I ended up finding Johan via tripadvisor, and am really glad I did. While hiring a guide isn't worth it in some areas of Costa Rica, I highly advise getting one for Manuel Antonio National Park. While you can see what guides are pointing out to others without a guide, it's really not the same. Johan would point out the animal, let us see it though his telescope, point it out so you can try and see it with your own eyes, and then tell you about the animal, it's habits, what it eats, it's defense mechanisms, history, and much more. He even has an animal guide book to point out the drawn pictures of it so you can see it's name written out. He went beyond that to tell us about some of the history of Costa Rica and answered a bunch of really good questions for us (like what was the best brand of coffee for us to buy to take back with us as gifts). Oh, and he saved me from getting a horrible rash again by stopping me from touching the manzanillo tree (which acts like poison ivy). Really, this tour is amazing and Johan is super nice. He's wanted to be a guide since he was really young and it shows. I was unaware that you had to be licensed to be a guide and that he actually went to school for this! It shows and his love of what he does shows too.
