“August 13 - 18, 2012 Hotel San Bada”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

My husband and I and our two daughters stayed at the San Bada for 6 days. The location of the hotel is great - right next to the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park. Hotel and grounds are beautiful and the staff are wonderful, so welcoming, helpful and cheerful.

A very special thanks to Elias, in the hotel's Congo Restaurant. Elias really goes out of his way to make sure everything is perfect!

Thank you for an amazing vacation!

Dear Hetheringtons!

Thank you very much for your wonderful review and sharing with others your 5 nights experience at our Resort!

We are excited that you enjoyed our Hotel privilege location, right next to the most beautiful National Park in Costa Rica and that we made your vacations a very special moment to be remembered.

Our staff sends you and your family greetings, and they still remember the great time they had with you at our Congo Restaurant, with the very first impression you had with our Congo Burger… lol

My Family and I Just returned from a 10 day stay in Costa Rica, where we visited several regions. Our last stop was Manuel Antonio National Park. My husband, myself and my two boys ages 8 and 11 had a wonderful adventure filled time in the days leading up to our last 3 days in Costa Rica. We had planned our last 3 days in CR for some good ole R&R. When we checked into the hotel our travel agency had pre-booked for us we not only stepped into the biggest Party Hotel on the Strip, Casino/Ladies Night not what we had in mind, especially with our two young boys....but we also stepped into a room that took us back in time to maybe the 70's. The room walls were cracked, the toilet water ran and ran until you forced the handle up yourself , the water in the sink did not drain properly, and to top it off was that the fact that the bathroom backed right into the hallways which were outdoor corridors, when my son went to use the toilet with the bathroom window closed I happen to be on the corridor porch watching the monkeys
( the one beautiful thing the Hotel had) I could hear him using the restroom, I called his name softly and he answered me, :"Yeah mom?" That was it. My husband suggested we just take a drive and go out to see where the National Park was, at least this would distract us a bit. Well while driving up to the gate of the National Park, on the right side we see this beautiful Hotel. My husband decides to go inside and ask them about there rates. Well before I knew it we were being given a tour or the grounds by a young man named Gabrielle, he showed us around and we were taken back, everything was so clean, so quiet, there was a great restaurant on the premises (more on that later) there was a great pool with a slide for the kids, there was an adults pool on the 6th floor. Oh and then there was the SPA....just walking in there during the tour relaxed me. Well needless to say, My husband decided that booking a stay at the San Bada was worth it if we were going to end this vacation as we had planned, relaxed. We made the move and never looked back, The san Bada staff was great, starting off with the Manager at the front desk Christian, he took care of getting us into a great room. Then there was Gabrielle the young man that gave us the tour, well Gabrielle turned out to be a man of many hats, when we turned on our shower that night and we had a small leak, we called the front desk and Gabrielle was up in less than 5 min, after having acessed the problem, he took down the shower head and had a new one back for us in less than 15 min, installation and all. It turned out Gabrielle was very capable in many diffrent fields and great at his job, always happy to help. Every night the house keepers came to your room and would ask if you needed anymore towels or soap or anything, so we never had to call the front desk for one more towel or one more bar of soap, they were on it. Now let me get back to the restaurant, We had a waiter there, that we could probably write a whole review on him alone. Emilio, went out of his way, everyday, to make our dining experience the best one possible. He made my son whom only liked Watermelon, watermelon juice. He custom made dinner dishes for the kids the two nights we had dinner their. He made us drinks to our liking every morning, and when we couldn't decide, Emilio would make something for us to try, and it was always delicious. He went out of his way as a waiter, to serve us. Thank You Emilio. We couldn't help compare every other waiter to Emilio after that. Even now that we are back home, we joke around and tell the kids, Hey, Emilio is not here, to make it for you just how you like it, so eat up :) All in all. We have to Thank San Bada's amazing Staff from there Managers(Christian) to their Cleaning Crew (whom are always cleaning something) to their amazing Chefs and amazing waiter(Emilio), to their Conceierge (Gabrielle)..Oh and I had a wonderful Spa Treatment there, there Spa is amazing a must do if you can squeeze into your schedule, well worth it. The Lady there is wonderful, she's got great experience and left me feeling rejuvenated. So once again Thank you all... We had a wonderful time and got the rest and relaxation we needed!

