“A jewel in the rough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2007

Upon a friend's recommendation, we visited the Hotel
Parador last July and again at Christmas. This is a luxury
hotel with all the amenities anyone could ask for, but more
important, is the staff of the hotel.

From management to bellmen, the service here is
impeccable. The staff can not do enough for you.

Although it's hard not to visit other fine restaurants in the
area, the food at the Parador is up there with the best of the
other restaurants in the area.

They also have a very helpful tour desk which provides a variety of
activities should you want to explore the area.

Whenever we find ourselves in the Quepos, Costa Rica, area,
we will definitely stay at the Hotel Parador.

The Parador is an upscale hotel that is very nice. Big by Costa Rica standards -- 100 rooms, it offered everything from putt putt golf (wierd -- never saw anyone play it) to monkey trails and 3 swimming pools. The breakfast buffet is wonderful -- home made omelets, fresh tropical fruits, and the setting for eating it is gorgeous with beautiful gardens, outdoors. We had a pet iguana that joined us. This hotel is down a long bumpy road and you are almost a prisoner there. Taxis cost $16 round trip to go anywhere and that's a problem because food at the Parador is not very tasty (except for Breakfast) and expensive. We ate at Ronnie's PLace one night -- fantastic view, very comfy outfdoor place -- and it was cheaper even with the cab ride. Other restaurants we heard good things about were El Gran Escapo and Marluna. The Parador does provide a free shuttle to Manuel Antonio Park but other than park and a few sketchy souvenir shops, it is not much a a destination. Would highly recommend going to the beach in the Park as it was beautiful and practically deserted. They did not have our reservation when we checked in -- but luckily they had a room and honored our rate even though they said it was below what they normally charged. This is a beautiful place with every service imaginable, set at the tip of a peninsula overlooking the ocean. Many people just stayed at the pool which was very alluring since it is so well landscaped and with swim up bar what's not to like! It escapes being cheesey because it is so well done -- the old spanish conquistador style is confined to one building -- the new architect has gone with white buildings with red tiled roofs, and has made the place a showplace. Unbelieveable views are everywhere. We saw monkeys and had a great time.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Parador in mid-February 2007. Let me preface this by saying that the trip as a whole was wonderful. With the exception of the night before we headed back to NYC, we stayed at the Parador the whole time. The grounds are beautiful, and the service was friendly and efficient. The food was better than expected, if you want to save some money eat at the cheaper restaurant, the food is pretty close and much cheaper.

If I had one complaint, which really did not happen to us, there seems to be a lack of oversight by the management at the hotel. I noticed some people arguing with the staff on their hotel rates, most likely because you cannot lock those in via the hotel website. The tour desk is by the pool, and the front desk does not really communicate with them, and when our transportation did not show up, it took a few minutes to get to the bottom of the situation. All in all this is nit picking and I would recommend the Costa Rica, Quepos, and the Parador to any of our friends.

I booked this hotel through the internet, but that was probably the first problem. Parador uses a booking agency that is not so reliable, so that when we go to the hotel late at night, they did not have the right room for us and they demanded that we pay for our stay even though we already had through the Internet.

Aside from checkin-in problems, our room was average. We expected an ocean-view, but all you see is the jungle on one side of the room (with lizards crawling on the walls) and an ocean way in the distance if stretch your neck. Unless you stay in the Presidential Suite, you probably will have a view of the hotel property.

The good parts of the hotel were the pool and the food. The pool overlooks the ocean and is warm water. The food for the breakfast buffet is really good, lots of fruit, beans and rice, tortillas, pastries, and omelettes made to order.

Martin (pronounced Marteen) will probably be your waiter, and he seems to enjoy taking pictures on people's cameras for them.

We did one tour throug the hotel, it was pretty expensive, but a good tour overall. We went out on the wave-runners with Javier for 2 hours and did some snorkeling. Javier likes to pick up things from the ocean floor and put them in your face, and then laugh at you. Javier also likes to take you swimming when it gets really hot.

This hotel is probably the nicest in Manuel Antonio, but our experience there was average because of our problems with billing and the room. Maybe if you stay in the nicer rooms, aka the Presidential Suite, you would have a different experience.

We stayed at the Hotel Parador Jan 25-30. It was everthing we expected for a top ranked hotel in this price range. All services were impecable. I highly recommend this hotel if you have the funds to enjoy their ammenities. We did tour entire cxountry and found it a wonderful experience. Things I found that were overstated in research I did was A. Crime ( felt safer than US in all places) B. Driving (Some roads were bad, and San Jose is very congested, but away from the capital driving is much like any other country). Things that were understated, You are in a third world country, you will have to adapt , this is'nt California or ha ha Switzerland.

The hotel is in the most beautiful setting with views to the Pacific Ocean on 2 sides over unspoilt forest full of monkeys, iguanas, birds and butterflies, not to mention the hawks and pelicans which frequently soar over the hotel grounds. The views, however, mean that the hotel is on a sloping site on various levels, which keep you fit, but may not suit the elderly and definitely not the disabled.

If stairs are a problem stay in a garden or superior room (same level as pools, restaurants etc), but if you can cope with a hundred steps (although there is a small funicular with spectacular views), the quality and style of, and the amazing views from, the premium and premium plus rooms, make the exercise and extra cost well worthwhile.

The hotel pools and gardens are lovely (Pacific and jungle views) and the other amenities (shops, restaurant and spa) are good to very good.

When we were there the staff were charming, helpful and friendly and the rooms and whole hotel are very clean.

The local beach (5 minutes down the access road and then another 5 minutes down a steepish, stony footpath) is unspoilt and safe, but not easy to access if you're a little frail, particularly in the heat of the day. The Manuel Antonio National Park is 10 minutes away by hotel shuttle bus and has beautiful easy to access beaches, but the wildlife (for us at least without a guide) is sparse; there is far more to see in and around the hotel grounds.

Overall, this hotel, voted best in Costa Rica last year, is worth every one of its 4 stars!
