Because we hadn't decided to go White Water rafting until 8pm the night before, we didn't get to do much research and Iguana Tours was willing to take us last minute so we went with them. We did the Sevegre River tour and although we had a fabulous time, I can totally relate to the less stellar reviews.
First of all, they advertise that they give you a hot breakfast but there was no breakfast. Maybe not a big deal, but if you are like me and need to eat breakfast in the morning, it could be a bit of a downer.
Second of all, they waste a lot of time getting you to the river. You probably only spend a couple of hours on the river and other than a waterfall break and lunch, the rest of the time is driving and waiting for something or other.
Our guide did toss the guys off the raft, but except for one guy who got his foot caught going over and may have injured his ankle, we all had a good time with it. But I can understand how a lot of people may not like that and I would hope that the guides would get a feel for the group before doing it but from the sound of some of the reviews that was obviously not the case. We had JJ for our guide and he did a fairly good job of gauging people's willingness to be tossed and he seemed like a good guy overall. On the way to the river he explained about Costa Rica and the culture and we learned some interesting things.
Halfway down the river, we stopped at a beautiful waterfall and had some cookies and fresh pineapple which was delicious, while the lunch at the end was just mediocre.
There's one guy on a kayak who follows the rafts and takes pictures, which they charge you $40, which I thought was ridiculous and had no intentions of paying for, until I saw them. Two other two guys on our raft split the cost and we sent them a link, so I only felt like half a sucker. I have to admit though, it is nice to have the photos.
A couple of years ago my daughter and I did a white water rafting tour with Desafio which was first rate and the lunch was delicious. They seemed like a better tour company over all but I don't think they operate out of Quepos, otherwise I would suggest using them instead.
All in all, we had a lot of fun.