AMAZING hotel and staff!!! Highly recommend for anyone interested in a total Costa Rica experience! Hotel San Bada is PHENOMENAL! The entire staff at the hotel were amazing! The concierge (Christian) was outstanding, always answering our many questions! The property was immaculate, they take great pride in their property and it shows from the cleanliness in the rooms, manicured landscaping grounds, pool areas, restaurants, and delicious breakfasts!!
Our rooms were nicely decorated, great views, and extremely comfortable and clean. We have traveled internationally, and we are very impressed by this property! During our stay (end of July-first of August) there were rainstorms, we always had hot water and power, which during some of the intense storms is quite outstanding!

Breakfast was deliciously prepared daily, with many choices and variations during our stay. The amenities were exemplary! The pool area was clean and our children had a grand time playing at the pool and slide!

We cannot say enough great things about Hotel San Bada, we had the trip of a lifetime!

I stayed at the San Bada in early August. There were some good things about the hotel, but also some very bad things:

Pros:
- Most convenient hotel to the main entrance of Manuel Antonio (don't have to worry about finding a spot to park, etc) it borders it
- Pretty short walk to beach (maybe 5-7 min through some short cuts)
- Staff was very friendly and accomodating
- Pool is pretty nice, but I never saw pool swim up bar open and fountains were turned off most of the time (we were there in low season which might have made the difference)

Cons:
- One night during a rain storm we literally had water pouring into our room. We didn't raise a big fuss because most of the water was gone by the morning, but we let the front desk know. The next night it happened again even worse. We showed the front desk a video of the water pouring in and they seemed surprised. They moved us to a new room, but weren't apologetic and didn't offer any type of compensation (We had 1/4-1/2 inch water over 90% of the room, and my toiletry bag had standing water in it from water coming out of the ceiling in the bathroom). Fortunately our suitcases had been off the floor. We found water stains (about 8 feet wide) down two walls so it was obvious it wasn't the first time this happened. As some other reviewers have mentioned the hotel looks very nice, but upon closer inspection most of the finishings are a fascade and I don't think it will stand up over time as the finishings are substandard (We could also see holes in the exterior door framing (not the door itself, but the actual frame). The hotel is new, but appears to be aging pretty rapidly - If you are going to go you should go soon before mold sets in.
- The Pro from being close to MA is also a Con If you plan on leaving the MA area much-this hotel would be the farthest away from anything else (Quepos, Jaco, etc)
- Food/Drinks were overpriced when compared to other restaurants in the area
- Rooms can be overpriced - I would would not consider paying anywhere near full price
- It was fine for us, but if you want something to do after dark besides sitting in a restaurant/bar this area is not the place for you. Not a knock against the hotel, everything within walking distance would be the same way.

Room Tip: 5th floor is best, but not sure that any of the rooms are worth paying to upgrade. 6th floor pool/b...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your recent visit to our Resort! We are grateful for your kind comments regarding that you found our Hotel location as the most convenient in the area, just right next to the most beautiful National Park and beach in Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio!. Also glad to know that you pointed out the very short distance (2 minutes walking not driving) we are to the public beach; once you are here you don’t need to take out your car for visiting the major attractions of Manuel Antonio.

Your comments on the friendly and accommodating service of our staff are very kind and appreciated. However I do need to point out, that your review is contradictory at some point, reviewing first that our staff were very friendly and accommodating and then stating that our frontdesk representative wasn’t apologetic, even though it was the same person who did a great job upgrading your room and satisfying your needs since the check in.

We are very sorry to hear the inconvenience you had with your room during your stay, nevertheless I would like to explain other tripadvisor readers the cause of this particular issue, we had for two consecutive nights heavy rain and rainstorm, product of unstable atmosphere phenomenon called La Niña. Despite the heavy rain unfortunately your room was the only one affected due to an obstructed canoe which caused water filtration. It is important to mention that we proceeded immediately to fix the situation. And in order to compensate you with the inconvenience we rewarded you with an upgrade to a deluxe room on the fifth floor with full ocean view. Even thought the issue with the room was solved and fixed the same day.

