“Everyhing about this place is great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

Have just returned from a three week stay in Costa Rica, most of it spent in this lovely hotel. The room was spacious, spotlessly clean and comfortable. It is set back from the very dusty road, on the hillside and although it is a steep climb up to the restaurant it is worth the trip - both for the food and the view. The breakfasts are very good - we found we didn't need to eat lunch very often and we enjoyed the dinners we had too. All the food is well prepared and beautifully presented, prices are reasonable. The owners, Aidan & Vicki are always at hand and they were both very helpful to us as we had a family medical emergency, they couldn't have done more for us and it was much appreciated. We had to leave very early in the morning on our last day and Aidan very thoughtfully left juice boxes and granola bars for our journey as we departed before breakfast. All the staff were pleasant and helpful and keep the hotel and it's luxurious gardens in immaculate condition. Definitely the place to stay in the Mal Pais area.

Room Tip: Older, less mobile guests may prefer a room on the lower levels near the pool, if you don't min...

If you are looking for a laid back but still elegent atmosphere this is your place. The lodges are spaced out well & are surrounded by trees & vegetation. The restaurant, Papaya Lounge, attached has both amazing sunset views & food. Monkeys playing in the trees above the pool. Everything was great. Friendly staff.

I was very impressed with the low key and stylish atmosphere of Moana Lodge. Our room had great views of the ocean and sunsets. The swimming pool was a nice place to cool down during the mid-day heat of Mal Pais. My favorite part of Moana was the Papaya Lounge where we were able to enjoy spectacular sunsets while eating small plate tapas and some of the best mixed drinks we had anywhere in the Mal Pais / Santa Teresa area. The owners were warm and friendly and assured us of a pleasurable stay.

Room Tip: The suite at the top of the lodge has the best views of the ocean.

We spent 5 nights in a junior suite at the Moana Lodge last month and just loved the place. It is a real oasis after a dusty but interesting drive from the ferry. Beautiful Pacific views from our balconey and from the first rate restaurent (high quality breakfast included). Aidan, Vicky and Bruno were very gracious and helpful in organizing fishing and snorkeling outings (and beautifully preparing our catch for dinner), finding secluded sections of beach, other very good places to eat and recommending good day trips.
They have a very nice pool under a beautiful, very large tree as well. It was a real treat to sit in the lounge chairs, sipping drinks from the "honour" bar, while watching a troop of howler monkeys lounging in the tree above us !

Looking forward to visiting Moana again !

Room Tip: Get the junior or master suite- you'll love the views !

My husband and I just stayed here for our 1st trip away from our children. This luxury treehouse had everything we desired and then some. It was quiet, clean, tranquil and relaxing. It's a little out of the way, but didn't bother us at all. You can't beat the free breakfast and everything is a short walk or taxi ride away. There are no fruity drinks or limbo at the pool- thank god. There is, however, an honesty bar where you leave your room number in a notebook when you take a beer or soda. That sums up the vibe of Moana Lodge.

Vicky and Aiden, as well as all the staff, were accommodating and warm. They set up all of our daily excursions and didn't steer us wrong. There's something for everyone in Mal Pais.

In this dusty grubby little town you will find the oases that is Moana Lodge. Very clean and comfy lodgings away from the dusty road with a funky African motif. Good pool and spa area and the best restaurant ever! The breakfasts were unbelievable. Papaya the restaurant serves exquisite tapas. As a couple we shared four wwhich is more than enough and a pitcher of their homemade sangria. All this with a fantastic 180degree view of the coastline and crashing surf. Ok the 105 steps to the restaurant is aerobic exercise but the result is worthwhile.

Room Tip: The higher rooms have a better view but are more costly. Enjoy the view at the restaurant and enjoy...

We stayed at Moana Lodge in January this year, this was the second time we stayed there. We first visited for our honeymoon 3 years ago not long after it opened and loved it so much we came back. I did wonder if the hotel was going to be the same, hospitality and decor wise, we -were not disappointed :-)
Its a beautiful hotel with high standards on bedrooms, dining, pool etc. I book luxury/premium hotels as part of my job so have high expectations.
We have stayed in 3 types of the rooms that they have there and all are beautiful.
The Tapas and cocktails beat any we experienced in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa.
We are planning our return there next year!!
