't wait to be on the coast and check in to this highly rated hotel...boy was I about to be in for it. From the outside La Mansion looks great, awesome scenery and location; step inside and it is a totally different story. The hotel staff is great, friendly and helpful, but, the excitement wanes there. The hotel is set in a great location, right in Manuel Antonio park but, is stuck in an identity crisis. The room we stayed in, a deluxe suite, was lack luster, complete with a browning floral arrangement and dingy floors. The decor was both tropical traditional AND 80's modern, complete with chrome and black leather. I am all for kitch and a botique setting but, this did not come anywhere close. The bed was large but, creaked terribly. The hotel doors slam loudly and the halls echo, for an extremely small hotel there is a lot of noise, including running children. I have traveled frequently and this hotel is not terrible, it just comes no where near the claims of luxury that have been made by both the hotel's website and previous reviewers. When I think of luxury I think of places like Little Palm resort, Nayara resort, the Iroquois or the Ritz, this is a mid-range shore crash pad at best. The outside pool area is decent but again shows excessive age and wear. Enjoy the surrounding beauty and local as much as possible, this hotel won't do anything to emphasize your stay.

Thank you very much for your comment and, as a brand new member, welcome to the sometimes dubious world of Trip Advisor. As owner of the La Mansion Inn I appreciate balanced feedback. As former President of the Moscow International Press Club and long-time General Manager and C.E.O. of the National Press Club in Washington D.C. I extensively traveled the world myself and if I have learned anything is that “Luxury” is very much in the eye of the beholder. What is luxurious to one person might very well be “run of the mill” for the next person. The fact is that if you look for true “Luxury” like at the Ritz Carlton or the Four Seasons or any other of the hotel described in your review you will be disappointed trying to find this in a developing Country like Costa Rica.

Fortunately, most people that visit us take this in to account when visiting Costa Rica and lower their expectations and because of this almost all leave very satisfied. Of course, there should be no kids running around in the hallways (we do not allow children less than 12 years of age) or you having to deal with a squeaky bed. The hint you left us of a black leather chrome couch we have yet to locate as we do not have this kind of furniture. As an owner who never stops investing in his hotel and continuously tries to upgrade his facility I assure you that no matter what style I select people will always have their opinion, very much like the 27 ice cream flavors of Basking Robbins – they are all excellent but not to everyone’s taste.
We just finished another terrific year because of all the positive reviews we received throughout the past 12 months. If we screw up, we fix it and move on until we get our next constructive cristisism. This reacting and immediate response to a particular issue is what makes us stand out from other properties. However, we are not the Ritz Carlton, nor do we pretend to be. We are a small owner-operated Boutique Hotel that captures the essence of Costa Rica and its people for “better of for worse” that goes out of its way to please its guests. People like former “Queen of Mean” Leona Helmsley or Donald Trump better look elsewhere as they more than likely will not be happy in the jungle. I was looking for your reviews of some of these stellar properties but could not find a single one.