Thank you so much for reminding us the finishings details, since the rooms have been occupied, we cannot work disturbing other guests that are in the hotel, that is why we are waiting and preparing to improve those what you called substandard in your review in the low season.

In regards, to the food and drinks prices, for our tripadvisor readers we have an extensively menu, from dishes that start at $10 with beverage included, at this part we don’t unsderstand how it would be overpriced, the Hotel chooses carefully the best ingredients and fresh seafood or meats to prepare each dish. I would like to mention that in Costa Rica by law all the tax contributors in the restaurant area are required to charge an automatic 10% service tax and 13% sales tax to the final price, and we are very strict with this matter.

Once again we are extremely sorry that your vacation was not what you expected so, and we would very much appreciate another chance to host you in Paradise and make your vacations remarkable.

Sincerely,

Your friends at Hotel San Bada

We spent three nights in this beautiful resort, nobody cant beat their location, one step way from the Manuel Antonio park entrance and few steps from the main beach, restaurants, shops.
We had two rooms with full ocean view, where we can hear and see the animals inside the park. The waiters, receptionists and all the staff were so friendly and helpful. We had breakfast and dinner inside the hotel, the food is delicious! Definitely we are going to visit San Bada again and we recommend this place to everyone.

Dear Wiben

It feels so nice to read 100% true review, our Resort has the most amazing and unbeatable location in all the area just few steps (from 5 to 8) from the entrance of the world famous and most beautiful beach in Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio! Thank you so much for your time to share it!

We are delighted to offer to our distinguish guests rooms either to Manuel Antonio jungle view or both jungle and ocean view, we are happy that you booked the one with the view. It is also appropriate to mention that we have a terrace deck on the 6th floor, open to all the guests, with nice lounge chairs, pool and snack bar, and with full ocean view for those guests that decides for the jungle view rooms.

Our food is something we take very seriously, since a great vacation has to be accompanied with great meals!

Thank you again for you review and for recommending our Hotel to all your friends!

I organized a trip to Costa Rica for a group of friends this July, we had 11 rooms at San Bada for 3 days and I have to say that both as a guest as an organizer (20 years +) have seldom experience an equal level of excellence in customer service. From the General Manager to the housekeeping staff their friendliness and their eagerness to make our stay a pleasant one was a most satisfying experience.
The entire facility was well kept and the location is unquestionably the best in the area - literally 5 steps from the main entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park. I was hesitant to commit to having all of our meals at the hotel but after the first dinner the concern went away and all 21 of us were very pleased with the quality and presentation of our meals.

Dear Guest!

We really appreciate your words and the comments regarding our Hotel. We are honored for your accurate words and we are thankful for letting us the opportunity to serve you.

For our tripadvisor readers, this group consisted of couples and families looking forward for a vacation retreat at the most beautiful beach in Costa Rica, the first night we combined the best fresh ingredients to serve a fusion dinner with many local ingredients, accompanied by the traditional Costa Rica Marimba sound performed in live, the second night we brought the best of the pastas and made a Italian Costa Rica pasta night!, and the last night consisted of a BBQ feast with live music ... We are glad that your group enjoyed all the meals and the flavor.

We truly want to share this experience with others, since we felt that you arrive as a guest and leave us as a friend.

Thanks again for your wonderful review and we are looking forward to host you again at our Resort next year!

Thanks for taking your the time writing a review at T.A.!

We are pleased that the rooms were nice and that you enjoyed your view. Our rooms were designed to provide all the comfort and rest after an invigorating day visiting Manuel Antonio National Park or at the beach, and if that is not enought we offer the most beautiful spa in the area for body, mind and soul relaxation.

For the youngest members of the family looking for fun, we offer the biggest pool in the area with a waterslide, waterfalls and hot jacuzzi heated by renewable energy.

Thank you very much for recommending us and for sharing this experince with others, we hope your return to Costa Rica and welcome you again at our Resort!
