La Hacienda is a small "hotel" with a Spanish Colonial style, which adds character and ambiance with the use of stone, tile and wood. The rooms are built around a refreshing clean pool area with chairs, umbrellas and hammocks under foliage that provides some shade if desired. A main shared "living space" or common area is central for the guests, providing a TV (who needs this on vacation?), comfortable seating, a kitchen with microwave and large table for guests use. There is also a quaint loft library area up above with a hammock for relaxing. A cooler with drinks is available on an honors system if you don't want to make a late night run to a tienda. The message from arrival was, "make your-self at home". Maryanne was helpful from booking and was welcoming and informative about the area at arrival. The first morning we were there she took us for a walk and showed us some amazing tide pools. A beach is within walking distance, but we recommend having a vehicle to be able to fully explore the vast area and variety of beaches available from Mal Pais, to Manzanillo, and over the mountain to Montezuma. La Hacienda is a great jumping off point for much exploration. Another plus for us is it was away from the hustle and bustle of the Playa Carmen/ Santa Teresa area, but close enough to enjoy some good restaurants if desired (you must try the Bakery for breakfast). Staff at La Hacienda would always welcome us back from our day and make sure there was not anything we needed. Kenny was especially helpful giving us info about local restaurants. One of the best, Caracolas is within a short walking distance. We stayed in the Master Suite, which was simple and spacious. Just a note, that it does have stairs for those who may be disabled. There was a large queen bed and a single bed, a large table, a chair and mini frig. It does have A/C and an oscillating fan. There was also a large wardrobe with shelves and space to hang clothes. There was a large tub with a hand held shower head. Though some of the fixtures showed some age, everything was very clean and in working order. A lovely housekeeper came in daily. They will change the sheets or towels as often as you would like, though the message is one of conservation. The entire peninsula is under a severe drought at this writing. I felt a little guilty having some laundry done, which was done in an efficient manner.
In response to the previous review, the Suite was front and center at the pool. The advantage was that our son could swim within close proximity and if desired you can open up your suite to the pool or the hammock area and allow the breezes to come in. Obviously, as at most hotels, the rooms that front the pool will have the most "traffic", so to speak. But, at night, we always found La Hacienda peaceful, especially after 9-10 pm at the latest, which is the policy of the Management. We belive this was more than fair considering it is a vacation. With the fan blowing, we never heard a sound, including from the road out front. La Hacienda has nestled its rooms to the back of the property away from the road (unless you rent a cabina). We were pleased with our stay at La Hacienda for the value. We have travelled across Costa Rica and this was our 7th trip to the country. Be advised that there are cultural differences/expectations between N. American accomodations and Central American accomodatons. Not good or bad, just different. Remember, you are not there to hang out in the inside of a room. Take time to get to know the locals, the way they live and experience the true meaning of "Pura Vida". It will change the way you look at things when you return home - for the better...
